Speed Runs Catch-All

Pages

So recently I've really been getting into watching speed runs of games. A part of that is the "Awesome Games Done Quick" charity marathon put on by Speeddemosarchive.com and speedrunslive.com. It's a 7-day marathon to raise money for cancer, and AGDQ 2013 (in January) raised $448,423.27.

What I love about AGDQ is that the runners and other people tend to explain the glitches and tricks and their genesis.

So to get this started, here is a couple of runs I found absolutely amazing:

Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Any% in 22:38

Super Mario 64 120-Stars in 1:47:48

Super Metroid Any% in 49:35

Here is a link to ALL of the videos from AGDQ 2013:

Some terms:
TAS: Tool-assisted speedrun - using a program or tool to help the runner. All the AGDQ runs are NOT TAS.
Any%: Means any % completion. Usually just the fastest way to see the credits.

Here's my personal favourite speed run:

It lasts for a few hours, but I loved the Wind Waker speedrun. Fascinating that just a short while before the event, new glitches were being discovered that shaved hour/s off the previous record.

I'm watching this D2:LoD run right now: http://speeddemosarchive.com/demo.pl...

Track 2 on the file (I believe you have to download it to access that) has audio commentary from the runner and his friend. It's surprisingly entertaining.

best speed run I never thought I would enjoy:

Goof Troop Co-op. Seriously a delight.

Morrowind in under 5 minutes still blows my mind. It also illustrates why it was good that they removed flight/levitate from TES games.

I don't even know what the hell was going on in that run. Still though, beating a game that I spent a few hundred hours on and never actually finished in around five minutes is damn impressive.

So I kinda love Guacamelee, and have been doing some Normal Any % runs.

First Run:
Was trying to get sub-3hrs, so easily managed that. Was surprised how little powerups I actually need. Forget where to go a couple of times (briefly).

Second Run:
1st clean run without any major route issues.

Nicely done, sir!

Man, so awesome.

I donated $50, which seems to enter me in on all the prizes.

Just watched a Donkey Kong Country 3 run that was so cool.

Oh my god. The Super Metroid 4-way race is absolutely incredible...

One of the most incredible pieces of game playing I have even seen!

I wish I had stayed up for that. Wow.

Wow, that was intense.

I watched the Super Metroid race live while chatting on IRC with friends also watching. That was as good as watching a major sporting event for me. I would love to see esports embrace speed runs and races, way more interesting to me than MOBA matches.

Those guys are just unearthly good at that game. It's pretty amazing to watch, and compare my own fumble-fingered ineptitude.

And it's not like I'm bad at Super Metroid or anything.

And here's the video of the Super Metroid race

I actually enjoyed that enough that I've started speedrunning Super Metroid myself. Although I completely suck and can't even finish the game without dying... but it's fun to try nonetheless. I'm just happy to have a good excuse to play my favorite game over and over again.

Summer Games Done Quick started on Sunday.

Later today is Guacamelee which should be good.

I've been kind of disappointed with it so far. So many of the games that I've wanted to watch have been at, like, 2 in the morning. On top of that, whenever I've had time to watch, a lot of the runners/couch people have been really boring.

I saw a couple of entertaining runs yesterday, both of which are included in this video. One was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (starting at about 3:48:00) and the other was Sonic Unleashed (starting at about 5:43:00).

The Super Meat Boy run going on now is amazing, as Super Meat Boy runs usually are.

I'll definitely give the Sonic 2 run a watch.

They are ahead of schedule, Metroid Prime (1 or 2, not sure which yet) is starting soon.

Best runs I've seen so far: Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, for a lot of funny RNG and great commentary, and the Halo 1 Legendary run which is so great because I know that game like the back of my hand and the commentary was genius. It was seriously so good I'm thinking I may even have to start speedrunning it!

PJ is always great.
I can't wait to go through the vods. So sad I'm going to be out of town for LttP.

The Prime 2 run was amazing. Highly recommended.

Nice, I can finally "finish" that bad game without playing the rest of it!

I plan on watching the highlights later.

Awesome. I've missed a lot of runs that I wanted to see. I wish they actually archived the runs on twitch. They have plenty of down time where they could cut the stream for a minute so someone can make highlights.

Yeah, that was a very entertaining run.

For anyone that hasn't seen it, there's a marathon this weekend to raise money to get some Japanese runners to AGDQ. They hit the goal pretty early yesterday but it goes through tomorrow. Stream here.

Just a heads up for anybody that might be interested, AGDQ starts tomorrow. Schedule here.
