NBA Season 2013-2014 (Sep.) FIBA World Cup

Found the NBA game here on vacation. Why are they wearing "onesies"?

Well, they're T-shirts, not onesies.

The NBA realized that most fans look terrible in sleeveless jerseys, so in an attempt to goose sales they started having teams wear sleeved jerseys on occasion. It's been going on since last February, Golden State was the first team. I'm guessing all the teams were told to wear them today because of holiday exposure.

I think the real issue is the candy-cane striped socks? Right?

On a sub-HD TV here in Curacao they look like onesies.

Special flex sleeves, designed by Adidas, and worn by several college teams in March too, including the National Chamoion Louisville Cardinals.;)

They look dumb.

The problem was not the sleeves, but the horrid design. No stripes, no trim. They looked more like gym uniforms than something a pro team would wear.

Soccer exists in the world. It shouldn't be hard to find uniform designs with short sleeve shirts and shorts that actually look good. There is really no good excuse for trotting teams out like that.

That's a good point. Part of why I called them onesies was the lack of any detail.

Umm...

Well the Bulls just gave up on the season. Guess they figured they should get anything for Deng because he is a free agent after the season and they didn't plan to resign him apparently. A non-top 10 pick and a couple of second rounders aren't much but a salary dump though.

Yeah... wow.

I mean I know most analysts, talking heads, and even fans are just saying "Let Miami and Indiana start the Eastern Conference Finals already" there's still a lot of basketball to be played. Too early to give up the season.

Eh, Deng was most likely headed elsewhere after the season anyway.

That sounds like a pretty solid deal for the Bulls. It's a number of draft picks and $20 million in savings. Given they aren't likely to get far without Rose this year, might as well hope for the future.

Knicks beat Heat as J.R. Smith sits on the bench. Knicks actually pass the ball, have some assists, and let their two young shooting guards (1) actually play shooting guard, and (2) actually touch the ball. Do we really need further proof that shoot first, ask questions never type players like J.R. Smith (and Melo, for that matter) are anything but bad for their team? It baffles my mind how players like that stay in the league.

It's a perversion of the "we need players who can create their own shots" mentality. Ball movement, spreading the defense, and a healthy dose of pick-and-roll have always been the bedrocks of good offensive basketball in my mind.

Even last night, when the Knicks were at least moving the ball and spreading the defense, Melo still kept calling for the ball at the elbow or low post, looking for an iso opportunity. Felton and Shumpert kept the offense on track, though, and having JR on the end of the bench instead of shooting 3-for-15 helped immensely as well.

Zach Lowe of Grantland has been on a statistically-backed crusade this last couple of years to prove how overrated and terrible these types of players are. His exhibit A currently is Rudy Gay. Someone with a high usage rate and low FG% who demonstrably makes his team worse.

I feel like this is all a hangover from the types of players idolized in the 2000s (Iverson, McGrady, etc.). I hope that not only can the NBA come to grips with this reality, but that it trickles down to college, high school and AAU. We might see a sea change in how players develop and a renaissance of team play.

That's absolutely true as well. It's funny but years before the NBA changed the defensive rules that was my #1 complaint about the league. I felt in my gut like there would be an overall win once NBA offenses had to adjust to zone schemes and couldn't just park Ewing in the post or isolate with Charles Barkley. Low and behold, it's come true. Not saying I'm a prophet. Just happy with how the last 10 years or so have gone. Scoring is back up, team basketball is back up. GMs are using metrics to try and find players who share the ball, move the ball and play good defense. I feel like we're almost back to where basketball was in the 80s. Maybe better in some ways.

Agree 100%, DSGamer. That's why the Knicks are just so frustrating to watch these days. They seem to be regressing from a basketball philosophy standpoint, not to mention the frequent (and ridiculous) lapses in basic basketball IQ.

But it's also that compared to the amazingly entertaining basketball being played in the league right now, the Knicks look like the Bad News Bears. Thanks to ESPN, TNT and NBATV, however, there's an entertaining game to watch nearly every night, and if I can put my Knicks fandom aside, I can enjoy being an NBA fan during what is really a great time to be an NBA fan.

...aside from every other player going down with an injury. Bye, Jrue.

\Fantasy rant\

I had Horford and have Anderson and Kobe.

The guy in first is riding Lilard, Lowry (especially after the gay trade) and Mathews.

He cant catch an injury and if anything just keeps getting positive situations.

All the guys already sitting in the bottom half of the league are the ones that keep catching these injuries.

and yes the Knicks are a hot mess but I got my Oakley/Starks socks in the mail today.

I should order some of those socks and burn them.

Signed, Reggie Miller's biggest fan.

I'm anxiously awaiting lessons on the sport in the broadest sense over the past couple decades based on tonight's Nets-Heat game, y'all.

I don't know much about the right and wrong way to play the game. I can tell you that when Patrick Ewing and Charles Barkley played, I loved the NBA and watched a lot of basketball. I liked it better than what we have today. I still gravitate to the 90's era teams in NBA 2K14. I just wish there was a Barkley era Suns team.

I have not fund that playing more NBA 2K has led to me watching more NBA basketball. Mostly it makes me wish there was an NCAA version of the game, since that is what I still prefer overall.

i´m an old fan been watching NBA games since it started airing games in Spain late 80´s and the way it was played has changed a lot, i grew up with the Magic vs Bird "rivalry" and i still enjoy basketball, you still need stars to win games, but to win it all you need a team, and play as a team, one of the things people hated of Lebron James (i enjoy more the way Kevin Durant plays by the way) was that he was willing to give the extra pass to the open teammate instead of trying a hero shot or wathever you wanna call it, and for me that was a sing of a player who knows how to play this game, in the long run that´s what gives you titles.

Going back to Magic and Bird those two made those shots and knew how to throw that pass, that made them very difficult to defend because they could kill you in different ways, also they had great teammates that made those shots too (I´m a Laker fan by the way, and this season is gonna be pretty long, what a disaster of season) that´s why all the hero ball thing is a mess and a disaster in the long run, you need stars, but also need a team

Right there with you, buddy.

I seem to remember 2k11 or 2k12 getting an NCAA mod for the PC version. Not sure if they've kept up with that each year or not, but it was pretty fun when I tried it. Of course I still have College Hoops 2k8 sitting on my shelf. But each year it's harder and harder to go back to, as more and more features get added to NBA 2k.

So this makes me really happy. Well played, Internet. Well played.

Oden's back! The two handed dunk shortly after checking into the game was pretty cool. I hope he can stay healthy this time around.
