Ascension: Card game for iPhone/iPad/paper

That's right- I guess I'm demonbox on there since they no longer use GameCenter. I just tried to send you a friend invite (sparhawk, right?)- if it doesn't work, please send one my way.

Spar- waited until I had time to post here. I'm going to decline your invite and resend with a longer cycle of play- I can't commit to definitely completing within 30 minutes, though I will try to play a couple of times a day if possible at least.

And you too, and biggie red is in too, that's great.

Played this a bit when it first came out and thought it was fun but got distracted by other things. But I'm interested again and would like to know if there are any recommended guides or strategies out there. Much of what I find in Google refers to the physical card game, do these strategies apply in the iOS game as well?

The games are identical, but there are many expansions which can be played in various combinations. The iOS version also isn't caught up with the physical game releases. I'd recommend sticking with the base game for a while, or jumping right into SoS as the changes make it a different experience.

Any indication when the Android version of this will be available? I've had the chance to play some deckbuilders recently, and I really enjoy the general genre, so would love to give this a shot.

Android version will probably happen when Ascension Online comes out. I believe the beta is expected to start this month but I'm not sure if that's for PC or Android (or both).

Unless something has changed, the Playdek app won't catch up with physical game releases (and is now a full year behind the physical game).

Sorry my gameplay has slowed (and sar for sparhawk for not sending a game invite or accepting yours). One, but only one factor, was that I upgraded my iphone this weekend. The process was a bit more of a hassle than I would have preferred. It looks like it might be even more of a hassle once I reset my password and tried to play some matches though. My base purchase carried over- but it seems none of the expansions did. The game says I have to purchase these again in order to play any of my open matches that involve DLC.

Any one know if there is a solution to this short of purchasing these again? I take it the transactions are being handled differently now that Playdeck is supporting these, but I would think that the DLC should carry to the same account on a new device (especially since the new phone is the same platform- iOS- as it was purchased).

I would contact Playdek and let them know.

demonbox, have you tried the "Restore Purchases" button in the in-app store? It's intended for exactly this situation. As long as you're logged into the phone with the same Apple ID as you bought the DLC with, it should enable them for you without the need to re-purchase. As far as in-app purchases go, you're dealing with the App Store and not Playdek.

GL demonbox, invite me any time you are ready to play

Does anyone else have it that gameplay from the AI's side slows down to a crawl
during the game?

Yup, happens occasionally -- seems like more often since the update that brought us Immortal Heroes. Both iPad 3rd gen, and iPhone 4S.

Holy sheeeeeeeeit, I banished all my rune cards (apprentices) without realizing it!

So this is what happens when you banish all your rune cards:

Keep at it, you can do worse! I've finished in the low 30s for score (unintentionally). Don't think I've ever reached the 20s though, a new goal for me. Not sure that can be done without doing it intentionally, but if it can I'll manage it at some point.

Backers from the kickstarter for the new ascension game got their beta invites recently. I played a little today.

The biggest change I noticed is that all the card art gas been redone, I assume there has been some re-release of the physical version recently and I haven't played the iOS game for a while so I don't know if the new art is there yet.

Outside the card art the interface generally feels quite a lot busier than the playdeck iOS one. I think I prefer the old plainer look but that might just be a matter of familiarity as I have put in close to 1000 games there.

Unfortunalty there is no online multiplayer, only the original cards plus the first expansion and no android version available yet but I think in general it does show promise. Hopefully stoneblade update this one a bit more rapidly than they have with solforge

I got my beta code earlier this week but haven't redeemed it yet. I was hoping multiplayer would be available out of the gate but hopefully that comes soon. I'm also hoping that Steam gets some sort of notification system for asynchronous games. As much as I enjoy playing card games on the iPad I prefer the larger viewing area on my monitor except there's no way for me to know I have games waiting on my move.

There was an announcement earlier this year (oddly via the Kickstarter instead of their website) that they were updating the card frames and issuing a new product called "Apprentice Edition" which I think is a budget re-release of CotG (ie. the first set) for 2 players. From what I'm seeing in the forums it looks like the new card frames are being used with the latest promo cards (November and December) and we'll definitely see them with the new sets next year.

Am curious about it
When will it be released?

I don't think they've said anything about when it's going to be available to the general public. The plan is for an F2P release where you get the "base set" (I'm guessing either Chronicle of the Godslayer or the Apprentice Edition) for free and you have to buy the additional expansions and promos with money or in-game currency. I'm hoping they'll provide some sort of discount coupon with copies of the physical expansions going forward similar to what Rio Grande and Days of Wonder do with their games.

As for the client... the PC version feels like it's designed with touch screens in mind. It's functional but just feels a little awkward with the mouse (to scroll through your deck or discard you click and drag in the opposite direction, and the mouse wheel activation only zooms in on the card which is counter-intuitive). Overall layout is similar to the Playdek app, but in general everything feels bigger. I really like they're using a "fisheye" widget for your hand which zooms in the card you're hovering over, I really wish they would do this with SolForge. Not a bad starting point and it holds a lot of promise. Unfortunately the game doesn't really have any sort of support for higher resolutions (much like SolForge) and just stretches everything out when you maximize it.

In general the new card frames are nice and the art changes are a welcome touch. The only downside is that they seem to have dropped the unique font for each faction's flavor text which I thought was cool but I guess this will make Mechana's flavor much easier to read. I also noticed that Samael has been retconned into a proper trophy monster too.

Help me out here, cyrax. You beat me on average of 3-5 times for every one of my victories. What am I doing wrong?

We just started a new game, and you seem to be doing fine. Could be that I've been playing for two years. I know the ins-and-outs of all the expansions and the appropriate strategies. If you feel you need help, I could mentor you during the match. We could get a gmail conversation going where I could analyze your moves.

Beyond my inherent knowledge, the key to winning is knowing what is/could be in your--and your opponent's--hand.
