Interesting Kickstarter Catch-All

My wife aggressively encouraged me to back this project: Draco Magi
Now I have to decide if I should double my pledge to get one of the neoprene playmats for it.

Edit: I've just realized that I have no idea how that actually works since it isn't listed as part of the reward tiers. Hmmm...

This one's been on my radar for a while. The catch here is that the psychology of being in a dungeon plays a significant role in the game. Pretty cool.

But I'm sick of Rogue-likes... just let me save... seriously I don't have time to keep dying and repeating.

Oooh - nice looking game. Bookmarked while I decide if I'm going to make my wallet hate me more than it already does.

Just increase your $$$ by whatever the playmat costs, and they'll work it out for you - there will probably be a form you fill out once the campaign wraps up.

Important Kickstarter Security Notice

On Wednesday night, law enforcement officials contacted Kickstarter and alerted us that hackers had sought and gained unauthorized access to some of our customers' data. Upon learning this, we immediately closed the security breach and began strengthening security measures throughout the Kickstarter system.

No credit card data of any kind was accessed by hackers. There is no evidence of unauthorized activity of any kind on your account.

While no credit card data was accessed, some information about our customers was. Accessed information included usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and encrypted passwords. Actual passwords were not revealed, however it is possible for a malicious person with enough computing power to guess and crack an encrypted password, particularly a weak or obvious one.

As a precaution, we have reset your Facebook login credentials to secure your account. No further action is necessary on your part.

We’re incredibly sorry that this happened. We set a very high bar for how we serve our community, and this incident is frustrating and upsetting. We have since improved our security procedures and systems in numerous ways, and we will continue to do so in the weeks and months to come. We are working closely with law enforcement, and we are doing everything in our power to prevent this from happening again.

Kickstarter is a vibrant community like no other, and we can’t thank you enough for being a part of it. Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. You can reach us at [email protected].

Thank you,

Yancey Strickler
Kickstarter CEO

My account must be fine since I didn't get one of those. Right? Right? Right?

Given the possibilities, I'd opt for changing my password. Note: I got an email too, so it's not just taanstaafl being phished.

I went through and updated my password as well. My wife got an email, I did not.

I got the email, and changed the password -- which, I'm embarrassed to admit, was very weak. Normally I do long random passwords, but for some reason I was being lazy the day I made my Kickstarter account.

At least that's fixed.

Also kind of glad I lied my head off to Kickstarter about where I live.

edit: although, I've answered surveys truthfully, so they probably have the correct address anyway.

Guess I should finish changing the rest of my passwords to the stronger ones I've started using. Good enough reason to as any now.

Thanks for the heads up, guys, I didn't get an email. I changed it to a 128 bit hex key generated by KeePass. Should be good, now.

Yeah, a 16-character random password should be proof against brute force for a long, long time.

And note that if a website uses a 'hard' algorithm, like bcrypt, even a shorter password can be pretty darn resistant to brute force. But using a really long, truly random one protects you against dumb website tricks, as well as bad guys.

Same here. I thought I had done the right thing on this account and load up KeePass to double-check... and nope!

*sigh*

I got the email but, I too was lazy that first day I was checking out the site on a lark and it's tied to my Facebook account logout *cringe* at least the password for that is long and complicated, so I got that going for me.

The email mentioned that all accounts tied to Facebook login is mostly unaffected and need only log back in using Facebook again. So now I'm wondering if using Facebook login was a good thing.

Probably because Kickstarter doesn't store your Facebook log-in. To get your Facebook password they'd have to hack Facebook.

Figured as much. I'm still wondering if that's a good thing long term. If say someone does "hack Facebook" then all would be compromised. And it might be hard to keep track of which sites I did use it for.

Personally, I think trusting Facebook with any personal data whatsoever is an exceptionally bad idea.

Oh look at that, I got the email!

Malor wrote:

Agreed. In general I don't like inter-site security - such as sites that request Steam login details to display certain data - nope, no thanks. I also don't have a Facebook account, but even if I did, I doubt I would ever link any account to any other, not when there are so many Password/Login managers out there that take away the complication, negating the 'ease of access' benefit that these types of cross-site logins are designed to give.

I also got the Kickstarter email, and have changed accordingly. I begin to wonder just how much of the bitcoin-designed systems are aiding/increasing the dangers for even complex password cracking, given that the bitcoin systems, even on a hardware level are actually designed to do something similar. That's a discussion for another thread, though.

Yeah, just got the e-mail today myself. Password changed.

Moving beyond the hack, here are a couple of recent finds.

Galactic Princess

As the captain of your own smuggler spaceship, lead your crew to a life of glory! How you do that is up to you!

The ways to achieve this aim are multiple. From trading merchandises, even illegal ones such as space drugs or slaves if you choose so, to using diplomatic solutions. But never forget though, that the best option remains piracy, but with piracy often the price of blood.

So guard your treasures and beware your enviousopponents, especially of the corrupted members of the Spacecop alliance.

Looks FTLish.

Then there's
Delta Green: Tales from Failed Anatomies

It's a Delta Green story collection. What makes it interesting is one of the reward tiers...

AS ABOVE, plus we’ll include you in the restricted Alpha Team of playtesters for the upcoming Delta Green roleplaying game. Playtesting begins this spring

Galactic Princess has a nice Sword and Sworcery meets Star Wars vibe.

Project: Dark by Will Hindmarch

Play fantastic thieves in a fantastical city in this new stealth-adventure tabletop roleplaying game.

[...]

I designed Dark from the ground up to cultivate the tension and suspense of stealth gameplay. For the players, the game hinges on regular playing cards, rather than dice. This allows players to better plan, make both dramatic and tactical choices, and benefit from patience and precision in tangible ways. The better hidden your character, the more cards you have in hand.

Characters themselves are described by the cards players place in their deck and the skills they train. Each player needs their own deck of regular playing cards to play.

I haven't played a tabletop RPG in ten years, but I may be in for the books on principle. Stealth!

StarCrawlers

SF based "dungeon crawler" RPG, except in this case the "dungeons" are derelict starships and the like.

Might have to get behind that.
