LEGO Nostalgia

LEGO just got back to me regarding the Bulk program:

The LEGO LUGBULK Program is offered to registered LEGO USER GROUPs if these LUGs can fulfill the requirements which is sustainability, minimum member count and participation in several events and/or AFOL driven activities during a full year.

If you would like to become more active within the community and to be able to participate in the LUGBULK program I strongly suggest that you join a LEGO USER GROUP in your region.

Merry Christmas.

So... you're saying there's a chance? Need to find a LEGO USER GROUP.

I'm still not hot on how Lego Friends uses non-standard minifigs, but I'm become more charitable to the line overall. Sure I wish they had less pink and was just subsumed into a more gender-neutral City line (which has its own problems, namely nearly ubiquitous conflict)—but it's still Lego, which means you can turn this:

...into this:

Courtesy of my niece's Lego (she was making a restaurant). My daughter got her very first Lego set (well, Duplo, since she's that age) this Christmas—a pirate ship.

zomg glad I found this thread, because this is what's on my desk right now!

It's so much fun.

Well, enjoy finishing the model! I took a few pictures of mine which are here.

My 6-year-old just finished building his favourite Christmas present:

1258 pieces of joy, and he did it almost entirely on his own. In 4 days. I'm impressed.

My brother and I got almost exclusively space sets. My most vivid memories were of:

The galaxy commander

And the crown jewel of the set was the monorail

My parents saved all our pieces in two copy paper boxes. They're all mixed together but are all there. When my nephew comes over all he wants to do is build stuff with me.

In Englishtown NJ (at the big Flea market), I bought an unopened Shuttle Launch Pad for $10.00.

I had that! That was one of my favorite sets! I loved the Shuttle.

I had tons of LEGO sets but I was too young to remember what I had, I'd recognize them if I went through the lines, I think. They got pretty mixed up once my younger siblings got old enough and I'm sure lots went missing in the multiple moves my family went through, but I still ended up with one tote full of them. I can't wait until my son gets older and I can start buying them for, um, him.

Back when it was originally released I saved up all my chores money for the original X-wing. Also one of my favorites. I recently bought it again and due to issues with my bank, ended up with $60 of overdraft fees for what I paid ~$30 for.

... it was worth it...

Speaking of Lego sets, the new Cuusoo Mars Rover model is available to order today. (story)

Binged on the Sopwith last night, wrapped that up around 4am. Slept 'til noon, had lunch, and started working on Jabba's Pleasure Barge.

I have no clue where I'm going to put all these...

Same. The Galaxy Explorer was by far my favorite:

My brother got me this for Christmas:

http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Space-Building-Peter-Reid/dp/1593275218

It's very cool. Modern designs inspired by Classic Space themes wrapped up in a history of the Lego space program tying together all of their Space themes into one timeline. My 8 year old and I can't put it down. Also has plans for some of the robots and ships.

Yeah I got that book for Christmas too.

Good news, one of his models got approved for manufacture so you'll be seeing that soon.

Lego sets are by 2 get one free at Fred Meyer right now. I picked up 3 $30 sets and 3 minifigs. It was impossible to pass that deal up.

That's a smokin' deal. Except I have to pass it up because we don't have Fred Meyer around here

A few times a year, Toys'R'Us has Buy 1 get one at 50% off. That's when I buy the large (over $100.00) sets.

I bought R2-D2 a couple weeks ago.

Over 2000 pieces. It came in ten modules to build, which I spread over about 4 days. My brother suggested I take pictures throughout the process, but here is the finished model.

Awesome.

I love that build! Congrats!

That is fantastic, Strewth!

My first thought: "wow, that's huge. Must have taken forever."

Second thought: "neat, it comes with a nameplate!"

Third thought: "who on earth would fail to recognize R2-D2?"

It's not just a nameplate, it's got technical specs on it.

His head swivels, his third leg retracts into his body, his controller arms open and he has two compartment doors, one for his computer interface and the other for his buzz saw.

I saw 'Frozen' on the weekend with my kids.

The highlight was watching the Lego movie trailer before the movie even started. Seeing "1980's something space guy" float across the screen, with 'that' logo on his chest, and the 'dodgy' dual air tanks on his back...

Man, awesome waves of nostalgia just crashing around me everywhere.

Apparently I got misty eyed enough to prompt a 'are you crying from that Lego Trailer?' question from my wife...

Dawwww. I had a couple sets with those older space guys when I was a kid. I can't wait for the movie!

You'll notice that his front chin strap is broken exactly like every surviving space man today.

I think it was that level of authenticity that 'got me'.
