Elite Dangerous Catch-All

Yeah. They announced today there will be a full wipe. It's pretty much anarchy across all systems as people blow the millions of credits they are about to lose anyway.

I guess it's time to load my Anaconda up with railguns then.

My anaconda don't want none unless you got rail guns!

You can do side missions or trade runs

Good grief... so if someone has rail guns just stay out of their way, I guess.

Well, those fighters are really weak and that guy is doing an alpha strike with 7 rail guns. If he missed a player he'd be in a fix as he'll have to cool down before firing again.

Newsletter is out! (haven't even looked at it yet)

[Edit] Ooo, pretty.

Whoooooooooooooooa

How many people will we have in at Standard Beta? I added a column to the GWJ Game Usernames doc, last one on the PC tab is E: D.

Added my char - but I am beyond awful at this game

That is pretty slick- did not know that was here. Nice to see who is playing out there now. Will keep an eye out for everyone.

Added. I'm slowly getting better as I try and try and try again at the single player scenarios.. Roll on Tuesday!

Well, I think I might have just accidentally bought this. I didn't spring for beta access (I usually just treat betas as demos anyway, and wait for a final release before digging in for real), but it's pretty hard not to get excited by what can be seen on Youtube and the like.

Anyway, hopefully you'll all forgive me for dragging the discussion back to input devices, but I've got a question that I didn't see covered as I skimmed back a few pages.

In the past I played a decent amount of X:TC with a 360 controller and managed to cobble together a configuration that was satisfactory for flight (although I would use the keyboard and mouse for more fiddly interface bits), but not ideal -- there just aren't the right inputs available to have yaw, pitch, roll, precise throttle control, and lateral thrust all mapped and accessible at once. Since I now seem to have accidentally bought both this and Star Citizen, though, I figured I should probably pick up a slightly more appropriate input device for this sort of game. (Star Citizen's controller mapping is definitely a bit more effective than what I put together in X:TC, and I hear the same is true for Elite, but still.)

I could definitely achieve (mostly) what I'm looking for with this $30 Logitech stick and either my keyboard or a G13/Nostromo type of device. However, those X52s do look awfully nice, and are definitely within impulse buy territory right now... so, for those of you using an X52 or an X52 Pro, do you find it comfortable/effective using the hat switch on the throttle controller for lateral thrust? Or do you have some other such solution that works well?

(Also, on the off chance that any of you have used both an X52 and an X52 Pro: My research seems to show that the difference is mostly in programability and minor improvements to build quality, so I'm interested if you have any strong feelings as to whether or not the Pro model is worth the extra cost.)

Thanks!

I'm hoping to get in as press, if so I'll add my name. Yay!

Well, I have the Warthog, not the X52, but currently have the lateral thrust on the throttle's index finger hat as per the default config and it works great. I've switched between Warthog, T-Flight Hotas X, and the 360 controller and like them in that order, vastly preferring the Warthog. You definitely make sacrifices with the more limited controllers but an X52 or above should be great.

Yeah, the Warthog definitely looks nice, but it's also definitely outside my reasonable price range.

Oh, I wasn't trying to upsell you, just wanted to explain that I couldn't directly comment on the X52, just that general control mapping. My kids have been getting into this and my older might be saving up for it. I'll be very tempted to replace their Hotas X with an X52 for his birthday if he does.

Well, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think I might possibly be upsold -- I have a history of making bad financial decisions with regard to this stuff, after all.

Sounds like we both might benefit form some hands on reports about X52 gear though. (Your kids have it pretty sweet, by the way. :P)

I cant tell what the difference between this silver X52Pro and this older x52 Pro is, if any.

From what I can tell, they were issued many years apart and look the same but the silver one is newer and has barely any reviews. I cant find one anywhere that is reviewing that exact model but I found someone who'll sell me the silver one for cheaps.

The silver one is actually the standard X52, and the black one is the X52 Pro -- that seller on the X52 is just way over priced. The Amazon direct link for the regular X52 is here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...

But yeah, from the research I've done it sounds like the Pro version ups the build quality and has expanded programability. Ultimately it's a $20 to $30 difference so I'd probably get the X52 Pro if I bought either, but if someone had hands on experience with both and said there wasn't much difference I'd perhaps consider the cheaper option.

Thanks, all those different/same products were pretty confusing. Next Friday I should have that and my Oculus DK2 and will probably just drool on myself all afternoon while I fly around getting killed by pirates. I'll be sure to post impressions

Awesome -- looking forward to hearing what you think!

You devil.

Although oddly it looks slightly less likely to have a comfortably positioned hat switch on the throttle for lateral thrust, despite otherwise looking rather impressive.

Nice!!

I'm using an X52 at the moment but I can see the upgrade happening....

This games keeps looking better and better. I stopped playing a few weeks ago since there are a ton of games to play. But I can't wait to play this with the Oculus Rift.

The X55 has been out for a while now, actually. I got mine from Amazon a few weeks ago. The supply isn't steady yet.

Alright, I'm gonna have to jump back in this weekend. Sounds like a lot of craziness going on, with some big fights going on around Aulin. There's a rumor that FD may give everyone a few million credits to have fun with pre-wipe. Unfortunately I'm about to watch a movie with the family so I'm out for tonight though.

How do you like it so far?

Also, have you been using one of the hat switches on the throttle for lateral thrust controls, and if so are they comfortably positioned for prolonged use to that effect?

I have the x52 pro. very happy with it. Feels heavy and is solid. I hear the x55 is great, but I found mine new for a good price on Ebay back when the alpha started, so I grabbed it.
Was on tonight and yes- like Liquid said- it is a little nuts, lot of people just burning credits. Most keep to the back of Stations, so if your not looking to fight just dock as quick as possible and don't go back there. I have a lot of credits myself, might burn some off sunday. I've not heard they are giving us creds to burn, but they may! They have done stuff like that before, just to try the big ships. Which I played with, both the Lakon and Anaconda, but I prefer an eagle so I am back to that.
