I just looked over the Summon school changes, and was thinking I might try Draconian for the first time as a Summoner. They seem pretty fun. Anyone have experience as a Draconian spellcaster and have a strong starting background preference? I know someone who will say Earth Elementalist.

I think conjurers are the best choice for spellcasting draconians. They let you practice up conjurations until you get your color, leaving your options open until you get your color assigned.

Hmmm, that is good thinking. Conjures can spam Summon Imp, right?

I am normally on crawl.s-z.org.

Well, if you want Summon Imp, you should go with Wizard. They get that spell in their starting book.

Yes, I just was looking at the wiki and had confused Wizard with Conjurer. Would a Drac spellcaster go Sif or Veh?

If you're focusing on big attack spells (conjurations), I would go with Vehumet. If you prefer to have access to a wider variety of spells, go Sif.

Quick set up question...

The set up looks incredibly simple for the Web Tiles version, but in the init.txt file, the second comment is this:

# On Unix systems (such as Mac OS X, Linux and the BSDs), you must copy
# init.txt to ~/.crawlrc or ~/.crawl/init.txt as:
# cp init.txt ~/.crawlrc

If I'm using a Mac to play, I assume I need to save and copy the init file to that folder, as it mentions. But I don't seem to have any folder installed with that name. If not, do I need to create one? If so, where would I put this folder?

Sorry for the stupid questions!

Web Tiles version means it plays entirely within the confines of your browser. No setup or installation is needed on your local computer.

Step 1: Create an account on this site: http://crawl.s-z.org/#lobby
Step 2: Click the "(edit rc)" link next to "DCSS 0.14", and edit to suit (e.g. by adding the appropriate team captain)
Step 3: Click "DCSS 0.14" to play.

Yes, I did that and got it to play fine, but when I looked in the edit rc file for DCSS 0.14, it had that comment. I assumed it had something to do with tracking the init file, possibly for the tournament? Maybe I can safely ignore that if the game is running fine?

The public servers have everything set up for you. You definitely don't need to do anything special on your own computer.

Most excellent, thanks for the clarification! I'm ready to die. Repeatedly.

I think I am set up for the tourney. Starts a week from tomorrow, right?

I need to play a few games to re-acquaint myself and see what has changed in 0.14.

So, to clarify. You need to win to score points right? That seems like a distant vision.

Can't join CZSO, keep getting a socket error. Played a couple of online games on CLAN though. No mouse support so I need to force myself to use keyboard when playing the offline client.

Fun game though.

Good heavens, no. You get points just by playing. It's like the SATs, you get some points just for showing up. Of course, getting runes, visiting new branches, killing uniques, and winning will drastically improve your score.

My own (humbly pitiful) score sheet from the 0.13 tournament, just to show some examples of how to score without coming close to winning. Also you get badges. Oh yeahhhhh.

I decided to play a single game of 0.14 last night just to get back into the swing of things, and made it to level 8 / D:6, as the new Vine Stalker race. I made the mistake of quaff-IDing some potions, and the very first one I tried was, of course, a potion of mutation... and it turned me, a mobile carnivorous plant, into a herbivore. What the f*ck.

Oh ... oh gawd. There's a web version? Of course there is.

There's still space for players.

Just sayin'

Mix: Draconians are awesome casters if you have a little patience at the start. Erik gave great advice. I generally stay away from skilling up any elemental casting until I know my color. If you end up lucky enough to get red or white, you're laughing. Conjurer is a good start lately because you have some damage spells from the start that don't rely on any elemental skill, just straight conjurations.

I'm happy to be a captain. I'll update my RC file this evening sometime. I've played a few games of 0.13 locally and man do I stink. I had a nice start on a green draconian caster last night and got bolted by nergalle for 44!! damage and a quick death. Ow.

Are the names on the teams earlier on the actual names of the players on the Crawl servers? If not, give me a shout out in this thread or by PM with your actual Crawl server name and I'll add them.

Oh just sign up! You'll go on the next empty slot which is my team!

Looks like the least laggy server for me is CBRO in Atlanta, GA. I'll see if it works for the tournament.

I was literally just testing CBRO out and about to post the same thing here. CSZO was my previous favorite, but the lobby is currently really bugged out or something -- just having the tab open causes my entire Firefox to lock up for 10+ seconds at a time.

Edit: And indeed, CBRO is on the list of eligible tournament servers, as per here.

Ok, I finally got around to making a Google spreadsheet to keep track of usernames for the team captains. Please fill in the cell for with your username on the server you'll be playing on.

Spreadsheet

Also, can we get this in the top post as well?

I'm really screwing around with the GrFi - eating Sky Beast flesh, and quaff id'ing potions. I have yet to find an alter to Oka, so I'm going Zin to get to max piety and cleanse all of the mutations.

I'm also having issues killing Hydras *sigh* the joy of finding an artifact falchion. Paste

EDIT: and dead. Getting the silly runs out of my system is fun

Done.

Those are just placeholder team names, we can still change them to whatevs.

I updated the sheet, and my .rc file with

#TEAMCAPTAIN Homard

Nice of you to put me on the same team as last year, so I just had to c/p it from my .13.

Suggestions:
There is no place like Homard
Homard Bound
Mr Devil is in the Details
Formicide is Painless
Formicidal Tendencies
Vine and Dine
Out of Our Depths
No Dithrespect

No, that gem is new to this tournament, though I did mention it earlier in the thread.

I laughed out loud to "Formicide is Painless".

I'd like to propose "Bed Bath and Beogh" for my constituents.
or
Bro Do You Even Crawl

I love both!

Also, "Quaff All the Things"

I'm also trying to think of a clever way to get stair dancing for square dancing and something with Luguno Beach.

I'm pretty sure you suggested that for the last tournament too, Michael... Hoping it'll stick this time?

My suggestions:
Martha's/Michael's Vine-yard Grew Teeth
Stalkin' In The Rain
CrawlBro's (too much time playing Dark Souls 2, then seeing the new WebTiles site "CBRO" led to this)

Edit:
More Mutations Than The X-Men

As much as I'd love to be in the team name, and it's a clever one, 'Formicide is Painless' is a genuine lol.

My vote is for Bed, Bath and Beogh for our team, although formicide is painless and formicidal tendencies are awesome names too. You guys come up with the best names!

Nothing More Than Felids would be pretty funny, if that's all the team played.

We should archive good names in the spreadsheet to use next season.
