Planetside 2 Catch-All

Has he tried to reinstall the drivers for the GPU?

Yep. Tried that and tried just rolling back versions too. Didn't work.

I have the same gfx card, 550 Ti, no problems. Welcome to pc gaming.

Roland, I'm curious what settings you set yourself at and what version of the software you're using? The boyfriend also asks what kind of anti virus you use. We're just trying to narrow things down.

How old are your graphics drivers? Nvidia cards had a glitch introduced in drivers past v314.22 that basically tanked them. Tons and tons of random unexplained crashes for people playing games and just idling at the desktop. This affected 500 and 600 series cards. It took them over 6 months to finally fix it, but I'm running v335.23 now and it works okay. The version with the fix was the one just previous to 335.23 but I skipped that one because it had a bug in War Thunder.

The very latest drivers tend to have program specific glitches. So if he recently updated drivers roll back one version and see if it works better. If that doesn't fix the problem try rolling back the drivers all the way to 314.22 and see if it works any better.

The game has become unstable as of a few patches ago (late March) and they haven't yet fixed it. I don't know what they changed, but it isn't working.

That said, DLLs that start with "nv" are mostly going to be nvidia driver-related, so that's probably a big part of the problem.

The game's never been more stable for me. I think I've had one crash in the last week. The only problem I get consistently is voice cutting out, which seems to be connected to alt tabbing. I may not be a good data-point though as I've seemingly been blessed with bugs not effecting me since the tech-test. I do get the screen going flat black one or twice per play session, which I know is a NVidia driver issue, but it hasn't bothered me enough to roll back.

I've also recently learned that you can keep windows from restarting if it crashes, this way you can write down the numbers and look it up.
Turns out I have a 560 Ti.

They are really taking their time with the PS4 version, which is disappointing ... sure I want it to be the best they can make it but still, ah, impatience. The game punished my aging PC, so that's not really an option.

Probably cause of the stupid H1Z1 game, which I would lambast in that thread if I forever wanted a zombie game to show up in my Recent Topics I posted in tab.

*Cough*
"Our plan as of right now is to get Hossin, continent locking, outfit recruitment & outfit base capture live with next week's update."

I hit a Reaver with a ML7 as it destroyed the tank I was gunning a few seconds prior.
It was glorious.

They will soon, maybe. Mattherson and Waterson will be merged soon.

They're having a Server Smash contest, whichever server's team wins gets to keep its name.

Go Waterson!

I haven't played the game in quite a while, the game runs much better than it did back in beta. But it's still barely acceptable for an FPS game. (for me) I used to be a pretty decent Scythe pilot but now I spend most of my time doing support stuff that doesn't require twitch reflexes.

I think having Hossin, continent locking and a server merge would revitalize the game. With Hossin added you have more than enough space to host two servers worth of players at once. And with continent locking you can compress the population into a smaller space to keep the action going.

I didn't know that most of us had been on Waterson. That's funny, because its also where me and my boyfriend are. (I'm NovaKay, and he's Randothecommando) We're always looking for good team mates! I mostly play a medic and he plays the light assault.

Haha, I deleted my Waterson account, but if the servers merge, I can start using my Mattherson account to play with folks. That is, if I decide to start playing again.

So first Mattherson won, but then they figured out they goofed and recounted and Waterson won, and now everything's made up and the points don't matter because the new name of the single US east coast server will be Emerald.

it was a glorious fight though

Heh oops, I'm okay with Emerald. That was a PS1 server name wasn't it? Towards the end they didn't have nearly enough people to merit a west and east server so I think that was the only one left.

IIRC they did one for the West Coast server too. Who won that one?

The server merge went well, the battles have been as good as they where the first few weeks. But more Important then that We Have Hossin!

Oh snap. I haven't played in a while but am definitely going to try this out.

Well, if Hossin is a thing, I am definitely hopping back on.

I played again the other day, twas fun! The performance feels better, which is nice, it was always a bit jittery on my computer. I love that the lattice is now a thing on all the continents, it really helps to direct the action, which means I'm seeing a lot more battles in places I've never been before, instead of the usual suspects.

Played Hossin last night with my friends, and it's fun. An interesting problem is you have to watch for people in the trees (and there are a lot of trees), rather than just in towers. For an "early access" continent, it feels pretty damn solid.

So I mostly came to this thread looking for advice on how to improve my gameplay. I'm not bad, but I'm not great either. I usually play medic, so I try to stay out of the way, but if it comes to shooting people, I die very, very quickly.
I finally found a gun that works well for most of the fights I get into (It's the Vanu smg with the huge clip. and my sidearm is the black revolver style weapon... slower, but hits hard), and my medic gun is on the second to last upgrade, so I'm more useful as a medic.
Really my problem is longevity. I'm having trouble surviving long enough to get through some or all of my clip, or get through my opponent's shields.
Anyway, tips, tricks, loadouts that would be helpful?

Oh... and I'd also love some flying tips. I mastered the Bank Turn and Barrel Roll turn, but still don't do too well in a dogfight.

Thank you all in advance!

It's been a while since I've played, so hopefully this advice isn't outdated.

Have you tried using the shotgun yet? I think all players start with one these days. For Vanu, it's the Thanatos, and you'll want to buy the extended clip upgrade (100 certs). I found that it increases my combat effectiveness by about 50%. The drawback is that you give up mid/long-range combat capability, but it *dominates* at close range.

The SMG is has better effective range than the shotgun but accuracy suffers at mid-range. Extremely effective at run-and-gun fights or when you get the drop on people. However, in a straight-up fight, you'll consistently lose to shotguns at close range and carbines at mid-range.

For the Engineer & Heavy, consider investing in a battle rifle. For Vanu, it's the Eidolon. Great for long-range combat, and at close range you can use it like a slug shotgun (hipfire on the move).

For medics, don't forget to activate your area heal as you go into a firefight (or try to run from one). Speaking of which, it's worth upgrading it a few levels, so that it lasts longer and recharges faster.

Thank you! I'll go look at the shotguns this afternoon. I hate getting into fights that close range, but since my sidearm pistol is good (and fairly accurate) at medium range, maybe a shotgun would be helpful.

Regarding your final point, though, they added a medic ability that's an unmovable area shield-recharger. Basically you plant it and anyone in the glowing sphere gets their shields recharged very quickly. It's useful because it doesn't have a time limit or cooldown like the area healing, it persists after my death, and since I'm usually healing with my med-gun, the ability to help shields is very useful. I'm in the process of upgrading that.

Keep in mind that you die quickly because everyone's TTK is roughly the same and it takes many bullets to get a kill.
Always get the drop on people. You know who's a good target in a firefight? People shooting your teammates. If they're shooting your teammates, they can't shoot you.

Just thought of something, you play with an smg, do you hipfire or ads? Learning when to do which is probably a good idea. I say this cause you don't like close in fights, so I assume your instinct is to always ads, mine is too generally, unless I have a serpent or pdw.

I do wish they'd have moving targets but VR is better than nothing, try getting up close to those guys in the grass and hitting things while moving.
Fun little exercise, start with a full magazine, kill a VR target, one shot at a time to the chest within max damage range, look how many bullets you have left.
Now reload and kill it while moving and firing as if it were real, look how many bullets you have left.

I don't do well in dogfights either, my solution is to ram BR100's.
Triage can now heal people outside the vehicle!

Then again I'm okay but not great either as well, so good luck!

I haven't played in a while but getting the drop on people is the number one way to rack up crazy kill counts. I nearly always played with the rocket pack, and because of that I learned a lot of strange out of the way locations that I could get to that players would often not see. From there I could rack up kills. People don't look up, so going a floor above even when surrounded can be safe. Otherwise don't worry about score and just have fun.

Fun? FUN? I must dominate! I must murder my opponents! I must...
Nah, just kidding. I am having fun, but I also want to improve. I've never been great at FPS to begin with, so I'm trying to go up the steep slope.

Regarding hip firing vs. iron sights (ads? What's that?) I'm trying to get away from iron sights and into hip firing, which is hard for me, because I want to be really accurate. I already bought a laser sight for my sidearm, and now I think I'm going to get one for my primary.

I played around with the shotgun in VR training last night... seems good (hard to say vs. stationary, non firing targets, but killing a heavy in 2 shots is pretty good), so right now I just have to decide if I want to continue with SMG or go to the Shotgun.

ADS- Aim Down Sight. Aiming via reticule or whatever sight you have on weapon instead of hip firing.

Ok, yeah. I'm trying to get away from that. I usually don't have enough time to ads, acquire target, and fire before they kill me.
Laser sights it is!
