How did you discover GWJ?

Pages

I'm always struck by the longevity of all the people in this community. I've been loitering on these forums for about a year now, and I'm still the noob in every thread.

So tell my your story. How did a nice person like you end up in a place like this?

I was trolling the internet looking for communities running Magic Online leagues and came across a thread in the forums. If I remember correctly, I registered an account, signed up for the league, played about two games, and promptly disappeared again like the asshole that I am.

EDIT: It's been pointed out that we've done this drill before:

Everything old is new again. ;)

During the dismantling of the 1up Radio Show, it hit a point where the personalities present on the show just all grated on me. I can't remember who was on the show now, but it was after Jeff Green had left Ziff Davis, and the writing was on the wall about the impending demise of 1up. I looked for other podcasts about video games, and GWJ was one of the first hits.

Frankly, I think one of the prime strengths of the Conference Call is that it isn't primarily industry writing professionals; just well-spoken, well-informed fans.

Anyway, Conference Call led to the community, and the rest is history.

Once upon a time, there were these two dudes who wrote for Evil Avatar who decided they wanted to start their own site...

I randomly searched for gaming podcasts... then after loving the Conference call I came here. Changed my perspective of the internet fundamentally.

Honestly I can't even remember.

I'm trying, but I have no idea.

Yeah...it's been a long time.

I think I was looking for Fallout information and NMA posted a link here in one of their articles.

The only way to not be a noob in a thread is to post. A lot.

I was part of the 1up migration. Well, the CGW/GFW migration. I believe Shawn Elliot being on the CC brought me over. Slotted the CC in after that in and never looked back.

IIRC Penny Arcade linked to a Bioshock piece by rabbit. That brought me here, I discovered the Conference Call, then the forums and I never looked back.

I think I came here after Rich LaPorte's Gone Gold site disappeared. Timing might be a bit off, but pretty sure as I was pretty into that community as well.

Sometime back in the early aughts I joined the Bethesda forums in anticipation of Oblivion's release. It was the first time I had participated in any sort of forum, and it was absolutely toxic. I don't remember who it was, but another poster there was also a goodjer and pm'd me suggesting I should come here after apparently noticing how fed up I was getting with some of the dickbags there.

I'm having deja vue with this thread.

Yeah, I believe I came over after Gone Gold died. Not sure how long it took to find it, though.

Same here, but I lurked for a while before posting.

Ditto. I think it was at least three years before I actually made an account.

I seem to recall a legendary thread where someone got called out for using someone else's account. :p

In fact, I could link it, because it's in the commandments, but I'll spare the relevant parties the embarrassment.

I found the it via the CGW podcast around 2009 but didn't really start listening until I got into Minecraft and wanted to see if they ever talked about it on the podcast, after that I started lurking but didn't want to start posting in till I found a better name then IHateDRM. You can guess how that turned out in the end.

Shawn Elliott or Jeff Green (or both) guested on the podcast, so I checked it out. Don't think I joined the forums until a while later though, probably when the 1up forums died.

How old is this site? I can't even remember when I started lurking around. It was pretty early on, though. I graduated college in 2001, married and had my first child. PC gaming became an easy hobby in the evenings, but without a good group of friends it could be a bit lonely. And then one day I noticed a website about people more or less like me and the rest is history. Been an avid podcast listener since and only sometimes poster. Great site and community, though. I need to be more active.

Me too, though I'm sure it had to do with a certain Sean Sands and a polarising article...

Did the same thing for about a year. Listened to the CC but never even ventured into the forums for some reason.

I forget how I originally stumbled onto the site (the Source leak sounds about like the right timeframe), but I lurked for a while. I finally registered around the time I bought WoW. This was probably my first post in the forums.

Probably from stumbling across an article, though I can't remember anymore. I do remember that I started posting seriously in response to an article that really hit home.

Was around 2007, I think, and the TF2 beta had just dropped... I had landed my first REAL job post-college, which was/is a desk job, and there were no rules against listening to things while you work, so I bought an iPod an started grabbing podcasts. The GWJ Conference Call was one of them. They started talking about TF2 beta nights. I joined up mainly just to play TF2 with people. Turns out it's a great place to play all kinds of games. I've stuck around since.

CC, I think, but I know looking for a WoW guild is what got me to delurk.

I was googling around, doing research for my master thesis on Half-Life 2 and its narrative structure. An article by Lobo, although I can't remember which one, led me here. I lurked here for a while and dipped my toes in the Goodjery waters a few months later. That was almost 10 years ago. I still feel like a noob here, though that has more to do with my average grasp of the English language. Compared to the average Goodjer at least!

(I often feel that the most intimidating aspect holding back lurkers to start posting, is the incredible level at which the average Goodjer writes)

Holy smokes, that thread is from 2009. I can't even remember what I did wrong yesterday to make my wife refuse sex last night.

This make me feel bad about my level of writing... and prper use of punctuation... and spell checking...

You should shower when you get back from the gym before making a pass at her.

Spoiler:

Also, I linked to two threads. :D

The Great EA Lurker migration that followed Certis over. Still not sure about this Elysium fellow and I'm convinced my headstone will read Choose Your Tag!

My memory is not what it once was, but I think I was reading Bill Harris's Dubious Quality blog (http://dubiousquality.blogspot.co.uk/), and he linked to an article or discussion on here. So I checked it out, liked the cut of GWJ's jib and decided to join in, back in 2007.

Soccer threads are very easy to achieve tag status in

McChuck said I had to check out these amazing tiolet toss games he was getting in.

I followed two guys whose writing I liked from Evil Avatar & have lurked all this time.
