Euro Truck Simulator 2 catch-all

Sorry groan, didn't mean to step on your toes there, was just excited about finding so cheap and effective solution with no silly thing that goes on your head.

I was just chain pulling. It's pretty cool tech for sure. HEad tracking without the need for a head...just a face!

Here's a dumb question. Does anyone know of a game similar to ETS2 but from an airline perspective?

The only thing I can think of are add-ons for existing flight sims, like this one.

http://www.justflight.com/product/ca...

I've got FSX but none of these sort of things ever really appealed to me at the time, plus I'm not sure how the complexity of landing etc transfers into the game. As for standalone games of this type, I have vague memories of 1 or 2 from years ago, but nothing springs to mind at the moment.

If we were allowed to fly in an airline management simulation game like we're allowed to drive in ETS2, the simulated casualties would be apocalyptic.

So, the realism sliders need some work.

I'm in a British registered truck. In France. And a French driver signalled me to turn left while he waited.

Yeah, right

Just a few questions from this novice driver.

Is there any way of working out what difference putting an upgraded part onto your existing truck will make ?

I'm also having some trouble with my new Volvo FH truck. I'm playing with simple auto transmission on, and for some reason I can't get the flippin' thing to go more than 35mph or get out of d10. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong (as it's bound to be my fault) ?

I finally made some time to play ETS2 with the Oculus Rift. It's pretty clear that this is going to be an amazing experience, and quite likely the best way to play the finest long-distance driving simulator of the modern era, or any other "cockpit sim" for that matter.

More than anything else I've tried in the Rift, ETS highlights the extremes that characterize the current Rift developer kit. The head-tracking is brilliant, allowing proper "head checks" when making turns, letting you literally look down at the dash, and (in my case at least), cackle maniacally at the astonishing prettiness of Polish wind farms gliding past the driver's side window. Incidentally, the stereoscopy and world scale work well enough that those turbines now look as big as they do beautiful.

Sadly, this wonderful game experience is not fully playable on the developer kit. The resolution is so low that the dashboard instruments are unreadable, as is the menu system (though removing the Rift between runs is a fine work around for the menu problem). The "screen-door effect" is also particularly distracting in ETS2, probably just because the game goes by at a relaxed pace, and because it uses "Oh! How pretty!" as a core gameplay mechanic.

If Oculus squeeze enough pixels into the production Rift hardware, playing ETS2 without one is going to be like playing flight-sims with a keyboard.

I was just about to put my own impressions on using the rift with this game up here, and then I saw this basically say everything that I wanted to say. When the resolution goes up and the "VR sickness" issues are addressed, playing this with the rift will be amazing. Right now I can only do one run before my head feels like it's about to explode and my stomach wants a lie down.

It's an awesome experience, but the low resolution really makes it tough to recommend.

Silly question but are you playing with a controller / wheel? I still have a few functions mapped to the keyboard only (e-brake and other stuff like that). I assume you won't be able to see the keyboard with the Rift on your head.

Is there any real performance difference between the different truck manufacturers? Does a Volvo have better handling than a Scania (basic parts, no upgrades), for example? Or it just which interior looks the nicest?

There's definitely a difference in 'starter' engine power. At least when I began Volvo was the way to go for the best bang for your buck starter truck.

It's a totally valid question. Well, when I started, I was using the wheel, but only playing in basic mode. Didn't even know I could turn indication lights on and off. That made me laugh for a good 5 minutes.

With the oculus, you can change how close the lenses are to your face, so if you adjust them further away, you can look down through the vents in the glasses and see some of the keys.

I guess having a wheel with lots of buttons would probably help.

I'd also add that upgrading your chassis improves handling significantly. Going from 4x2 to 6x2 provides better towing stability which makes a big difference with lane changes and turning in general..

There are definitely real differences and the handling varies based on model, even when equipped with equivalent chassis and HP. They also have different heights, clearances, and centers of gravity which contribute to the "feel."

I think Aaron D.'s comment about chassis is especially important with respect to handling; there's much greater stability with the 6x2 or 6x4 models versus the 4x2.

Things that impact the driving simulation:

- Chassis, as noted above
- Transmission, the "R" transmissions include a {ableist slur}er. Note that this is not super important in the sim since you have infinite air brakes by default, but if you enable the air brake sim and manual {ableist slur}er in settings this can be a major gameplay change.
- Engine, since raw horsepower matters (though minor differences aren't really noticeable, when you start getting 100+HP jumps you can really feel it).

Totally supporting the chassis point. I won't even bother buying a truck for myself with 4 wheels. My worst crash involved a high speed lane change, a curve and not enough wheels.

The only compelling reason to keep a 4x2 chassis is for the bling, since there's lots of stuff that you can only put on a 4x2, like fancy sideskirts and exhaust pipes. (Unless they've added more for the bigger chassis -- I haven't played in a little while.) Unfortunately, that's pretty compelling...

I actually swapped my Volvo for a Scania Highline last night. It does drive quite a bit differently. Engine power band is in a different range and the transmission has 14 gears as oppsoed to the 12 I had on my Volvo. Fun to mix it up! Gave the Volvo to an employee so I may grab it back one of these days.

I was having loads of problems with my Volvo Globetrotter XL - I couldn't get it to go more than 35mph or get above D10, and the cruise control didn't seem to be operational. Ended up swapping it to one of my employees.

I'm sure he really appreciated it!

Here, take this POS truck and give me your awesome one. Just make sure you are delivering milk in the neighborhood and not going across the country.

Pfft. I think they already do that. I've got one driver that I've never seen return home with a load. That is when he bothers to leave the garage in the first place. I think he's sitting there watching TV or something.

Luckily the AI drivers don't give a crap! That's be a fun mod "realistic drivers", the complain, skim money off the top and demand raises, vacation and benefits.

Hey the XL was a lot flashier than the crappy one I've just used to take electronics from Mannheim to Stettin !

Early look at the interior of one of the US trucks

I'm glad to see they have the cup holders modeled.

I love that the European truck interiors are all sleek and sophisticated and the US trucks get fake wood paneling
