The thread for movies that aren't going to get their own thread but are still in theaters

I'm gonna go see Snowpiercer tomorrow in a theater and sneak in my own snacks like a red blooded 'merican should

There were moments where I wondered if Terry Gilliam wasn't hidden away in the credits somewhere.

Oh that was definitely on my mind for sure. Also, Tilda Swinton's character comes to mind and the whole bit about the protein bar production...

@nevin's spoiler - I very much believe so, yes.

Spoiler:

And hence my belief it is an allusion to leaving the garden of eden.

Dear movie marketers, producers, whoever.. please do more of this. This is the service I want to give you money for, not because the theater is too far but because it's generally a terrible experience. Give me a way to give you money for same day access from the comfort of my home.

May Snowpiercer be wildly successful so that others take note.

This has already been happening a lot actually. There's at least one good movie a month at this point released this way.

Yeah. I liked that article quite a lot. And I think she's right. It may explain part of why I loved that movie.

At this point it looks like Snowpiercer is a movie that could have had it's own thread.

Was already interested in this film based on the premise, but saying it is Gilliam meets Danny Boyle is just exciting me even further.

And I agree that I love it when films are available to rent the same time as being in theatres, even if it is a little extra. As a huge movie buff, I used to love going to the theatre. Maybe it's me getting crankier as I get older, but most of the time I feel like all the benefits of a huge screen and sound system end up being ruined, whether by the theatre itself (poorly kept screen or clearly lackluster projection) or the audience getting more irritating and rude than ever before. Now I only go if I think the theatre experience will really be a huge benefit, like Gravity on the IMAX screen, or to support an independent theatre in my city that plays indie and foreign films and has the most amazing popcorn ever.

Unfortunately in Canada, it's still a very rare occurrence for the same time release schedule to work out. (We don't have Amazon Video up here and nothing really comparable either. Even our version of ITunes tends to have crappier selection.)

I miss the one summer I had when I was out of college and had a part-time job that left me with about 4 hours to waste in the early afternoon. I saw a movie almost every day, and being a matinee performance on a Weekday at a multiplex, and always catching the movies that were just about on their way out, I rarely had to share the space with more than 5 other people. It was glorious.

I did not know it was on Amazon already. Regarding the rest of this... YES. If something pops up with that watch now while it's in theaters option I will almost always give it a shot if I want to see the movie in question. It's a superior experience for me in almost every way that really matters.

I find myself less and less driven to the theater anymore, and there's almost no chance at all of them getting me in a theater seat during the summer when kids are out of school.

I was seriously considering watching the film last night via Amazon Instant (was in the mood for a movie but nothing was really grabbing me; I wound up watching a couple episodes of Next Generation as "comfort food" instead).

I've done the "watch while it's still in theaters" option a few times, and I wish all movies had this option.

Also, I wish I'd caught up on this thread and realized that Snowpiercer was more of a bleak film and less of an action film, because I would've watched it! That's more what I was in the mood for, but the preview looked a little too summer-actiony for my mood last night.

So it sounds like I need to put Snowpiercer on my to-watch list.

I was even in a theater that was showing it, too, last Sunday. But instead I saw Samurai Hustle/Choukosoku! Sankin-kotai. Hilarious comedy about a feudal lord on Japan who is forced to make the long journey to the capital in a ridiculously short amount of time or have his clan crushed by his scheming rivals. It technically counts as "in theaters" because it was the once-only North American theatrical premiere, though you may have to be in Japan to see it otherwise. Worth checking out if it gets any distribution in your area.

I'm just going to add my voice of support for Snowpiercer. I loved it.

Forgive me if I'm late to the party and missed this, but have any of you Snowpiercer fans seen The Host? Great Korean monster movie from the same director.

Yeah. Memories of Murder and Mother are also great movies by him.

Watched it tonight on Amazon Instant and enjoyed it. People thought it was too bleak must not watch many Korean movies!

^ If I got on that train I'd have the hardest time not singing the song from the kindergarden car.

I'm definitely going to watch this, but I need to find a time that I've got a night alone with the TV. I don't want to watch it on my PC, and nobody else in the house is likely to be interested in watching a bleak sci-fi movie.

I've got a similar problem with The Purge: Anarchy, which I want to see, but my wife won't get within a mile of.

I watched the first Purge, and it was mostly a swing and a miss, which was disappointing since the themes it addresses are huge. It wasn't terrible, but just not the must see film it could have been. Maybe Bong Joon-ho could take a crack at the film.

I don't have my hopes up for the sequel.

I just watched the review over at The Escapist, and he says they pretty much ditched everything from the first except the premise, turned it into a grindhouse action movie, and amped up the social commentary. I can definitely get behind some grindhouse action stuff. I still want to see the first one, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

That's when I watch my Special movies.

I haven't watched one either. I like the idea, but knowing that it's primarily horror does nothing for me. I don't love gore for gore's sake. Or jump scares for their own sake. The idea behind it, though, is really interesting.

My problem with The Purge is that it's just about the dumbest premise for a movie I've ever encountered.

I thought this was:

While that's a terrible trailer and probably a horrible movie, the premise of it seems to make more sense.

It's basically a take on Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, as was Hunger Games. I think the premise is pretty great. It's supposed to be absurd, and would work if it didn't just devolve into horror tropes.

No, the dumbest premise for a movie is Indecent Proposal. If my girlfriend got to bang early 90s Robert Redford and then we get a million bucks, that would be about a second of hesitation before accepting.

Heh, I'm single, I can watch
the Pirate Fairy whenever I want, as it is on Netflix too.
It's also awesome. (No seriously, the Tinker Bell movies are great)

We were just talking about this the other night. My wife and I both agreed that she would've taken the money.

Lucy was... not very good. Skip it.

Luc Besson needs to consult with some scientists before he tries to write any more "science." The movie was just full of nonsensical pseudo-science, way beyond the "we only use 10% of our brains" myth.
