The Big Gun Control Thread

realityhack wrote:

LMAO thanks tanglebones where on earth did you find that?

It looks like it's from Fake Science.

I cover myself in mud and light fires to avoid the predators.

Demosthenes wrote:

I'm throwing this out there:

Can we please stop using the word animal to describe, as jdzappa put it, "two legged predators"?

Seriously, I get it, I'm an animal, you're an animal, anyone reading this other than Skynet is an animal.

The word has other meanings due to this nation's history that are less than savory, and when we keep using it to describe PEOPLE, that's getting super troubling about the tone of this thread.

EDIT - Reread my original comments and decided to self-censor. I'm on jury duty this week and while I wasn't selected as a final juror got to sit in the selection process for a particularly horrible rape/attempted murder case. Saw the defendant looking all smug and defiant in the courtroom and this influenced my former tirade.

So I stand by my predator comment, but for the record I was speaking about the worst violent criminals of all colors. The KKK a-holes that used to terrorize Robear's family would definitely qualify.

That's exactly my point. Realityhack was suggesting that onerous punishments on gun sellers was a potential solution, and I was making the point that it isn't, because they're not doing anything wrong (in the eyes of the law).

Onerous is a term seldom used in an appropriate context.
Given the fact that you would be changing the law... they would be doing something wrong in the eyes of the law. They would be top stores for sales of arms that end up in the hands of criminals.

Now let me be clear. I do not think this is a good law. I am just throwing it out for discussion. Creating a good law would put the exact same people out of business but likely with dozens of multi-year prison terms.
It would also require a massive comprehensive change to our entire approach to gun legislation.

As far as the hypothetical goes. Dozens if not hundreds of gun stores are managing to stay many many times lower in terms of guns ending up with law enforcement tracing them.
So if all the stores do the same thing... how does one become the hub for WAY more illegal sales?
If a school had 20 times as many hospital calls for accidents as any other in the state we would likely see that as enough evidence to shut them down. They can't control everything the kids do, but by comparison we would see them as negligent regardless of any specific action.
In both cases at the very least it should be probable cause to rip apart their records.

Since discussing your right to self defense in life or death situations is worthy of ridicule, Im going to go make stupid jokes in other serious threads like the rape thread.

Spoiler:

Actually I won't because I have a little more respect but whatever.

Wow. Tough crowd. There's a fine line between ridicule and humor. This wasn't ridicule.

Given page 121 I think a little humor might have been appropriate. I don't think anyone was saying people should not be able to protect themselves.

As a note, I try to use humor in almost every conversation we ever have on this site. It's actually my opinion that humor makes conversation, even difficult ones, easier. My apologies if that offends, but it is simply a facet of who I am.

Wow. Do we know how to shut down a thread or what?

I can't remember exactly when - my gut tells me around pages 60-65 - but this is not, by any stretch, the most heated this thread had been.

You know what, if you guys were legitimately trying to lighten the mood (and it seems like that was your intent), then no offense taken. I'm sorry for being cranky lately - bad coffee, waiting for hours in a cold jury tank, and seeing the absolute worst in humanity tends to do that.

Yeah, that'd make anybody cranky.

Huh. Doesn't the whole "veangeance of society" aspect kinda balance it out?

Bad coffee... Dear god say no more man. I've killed people for less.

2 executive action suggestions just came out...

1. The first proposed regulation, submitted by the Department of Justice, requests clarification about individuals who are barred from possessing a gun under federal law because of mental health complications. Some state representatives said the terminology currently used is “ambiguous,” according to a statement from the White House.

2. the Department of Health and Human Services filed a request to address barriers that prevent states from submitting limited information on people with mental health issues to the federal background checks system. The proposal asks that certain limited information be submitted into the system to keep guns out of the hands of people who could possibly cause danger.

Queue the wailing and moaning about 2nd amendment infringement and collecting a national database

Lawmakers plot new strategy for defying gun laws

Missouri's latest proposal, introduced this past week, would attempt to nullify certain federal gun control regulations from being enforced in the state and subject law enforcement officers to criminal and civil penalties for carrying out such policies.

...did that just say that police officers would be tried for upholding the law?

This is the kind of crap that turns me into a frothing at the mouth rage monster.

I'm hopeful that one of these days the incredible stupidity of people won't bother me.

Can we just nuke the middle of America from orbit? It's the only way to be sure.

They don't need law, they have guns.

"Conform, or be murdered by hellfire from above!" he shrieked at the ignorant rubes that did not share his opinions on curtailing gun violence.

Except... the people the police are trying to stop for the protection of others will... have more guns... in this example? This makes my brain hurt at this point.

The police can't protect you, only your guns can protect you. You know, "when seconds matter, the police get there in minutes".

It doesn't matter if the bad guys have guns, a long as you have enough. If your house it's robbed by three people, each with a gun, but you have four guns, then you win.

There are modifiers of course, like if you have a neat gun with a scope and a laser sight that is worth 1.5 guns, etc etc.

Honestly Claymore mines would far more effective than guns would be.

Don't forget when you write off entire sections of the country, that there are plenty of people living in those states who are fighting against this sort of hogwash. They may not be the majority, and if they are the majority they may still not have political control—but checking these places off as a lost cause is disrespectful of the serious efforts these people are making to improve the place they live.

If you really think these sorts of policies are reprehensible, throw your support behind the people standing against them. Don't just point and laugh.

Hopefully no other states will sign on and it will be repealed before 2017.

Thanks to the NRA you can be virtually guaranteed that cloned versions of that law will show up in a lot of state legislatures soon.

ok people.... If I'm quoting aliens or predator movies it's a joke.... This particular thread seems to be seriously lacking in the sense of humor department.
