Banished by Shining Rock Software

Caesar IV and CivCity: Rome had decent combat systems.

I think some limited small scale combat could be good. Just having to protect yourself from random raiders and/or wild animals. Could almost be done as a tower defense style thing.

I loved Outpost!

But there was no combat in that game. Any competition for mining and whatnot was just decided as first come first serve. While you had your differences, refreshingly, each side mutually decided that the last couple thousand humans alive on an inhospitable planet shouldn't be killing each other over those differences.

Outpost 2 did have combat, the story was decades later (in a universe where the two outposts didn't merge together again, which could happen in the first game) when the increased time had both made each side better established, so that they didn't feel like the species was on the edge of extinction anymore, and had grown the divide between the two sides dramatically.

I should try to get that game working again, I did it once...

The thing I like most is that there's no combat. I want to build a sand castle and for once not have to worry about someone kicking it over.

Well, other than the plague obviously.

Glad to see a release date for this, and so soon! I have a free week coming up so I hope to dedicate most of my time to building houses, tending flock, and general town management. And I've had plenty of experience dealing with snow as of late.

Of those of you who have early access, how are you enjoying it?

What do you love/hate? What features are missing (non combat hehe)?

How does the game treat the death of your citizens? Does it make you feel horrible, etc?

Well, the only person on my Steam list that has it, recently went from 6 hours played to over 16 hours - in a matter of just over a day, so it certainly can't be completely rubbish

I doubt we will hear much until the official reviews come out.

While you may not have heard of Elder Geek I'm a fan of their video reviews. Always well done.

I'll sum up their review and spoiler it for those who are completely on blackout:

Spoiler:

This game is a no brainer and gets their highest recommendation.

Thanks for the heads up. It seems like a well-done review, and it's good to hear that the game is solid.

I had not heard of Elder Geek, but a few days ago I noticed someone streaming Banished on Twitch, and the account name was eldergeek. I watched the stream for about an hour in bed before going to sleep. I assume the person streaming the game is who did the review for their site.

I don't get jazzed about new games as much as I once did, but this one has my full attention. It looks amazing.

Fully agree! I get interested in upcoming games, but rarely experience a full-blown, can't-wait-to-play-this level of anticipation. Banished is one of those rare exceptions.

Good thing nobody could hear me just then, mr_n00b.

On the scale from righteous indignation to spit take...

I'll probably be picking this up on the developer's site, DRM free version and a Steam code to boot sounds just peachy.

Yep, that'll probably be my point of entry also, unless of course there's something nifty in the humblebundle offering, as per Starbound - though I'm not sure if the Starbound dev site was offering the same as humble, if indeed selling directly at all.

This game seems surprisingly small either 150 or 250 megs, depending on if you believe Steam or the developers website.

Growing up on games like Settlers 2 and Pharaoh, city/resource management games has a big place in my heart.
Never heard about this game before, but it surely looks interesting.
I think I might need more "campaigny" game modes to keep my interest though. I need visible goals to keep my attention, as sad as that is

Watched the review posted above. Welp, looks like I have my March Gaming Addiction(tm) slot taken, and it's penciled in for April as well.

35 hours!

Is that any better?

Hyperventilation receding. Deep breaths.

I'm going to make it.

Well, code is actually a really surprisingly small amount of most games: the vast, vast majority is sounds and textures. He probably doesn't have that many assets to support, because the game is relatively simple, visually.

Dwarf Fortress, one of the most complex games you can find, comes in a 9.8 meg ZIP file.

edit: and Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup, probably the single most advanced roguelike that's out, an incredibly intricate and complex game, comes in a 3.1 meg distribution file.

/me spots garion posting on the Shining Rock forums..

Represent!

And boughtened.

DRM Free version to play at lunch time while I'm at work, and a Steam key for my system at home. Noice.

I can't actually believe I lasted until release without watching any reviews/lets play videos. I am quite impressed with myself, making do with only the dev videos linked in the update emails. Now I get to see all the shiny for myself for the first time!. 10 minutes 'til lunchtime!

Bought, um, -erized. Or something.

They even let me use Amazon Payments, which I much prefer to Paypal.

I have no sound in game

I've tried both the 32 and 64-bit versions of the installer, and no go. Just silence. it doesn't even register in the Windows volume mixer list of applications. Sad times.

Bug report fun times!!!

I'm worried he didn't have a large enough beta team to properly test the game, but based on the amount of time and dedication this game has taken I don't expect him to take the money and run or anything. Any serious issues may take longer than expected, or less since he knows every line of code.
