Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle
From Dusk Till Dawn
Ooh. Can I get a ruling on The World's End? It has a bit of setup at the beginning of the film that takes place about a week in advance, but all of the action is during one night.

I vote nah. I love that movie, but the flashback parts take up such a large portion of the movie that it doesn't seem like a fair contender.
Groundhog Day
This. All else is just foolishness.

Already disqualified, try again!
If I'm not mistaken one of my all time favorites takes place in the course of a single day. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

Yessir it does.
Okay, I'll clarify the time span to prevent unnecessary debate:
Flashbacks and flash forwards are allowed as long as the action of the film takes place within a 24-hour period. So Reservoir Dogs would qualify since the action takes place just over several hours despite flashbacks to preparations for the heist and gathering the team. However, as Demosthenes points out, Groundhog Day actually covered 3 days -- Feb 1-3. Or you could be really mean and say that it covers 8 years, 8 months, and 16 days.
I'm also going to say within a 24-hour period so that excellent films that take place at night (such as Before Sunrise) don't get confusing.

Not necessarily.
10,000 years? What?

WHAT?
[Removes Groundhog Day from shelf, smashes it into a million pieces.]
Wait... I think I took this news wrong. Anyway, I officially strike it from my honorable mentions. MAGNOLIA remains my pick.
I like the 12 Angry Men suggestion. Going with that one. It's a classic and a good film.
The Goonies?
Wasn't Memento technically a single day with the occasional flash back or am I totally forgetting that movie?

I see what you did there!

You know, I thought about Memento, too...But I think it was actually over the course of a few days. It's hard to tell since he has the damn short term memory issue.
I thought the beginning of the movie ("Okay I'm running...Why am I running?") is around the midpoint of the actual story. Damn it all if I can't remember if he ever sleeps or not though. I want to say that he does at some point.

He definitely sleeps. I'd say it takes place over two days, maybe three.

BOOOOOOOO on the cheat sheet! That makes it no fun for debate
And by using the cheat sheet I came to this:
The Warriors ... come out and pla-ay.
The Notebook takes place in one day.
My vote is still for Groundhog Day though, 99.9999999999999% of that movie takes place in one day. Can't we do some rounding?!

But I couldn't help but look at it! I missed so many good ones.
To be fair, I think that list is wrong in a few places. Groundhog's Day, as noted, totally doesn't in either the 24 hour time frame or the full day/night cycle tests... Superbad, if I remember correctly, involves two separate days...
If we're not taking Groundhog Day into account, I guess I'll have to go with Airplane!

Still have never seen it. Always meant to, never gotten around to it.

Surely you can't be serious!

Ooooo good one. David Patrick Kelly totally improvised the three bottles clinking and that line, "Oh, Warriors ... come out and pla-ay."

Don't call me "Shirley". I KNOW of it, I know some of the moments, I've just never actually watched it all the way through. It's still on Netflix isn't it?
