GWJ bugs, feature requests, and updates

On all my mobile devices just tapping the top bar of the browser takes you to the top.

Cool! Except it doesn't work in Chrome. Boo.

Awesome! One more item for the long list of reasons that Chrome is not the right browser.

I've heard this before, but I don't seem to have that option on Chrome on my Nexus 10. A bottom-of-the-page Account/Inbox/Favorites would still be much preferable for me.

Hold down the middle-mouse button and drag up.

Weird. It actually annoys me on Chrome on my iPad because it's easy to inadvertently do it. I had tested it on Chrome on my S3 before posting that just to confirm and it worked fine there too.

As of the new update of Avast, an anti-virus, Avast just remove the Amazon widget, saying it's a phishing link, or a tool for companies to track me.

Must I put an exception my anti-virus, or there is something wrong the way to widget is working now?

Maybe it'd be a good idea to put thread starting privileges behind a post count of at least a few posts. Random spam threads seem pretty regular. Makes at least, if not more sense than not letting people use BBCode IMO.

seems fair.
I would limit it to maybe 3 posts.

and I would redirect the 1st time poster to a text explaining why they're not allowed to post just yet.
context generates empathy.

It seems like a good idea, but once they're on to the game (some of them are persistent enough), you have a distributed number of posts all over the place, and then once they pass the minimum post requirement, new threads in addition to that.

Maybe a minimum number of posts, supplemented by a 48-hour restriction on thread creation, where the clock starts with your first post above the post limit?

I'm under the impression these are bots and not real people; the 48 hour delay sounds like a really good idea.

maybe the 48 hour clock starts ticking after the first post in an existing thread?

I like my clock because it forces a number of posts first before starting the clock, allowing them to be discovered and identified well in advance of them being permitted to create threads. It holds them in a state where they can't create threads until 48 hours AFTER they hit the post limit. For legitimate new users, this impact is minimal. For spammers, it's practically a death knell from the beginning.

Not if you have that bound to something else. Or, I could even turn my mouse wheel to free spinning.

Still both more work as a user than having one more line at the bottom. I'd actually rather have the option to back out tot he parent forum than going to top, but both would be nice.

I'd be happy simple with another link to favorites at the bottom. I rarely use My Account, etc, so spinning the page all the way back to the top for those odd occasions are fine, but Favorites I hit after i read pretty much every thread. I guess I don't get why there is such opposition to adding a single link at the bottom of the page. If you don't need it or want it, you don't have to use it

Whenever a spammer posts with a link in the thread title, I get a forum that looks like this on my iPhone.

I'd like to second this. Not having access to search on the mobile version has bummed me out on several occasions.

Are there enough gwj twitch casters to make worth adding a little box with links to live streams? I like the one on ihearthu.com.

1. Favoriting/tracking old threads

I noticed that at least one old thread cannot be "made favorite" like the current threads. The thread I'm speaking of is 2008's "How to make a Podcast".

I completely see why this sort of thread isn't prioritised, since most outdated threads are no longer actively relevant to the community. However, I'd love to see when/if this topic has further posts (searching for similar threads is difficult since so many threads contain word "Podcast"), and also it's handy to be able to retreive it even if I don't have access to my browser bookmarks.

Obviously, it's not a big deal, I can bookmark it in my browser, but it's a function that would be nice to have for at least some older posts.

2. Searching for posts that concern the Podcast generally, but not individually

I wanted to see if there were any posts that concerned the GWJ Podcast as a topic, rather than specific shows. The search function didn't make this easy, and I was wondering if there is some solution to this - even just creating a thread "About the GWJ Podcast". Clearly, this isn't urgent or really vital, but I wondered if it had been considered in some way. Not sure how many posts would come up.

I love the community and the podcast. Thank you to all who have improved the interface to its current form. it's very approachable and I have no complaints.

Because that's not a forum thread. None of the front page articles have the favorite function. It'd be great if they did, of course.

It is a bit annoying, but I've been able to find threads that I was looking for just buy typing in "gwj (subject)" in my phone's browser. Google seems pretty good at knowing gwj=gamerswithjobs and it's not necessary to type out all that extra stuff.

Wait, I thought GWJ was Gamers with Jesus.

It's possible to favorite them, but you have to do so by manually editing the URL.

http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/3...

Becomes

http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/favori...

Something about Firefox 27.0.1 and flash 12.0.0.70 (and a few earlier versions) seems to crash the site quite regularly for me the last week or two. The browser will just hang as not responding, usually there look to be two copies of the flash app open in task manager. No issue with others sites or other browsers so I'm thinking it must be the way I have FF configured that isn't jiving with something specific to GWJ?

Thank you Hyetal, and Quintin Stone! You have made my day! I now have an explanation and a solution.

ALSO I wanted to say to krev82 that I have the same configuration, and even saw the same thing in the task manager (two flash identical apps open). However, I don't get any crashing or issues with the GWJ pages. I didn't think these pages use any flash anyway - except embedded YouTube. I use adblock but even disabling it for GWJ pages doesn't cause the pages to slow or crash. My system is Win 7 (64bit). Good luck figuring out the problem! Anyone else have ideas on the issue?

Heh, I came to this thread specifically to look for information on the lack of a search link on mobile... and presto! .

I found earlier today that navigating to www.gamerswithjobs.com/search on my mobile browser (Chrome on Android on a Galaxy S4) brought up a functional and seemingly mobile-formatted search page. I was consequently surprised that there was no link for this on the mobile site.

The lack of a search blank is based on browser window size. You can make it disappear on a PC if the window is small enough. I don't think there's a mobile version of the site.

Wow. That interface is so much better.

Whaaat? Why didn't I know about this?
