LEGO Nostalgia

So, I have the Haunted House, Ghostbusters set is coming out in June. Just need this to finish it all off!

Haunted House makes an awesome Halloween display piece.

Probably my favorite Lego find from the old childhood boxes was all my moon crater baseplates. They seriously need to bring those back.

I'm at page 111 of 260 with the Death Star. Assembled 2 of the 4 boxes that came in the large box. I've been timing the build, and so far I've been 7 hours and 15 minutes.

I knew it was going to be a large set but boy does it take a lot of space.

Pics!

Agreed, we need something in frame to convey the scale as well...

*insert size references, innuendos and movie quotes*

I'll toss in a minifigure for scale next time.

When I was in the lego store last week I looked at the Death Star and thought of you building it. The thing is massive.

Funny Strewth, you and I are at exactly the same place. I might crack open box 3 tonight.

And it is huge and surprisingly heavy.

Why build one Death Star when you can have two at twice the price?

Is that a force shield generator your Death Star is sitting on?

On 8/22/2013, my son went on a tour of Google in Manhattan and saw these:

I spent the past few days sorting the collection of bricks that my wife and I brought in, as I really wanted to get a good idea what precisely do we have at our disposal. Needless to say the first thing my five-year old son demanded was a robot (I am slowly easing my wife into buying a Mindstorms set). My inspiration was to turn an old postbox brick into that cute little trash compactor Wall-E. Voila:

It is not color-perfect, but I was amazed at how much articulation such a small model can provide: it swivels on the wheelbase, can move arms and hands, turn head and the double-hinged head does wonders with its expression. My three-year old daughter now just runs around with it and does a "happyface/sadface" shtick. And it can compact trash - the postbox can fit two 2x1 bricks, plus the claws can hold instruments. 32 pieces all in all, including ten studs for face and wheels. Man, I'm in deep.

Wife and daughter meanwhile had their own fun with the newly sorted bricks. Notice how everyone is on the phone

Lego provides some of the best family time ever.

Wall-E looks great! I love microscale Lego.

Well after 16 hours and 30 minutes, my Death Star is complete.

I love the amount of detail in this thing. The TIE interceptor is suspended on a crane hoist that swivels. There are two elevator lifts. The emperor's chamber has a bit of scaffolding that collapses. The trash compactor has a specific piece of piping among the debris that they use to try and stop the walls. Obi-Wan has his generator that he shuts down. The cell block has the overhead lights and an optical illusion to suggest the depth of the cell corridor.

There's even the little truck droid that Chewbacca intimidates.

Ahhh! That black flat to the right of the corridor needs to be pressed down.

Yet another example of why I love GWJ.

To be honest the set is so big and awkward it's hard to get good leverage at times to press it down tight. I have corrected my oversight.

What I don't have is enough models to fill out all the scenes possible. I think I have another Leia that came with a different ship. Actually I think I have 4 Leia minifigures now. Including bikini Leia from Jabba's sail barge.

I was thinking about some ways to get cool minifigures (that are not in the Series packs yet).

A few years ago, before the minifigures were released, they were selling minfigure magnets. Basically a magnet block with a minifigure on top.

I bought ALL the Star Wars ones at $4.99 each (they were discounted). People were taking the Boba Fett and selling him for $15 - $20.

Anyhow, this is not possible anymore since LEGO has Kragle'd them to the magnet blocks.

LEGO is Lord Business?

Nooooooooooooooooo!

Guys, don't forget May 3rd to the 5th - Buy $75 of SW Lego and you get a Darth Revan minifig!

In prep for SW DAy May 4th check out this Flickr set - Battle Of Endor 2.0

My plan is to stop in tomorrow and get my Sandcrawler.

Two things for this week. We stopped in at Mastermind Toys after dinner this week, and I discovered the Curiosity Rover there. I haven't seen it anywhere, and that includes two different Lego stores.

Secondly, you can see that it is sitting on a Lego table. My girlfriend rescued it from her school. I think she said they were just going to throw it out. It's pretty darn neat.

Cool! I have it on my wish list but never see it less then $70 bucks or so.

Since it is retired usually only private sellers are selling it. Cheapest price on Amazon right now is 69.99.

Edit: got my Sandcrawler, and redeemed all my VIP points. Store clerk said that was the most points she had ever seen. I kept collecting them and didn't redeem them, and I got the Death Star during the double point days as well.

I'm confused. Wasn't Curiosity just released this year?

Curiosity killed the cat and went to jail.

I bought the Republic Gunship today for the May 4th sale.

I guess but they surely did not make enough since it is already retires. The BttF still has inventory.
