iOS Games Thread Catch All

Been on a shmup kick lately and can't speak highly enough about Danmaku Unlimited 2. It's on Steam as well for those who don't like dragging their digits everywhere. Sorry if this has been mentioned already, didn't Even skim.

Just finished Monument Valley. It was incredible. Knowing the developers are making more makes me happy.

How are the controls? Does it want one of those new iOS7 physical controllers?

Nope, it controls perfectly fine as is. I did play on an iPad though, no idea if it works as well on a smaller surface.

100 Rogues Free right now.

I am not a huge fan of Rogue like games but this is apparently a great one!

I've put a lot of hours into 100 Rogues and bought half of the DLC. It's a very simple rogue-like that's a great first jump into rogue style games. If you're a rogue-like guru this is going to be bland for you.

Just noticed over on the TouchAracde forums that there is going to be a Monster Hunter for the iOS. Called Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (apparently also called Monster Hunter Freedom Unite) They have a couple videos. Looks like Monster Hunter. Maybe I will give it a try but I doubt it. Not because it doesn't seem like a fun game but because it seems like a never ending game and I can't even seem to finish the games that have defined endings!

I love Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, I've played probably around 200 hours of it, but there's no way I'm playing that on a touch screen. In this case, it's definitely better on Vita!

To star off I think I will post a review from appspy for Hitman GO....Seems like a great game....Anyone here tried it?

Here is the Toucharcade review.
They seemed to love it too.

I played a couple of hours of it this evening on an iPad Air and am momentarily stuck on 1-15, the same one shown at the start of the Giant Bomb QuickLook. I am digging the aesthetic big time, and enjoying it tremendously (even with all of the sound and music turned off since everyone else in the room was watching a movie). Progress is per-device, though, disappointing for a puzzle game.

I wish that was on Android. Or I had an ipad mini. It looks beautiful, the aesthetic. Probably not great on an iPod Touch, I imagine?

I believe it's iPad only, DS.

how does it run on older iPads? iPad 2 for instance?

Store page lists iPad 2 and newer, iPad Mini, iPhones 4 and above, and the 5th generation iPod Touch.

I must have gotten it confused with something else, thanks for the correction.

Infinity Blade II (universal) 99ct. This weekend only.

No problems for me! Very swish.

I apologize ahead of time if it has been touched on before, but I have a long trip coming up where I will not have internet connection. An internet search was not very fruitful, and thus I figured you all would have good input. Most games do not note whether they require an internet connection or not, though with most free games, it seems they all require a connection or the bulk of the game is online. All that to ask what are the best games that do not require an internet connection on the iPad? I would prefer rather than simple consumption time waster games (like infinite runner games) to have games that have some meat to them, if that makes any sense.

To give you a sense of what I have been playing, I did recently get FTL which I plan to play on the trip, though admitedly, it is very hard for me and thus i may get frustrated and want something easier. I have dabbled with clash of clans and boom beach but they require an internet connection. I have enjoyed hearthstone, but that definitely requires an internet connection. I have completed Kingdom rush and frontiers which don't require it but hard to find other good tower defense games as the genre is quite flooded. Oh and lastly, I did pick up Monument Valley which I plan to complete on the trip, but this will be a LONG trip! Thanks!

I'd suggest the iPad versions of Bastion or Sword & Sworcery, if you haven't enjoyed those yet. Both work fine offline and are great iOS experiences.

Without knowing more about your preferences:

Frozen Synapse - The campaign is rather good, and worth it to play to get a better idea of the game in MP.
X-Com - The base game is still pretty good.
Plague Inc. - Destroy the world with a plague you created
King of Dragon Pass - Lead your clan to becoming the leaders of Dragon Pass.
Brogue - Traditional Roguelike, one of the best (and free!)
Oceanhorn - Zelda style 3rd person Action/Adventure game
Junk Jack X - 2D Crafter designed for iOS
Transport Tycoon - Run a full on transportation business (Bonus Free Lite version)
Starbase Orion - Old School, 4X goodness. I can't find the light version in the app store.
Tactical Space Command - Harpoon style scenarios...IN SPACE!
Bastion - Sweet ARPG. Great game.
Aquaria - Metroidvania style game. Good, solid controls.

Most of these are premium games, with upfront pricing. Some have expansions as IAP. All of them have solid offline modes, or are offline games with the barest of Game Center integration (Achievements mostly).

EDIT: I might update some more - I'm hunting through my library right now for more.

Try Brogue or Wesnoth if you really want to sink some time!

Drummer, here's what I know.

Battle Academy, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Combat Mission Touch, Neuroshima Hex, and the John Tiller wargames should be fine offline. Sid Meier's Ace Patrol (WWI and WWII Pacific) play offline. I'm pretty sure Lords of Waterdeep does too.

Those should keep you busy for a looooong time.

Fieldrunners 1 and 2 are often mentioned as A+ tower defense games. I am not a huge fan of the genre so I can't say from experience but it seems to be a pretty strong consensus.

I love XCom on the iPad.

If you like boardgame-like war games, I'd also recommend Battle of the Bulge and Drive on Moscow.

If you're interested in something a bit more shallow (but still great), try Mirror's Edge.

Get Lords of Waterdeep! Lots of us are on there, pulling the strings of the City of Wonders.

By the way, thanks a whole lot everyone for locking me out of completing my last quest :). This final round is going to be close...

Flithy skimmer here...

About to jump on a long flight and was thinking of grabbing XCOM but I'm seeing reviews that it has major issues on the iPad 2.

Anyone have first hand experience with it? Have the crashes been fixed with updates?

Thanks for all the suggestions! I knew I would get a lot of great ideas. I will have a look at all of those as there are some listed that I have never heard of before! I have actually never checked out x-com as wasn't it $20 at one point? That seemed steep for an iPad game, but I just checked and it's now $10. That sounds more reasonable to me.

It was $20 and worth every penny at that. It is the same game you play on PC, but in a very convenient format! $10 is certainly preferable to $20, but I don't regret paying full price for that one given the time I've gotten out of it.

Upgrading to iOS7 made XCOM very crash-happy on the iPad 2. I thought they had updated it again to address those issues, but I can't say for sure. I didn't wait for an upgrade of XCOM, I simply upgraded my iPad! I bought an iPad Air in launch week; at that point they hadn't fixed the iPad 2 crashes. So, you'll have to poke around to figure out if they ever did.

The most frustrating thing about the crashes was that it takes quite awhile to boot up and load a save game on the iPad 2.

I just went to buy it and was surprised to see IAPs for a 'non-freemium' or '>99c' app.

Is the 'unlock classic chapter X' IAP there just for the impatient gamer, or do I need to buy another 5 pieces of DLC?

Each objective you accomplish at the end of a level goes towards a total that can be used to unlock the next level pack - in the shape of a new boxed board game....If you don't want to play your way through to unlock the packs, they can be bought through in-app purchases, but we haven't found the need. You can also buy hints that will help you complete levels, but again we haven't needed to.

Thanks, appreciate the info.

I've been playing a lot of Leo's Fortune, which is a great 2D platformer with some stunning, if repetitive, graphics, and a pretty damned decent control scheme. I used a PS3 controller for a bit, but actually went back to the touch controls.

I'm putting a lot of time into Marvel Puzzle Quest at the moment too. There's a hump in difficulty that is clearly designed to push the player to IAPs, but I managed to get through it with the Season 1 events.
