House of Cards discussion

I can still count on my fingers how many times a show has surprised me. This show added a finger to my count.

Ack. Just 1 finger not 2

My oh my.

I can't believe Snape killed Dumbledore.

Oh, that was f***in great.

All of the above. Seriously. As an old(er) fart, I had given up on TV. Between Breaking Bad and now this, my faith is restored. Holy shizz, what a way to start your second season.

Is there any precedent for...

Spoiler:

The VP not living in the Naval Observatory?

Spoiler:

I found myself feeling really angry, though. Like I want there to be a pit bull like Jimmy McNulty from The Wire who won't let it go. I want there to be a parallel track of someone investigating.

Spoiler:

I had a pretty good idea it was coming. Still, that was unsettling. FU indeed.

It's possible that the show is broken for me.

Spoiler:

This was what ran through my head after that scene.

1a. Did that actually just happen?

1b. That wasn't a dream or his thoughts?

2. I wish the gang from The Wire would get a wire tap up and take him down.

3. He can't really get away with that, can he? He's famous? People would recognize him? There's surveillance footage.

4. Did this show just become "Scandal"? I think I've seen Olivia Pope involved in more realistic plotlines involving high-ranking officials.

5. Why do I care what happens on Capitol Hill when this show is now Sons of Anarchy?

6. Did that actually happen?

7. I think this show is broken for me.

Once they got back to politicking I couldn't be bothered to care, honestly. Anything but that could have happened. Photos leaked, parents sent threatening letters? Anything but that. Great shock value, but I'm not sure I'll watch the rest of the season.

Spoiler:

That is a good question. I was wondering who is paying for the security upgrade of his home.

So, in retrospect, the episode actually builds to the moment everybody's talking about and sets it up very specifically with one seemingly unconnected scene.

Spoiler:

So, Frank sitting down having his ribs, and he gets into the discussion with Freddy about the horrifying process of slow bleeding pigs. Frank actually looks a little bit disturbed by what Freddy is saying.

Looking at it the way a person like Frank might I can't help but make connections between that conversation and how he approached his previous enemies and people he used and threw away. With Russo in particular he set him up slowly, waited, and finally finished him off after he'd mostly self destructed. It's generally how he's handled everyone.

He's in the process of getting things going again with Zoe presumably to slowly ruin her in the same way, then he has that conversation with Freddy and instead of doing it slowly and painfully with her fighting the whole way... he decides to do it the "humane" way.

It's super gross but sure does seem to fit Frank's character and thought process to me.

Thinj I suppose that's one way to think about it.

I just figured

Spoiler:

he knew there wasn't anything he could do to completely discredit her and anything she said would potentially get in his way. The only sure way to shut her up was to kill her, and it sends the message to the others that he's untouchable and if they try, they could face the same fate.

Thin,

Spoiler:

That is exactly how I viewed the situation. Otherwise, why did we need the scene with Freddy at all in the episode? I, too, was shocked, and a bit pissed at first. That said, after watching a couple more episodes, and coming to the reluctant realization that the show wasn't about Zoe, I am back in.

I do have a bit of an issue with some plot holes (or at least the request to REALLY suspend disbelief) but the show is so enjoyable.

Finally, lost in the shock of the events of S2E1, how about Claire's absolute badassery in taking down Jilian? Bravo.

DSG, you make some very valid points... so (Episode 2 and 3 spoilers below):

Spoiler:

I agree regarding the parallel investigation. If you have only watched episode one, then watch on...

Also, even though there are surveillance tapes, he took care to conceal his identity what with the outfit he was wearing. Also, he had her delete any trace of him from her phone, and setup the last meet using a burner. If anything, I don't know that I believe that Zoe would have been so careless to put herself into the position that she did, especially after having been so careful up to that point.

Spoiler:

I disagree about Zoe. Leading up to that point she showed multiple signs of going back to him. She alienated herself from her group. She was acting Female Doggoy to her boyfriend trying to push him away. Zoe has always showed a blind spot for FU. Remember back in season one when she let Frank take naked pictures of her. Frank pretty much had her wrapped around his little finger.

Yes but....

Spoiler:

Zoe was interested in the power. She was promised a direct line to the vp. She saw an opportunity to become even more important in the news... She had ambition and that blinded her to the potential danger

Good points, both of you.

A lot of FU killing me in my dreams last night. Not even nightmares, I just took it with stride.

1 more episode to go! I feel extremely ashamed that I want to buy every Apple product ever. Don't worry, I won't give in.

Gah I hate netflix. 3/4 through the season. I know it's going to end but it's so good....maybe having the entire season available at once isn't good because it pisses me off when it's over.

Spoiler:

I'm not sure what Remy's game is. Why does he want to burn Frank?

I saw the lesbian scene coming a mile away. Felt kind of forced so I don't think they needed it.

I'm not sure why Claire wants to destroy the president and his wife marriage. I'm not sure what she and Frank gains from this play.

Just watched s2e1. Buh!

Spoiler:

The thought went through my head just as I realised where they were meeting, in a jokey "Hah, I wonder if he'll shove her in front of a train?" way. Then he FU'd me.

Well, that was fun and all, but now I have to wait a year for the next bit.

The good news about finishing season 2 is that I never finished the last season of Damages. So, I'm watching it now. It's essentially the same show.

Wow. Just finished the last ep.

So amazingly good. Mooooooooore!

I tapped out after the 3rd episode. I couldn't get past that first episode. Time to read a book, watch the Wire again, anything else.

Finished. Most haunting.

up to S02E11

Spoiler:

Would the country really care if the president did marriage counseling? It seems like a really minor thing compared to the other stuff going on.

Oh that three way. I was sure something was going to happen between Frank's wife and the agent but I didn't think Frank would jump in.
