WoW:Engineering Question

OK I have a human mage that I took up mining and engineering with.

I found a Journeyman Engineer trainer and trained to skill of 1.

I got a mining pick and went out and got some stone and ore.

Now I can not seem to figure out what to do next.

Is there some tool I need? I went to an anvil and got a blacksmith hammer but still can not figure out what to do to make stuff.

Do I need to find an apprentice trainer to buy recipies or what?

The skill you''re looking for is called smelting. Hit ''P'' to open up your abilities and it should be there. You need to be standing next to a forge to do it. It lets you turn raw ore into bars of metal. Once you have copper bars, you should be able to combine them with rough blasting powder (refined from rough stone with your engineering skill) to form crafted light shot. You can also make dynamite with 2 rough blasting powder and 1 linen.

You will find recipes from both trainers and mob drops. Drag the smelting icon on to your hot bar and stand next to the forge like Reggae said and smelt away :). Once you have the components for a particular recipe select your engineering icon from your skill window - drag it to the hotbar (for convenience) and engineer away.

Can you use Engineering Items without having the engineering skill?

Very few things can be used by non-engineers, most require a certain level of engineering skill.

Yup. Pretty much, your options are the EZ Thro Dynamite and, of course, the guns and bullets. There are a couple strewn through there (the Ornate Spyglass, the Ice Deflector, the Discombobulator Ray).

Is the +15 to engineering a gnome gets significant in the end?

I am a human and wondering if I am going to be able to get the full potential out of engineering.

I am thinking it won''t make much difference in the end Maladen unless they add engineering recipes that are 300-315, which they won''t do because there would be an uproar.

OK great got it all working now. Nothing like a mage with dynamite I always say.

I''ve found the best way to start off an engineer is to get 30 or 40 rough stones and just make blasting powder till you can''t level off of it anymore. Then switch to dynamite.
Then make a mad dash to get to 100 to make goggles.
Least thats the way I''ve done it.(I don''t know why but 5 of my characters are engineers...strange)

And send your dynamite to Duclama.

FWIW I think that Mining is trickier to get started with- but then progresses much faster- than Herbalism.

I like both, but there''s always a chance to ""get lucky"" with Mining, that there seldom is with Herbalism.

Well I got engineering to 75 fairly easy with more dynamite and bombs on me than I could possible use. So sold some back to vendor to get me some coin since broke currently.

Have the recipie to make course dynamite now so will do that if I can find some course stones.

Can not wait till I can make a mechanical squirel and some gogles. Just hope I can afford all the recipies needed to make these things.

I have some course stone and some rough stone in my bank if you need, what is character name, will send it to you in mail tonight.

Thanks for offer but I am on Bloodhoof.

Please just check thottbot to see what schematics are vendor sold and what are drops. I''m disgusted with the amount of blueprints I see in the AH with 3, 4, or 5 gold buyouts that cost 15 to 40 silver at a vendor. This probably holds true for any tradeskill recipes.

Also, a caveat about engineering: You may get some overlap with the items you make and the skills/spells your character has. As a priest, jumper cables, parachute cloak, and recombobulator are handled better by resurrect, levitate, and dispel magic respectively. There may be other examples.

Additional engineering caveat: It''s a big money sink.

Still, I have a great time with it and wouldn''t hesitate to endorse it to anyone who knows and accepts the drawbacks.

Not as much of a money sink as Enchanting.

Seriously, though. All the tradeskills are moneysinks. I know from firsthand experience that Blacksmithing and Engineering definitely are, and one of my best RL friends is an enchanter, and can''t stop complaining how much he hates the cost.

Yeah I am using dynamite as a mage when I am low on mana for example. Plus for some reason the idea of a mage hurinlg sticks of dynamite amuses me.

The same thing for my druid...a mining, dynamite throwing druid...with a mechanical squirrel. I kill myself :).

I''m going that way with my druid and probably with a paladin as well (so he has some ranged attack) if I start one up. Herbalism is kind of ""meh"" when gathering it, but its nice to have the potions for my rogue. Skinning/leather working is great though. Roadkill leads to free skins and free money. My hunter supplies my other characters with cash and armor.
