Hmm, anyone know how Beyondpod compares to the competition on Android? I'm not crazy about my current software, Doggcatcher.

I've never used Beyondpod, but Pocketcast is a great app.

Pocket Cast devs even said they had it working with the Chromecast awhile back, but were waiting on official APIs.

Plex, Cool.
I don't have Plex set up yet but with this I may just have to give it a try.
We need a Plex thread...

Might I suggest the "Stream anything to any device over a home network "catch-all" thread."? It's pretty much abandoned.

Ya, I saw it. Maybe a revival if I feel up to trying Plex and have q's.

Not yet, I don't think. Here's the list.

EDIT: While you're still not in luck, they just added 10 more apps since I posted it (site's updated).

Just in time for the holidays, 10 new apps have been added to the Chromecast family. Beginning today you can enjoy action sports, news, music videos, and more with the addition of VEVO, Red Bull.TV, Songza, PostTV, Viki, Revision 3 and BeyondPod.

And for those many holiday gatherings, you can also cast your personal media straight to your TV using Plex, Avia, or RealPlayer Cloud apps. There’s no need to huddle around small screens when you can share your own photos and videos using your phone, tablet, or laptop.

Hmm ah well. He can at least stream it from his iPad to the TV

Anyone check out Plex yet? I haven't had the opportunity to yet. I'll report back when I do.

YES!
I installed and set it up to stream using my Chromecast and was watching Django Uncained in about 20-30 minutes after my library was added.

Easy as pie.

you need the subscription in order to chromecast though. I signed up for a month to try it out.

Hmmm... didn't expect that. Thought you would only need the apps.

I'll check out the trial then. The only mental hurdle I can't get over is that Chromecast only uses wifi. I'd much prefer to used a wired device like Roku. Chromecast 2 maybe?

Roku already has a dedicated Plex app/channel if ethernet's that large a consideration.

What's the difference between plex and ps3 media server besides the price? I tried ps3 but the transcoding caused it to be a bit choppy while I was streaming an hd video. Also for chromecast I could just use chrome and put in the address of the media file in the address bar

Got plex set up and started feeding it bits of my (messy) library this morning. Didn't get to try the streaming bits yet, but I would appreciate any impressions on the mobile apps and/or best practices for cumbersome libraries of various stuff ranging from anime, music videos, stand up routines, foreign films, etc etc.

The last time I tried PS3 Media Server, it was a pretty bare-bones DLNA server that could try and transcode video if needed, but not well. Plex uses both a media managing backend and, usually, their own frontend client. The two work together to avoid transcoding as much as possible, plus the back-end can index and recognize television series episodes and films based on filenames, pulling down additional metadata to give you an organized rich interface for navigating literally terabytes of content.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!@!!!!!! Finally! WOOOOOOOO!!!

Totally stoked to try this out tonight!

Got mine yesterday. Tried some you tube vids and then netflix and worked great. Now, i was using the phone app. Does that mean I'm streaming THROUGH my phone or am I just directing the chromecast or ...?

It appears the app just sets up the communication between the interwebs via WiFi and tells chromecast what to retrieve from the web. I think s long as your device is on and has a connection to teh CC it maintains the stream.

The moment your device disconnects from CC it stops playback. you can use whatever other apps on your phone you want.

It should be just like everything else where you're just directing it to the streams.

Actually, it continues the stream even if your device is not powered on. I sometimes put a show on right before bed, shut off my tablet, and set the timer on the television. It's glorious:)

Yes, but the connection is maintained.
If you end the application on your phone it disconnects from the chromecast and the show will stop. It's happened to me.

Edit, wait, even if you power off your phone? Interesting, I've had my app crash and lose connection and CC will stop streaming...

I'll have to test that!

Man I love this thing!

My co-worker uses a VLC plugin to send content to his TV through chromecast.

I have to try this out. It's pretty choppy doing video through the browser. What's the plug in called?

So far I am a little bummed with how lacking it is I'm iOS. Biggest thing for my father in law was to be able to show photos and video that were on my ipad on the TV. I'm surprised it's not in the chromecast app. I am also surprised there is no send to chromecast option in the Chrome app.

Also do I have to pay for Plex? I see the app is $5 so do I also need to buy it on the PC and App Store?

Just the App Store. The server software is usually free.

How well does this device work with Pandora or Last FM? The only thing I can't get with my Wii U or PS3 are either of those apps for streaming audio.

I don't have a ton of albums on my phone/ipad/computer that I want to stream but I loved being able to stream Last FM and Pandora.

It would be worth is for $35

It works works well with Pandora. I don't believe Last FM is supported yet.

Right now, those would only work through tab streaming. So not really that much. They still haven't opened the API's, but I'm sure when they do, many of the mainstream stuff will quickly be made to work.

Darn. The lure of new technology is so strong...I wish I had a use for it.

SDK out. Allcast for android already updated and generally being awesome.

Hopefully iOS comes soon. If the chromecast can stream local media more easily than current hacked setups I will gush in appreciation.

I am currently installing Real Player Cloud on my PC in hopes of being able to stream video from there to my Chromecast. Wish me luck
