Disney Buys LucasFilm, Star Wars Episode 7 in 2015

That is awesome. F'ing awesome actually.

Everything's great except the twin suns of tatooine and the X-wing and Lockheed X-men craft... (XR71? I forget)

Looper's Rian Johnson Is The Director Of Star Wars: Episode VIII

He will also reportedly be the scriptwriter of Episode IX, but not the director. Man, not only is Disney is getting their Star Wars biz together quickly, they're hiring some real scifi talent with Johnson, Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank. It's getting immensely difficult not be excited about the future of Star Wars.

Yeah, they just went and made me excited about Star Wars for the first time in years. The only way I could be more excited is if they announced Republic Commando II.

FTFY.

Sorry Stele, but I'm spending that particular game-wish praying Nintendo finally delivers me a new on-rails Star Fox game.

Pretty sure I'd be more excited if they said JJ Abrams handed all three movies over to him, but alas.

Harrison Ford's Injury May Have Completely Screwed Up Episode VII

Uh-oh. Please take out your official Star Wars: Episode VII Salt Lick, but now that it's been officially revealed that Harrison Ford's leg is broken, the rumor is he'll be sidelined for six full months — which means the movie's either getting delayed or massively rewritten.

The potential news comes from the UK-based site Jedi News, who says sources told them of an emergency meeting ay Pinewood Studios this morning to discuss how to handle Ford's sudden unavailability. Since Ford's Han Solo is reportedly the film's lead, the only way to make its Christmas 2015 release date — which Disney has refused to move before — is to rewrite Ford's scenes, or rewrite the script entirely.

Assuming Ford is indeed the main character (which is itself a no-brainer), I honestly don't know how this rumor isn't true. Unless the script has Han Solo sitting down most of the time, something will need to change to accommodate Ford's injury, and that's either the script or the release date. The question is whether Disney would rather take the gamble on a Harrison Ford-light Episode VII movie in December '15, or whether Disney's shareholders and quarterly profit predictions and whatnot have the capacity to be patient.

If I had to guess, I think they'll wait; I think Disney will feel much more comfortable keeping Harrison Ford the movie's main star, no offense to Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. I also think the side-benefit of giving the film another six months of production time is better than trying force a full script rewrite at this point — as it stands, the movie is only 18 months away...

Since Ford's Han Solo is reportedly the film's lead,

Do we have confirmation on this?

I honestly don't know how this rumor isn't true

*eye roll*

Uhh, I know Harrison Ford is a big name, but why would we assume Han Solo is the lead character? Personally I was expecting, and hoping, that this would be a changing of the guard of sorts. I wouldn't want any of the original cast to be the lead character.

Disagree. R2 should remain the lead, as he's been for the past six movies.

Lobot or gtfo.

While I know the rumors have been running wild about Ford having a "major part" in the film I was hoping for more of a Star Trek Generations setup where the old cast shows up, nods and waves to the new cast, and the new cast takes it from there. More of a formal passing of the torch. I don't know if I'm up for another geriatric action hero movie.

Yeah this is the R2D2 saga. f*ck everyone else.

R2 has got to be obsolete by now. Maybe Episode VII is actually the story of a frantic race against time for the gang to find one of the only remaining motherboard batteries that works on R2's circuitboard before his current battery finally dies off.

I have a hard time imagining Ford playing any more of a "lead role" than Alec Guinness did in Episode IV. This isn't a series like Mission Impossible or Men in Black that's traditionally been anchored around a single actor or core group of characters. Star Wars as a brand sells itself at this point, and frankly the new trilogy would do just as well financially if they didn't bother to include the original cast at all. The prequel trilogy sold well enough without them. Rewrites might be necessary, but the success of this movie isn't in any way going to bank on Ford's involvement.

He's been in so many movies, they could just cut together footage from those to fill in the gaps.

Wow, I can't imagine being that old that it takes your bones 6 months to mend...

Can't they 'pop it in carbonite' and keep the cameras rolling?

I've got a bad feeling about this.

You'd think they could just CGI up a Harrison Ford with the kind of special effects budget they likely have.

This just proves that George Lucas was right for making a run at an actor-less future of cinema.
