The vinyl spin-all

Ah, it seems like just yesterday when Radical Ans posted here saying he bought a record but had no turntable. Now he buys more records than all of us I think. And has a turntable to play them on. They grow up so fast!

I think that might be true. I'm not even in the country and had about 5 records delivered to my house. It's bad guys.... real bad...

New Autechre EP. Mmm-mm!

I spent my lunch break flipping through records today. I had never noticed this section of my local shop's bins before. They have some sections for weird stuff that doesn't really fit anywhere, this one made me chuckle:

There is also a section with the title "WTF."

It's getting close to holiday music time. Well, it has been for a couple weeks now if Retail venues are to be believed. I grabbed this little box set from the thrift store the other day.

There are a couple of 7" EPs in the box, but also stashed in there was this double EP 7" set:

Got a question about storage. I picked up one of those Expedit shelves from Ikea and as I was putting it together I realized there was a heating vent in the vicinity of where I was going to put it. Here's where it's at now:

IMAGE(http://i.imgur.com/N1OAPGyl.jpg)

The vent is on the floor under the right filing cabinet. Is the shelf far enough away that I can safely house my records there? I haven't filled the shelf just yet because I need to get something to shim the legs of the filing cabinets and level the whole setup out.

That's a little suspect, I reckon you'll be running your heat a lot in the winter. Maybe I'm being paranoid.

I think it could be okay. Central heating isn't going to be blowing as hot of air as, say a plug in heater or something. That would be a pretty bad idea. It's more constantly trying to keep things at a comfortable room temperature. So, if it's not blowing directly on them, I would think it's fine. It's probably way better for them than cold, damp air. I think you could put your hand by the records when it's blowing full bore to get an idea of how hot it is. Apparently 65-70 F is good according to Wikipedia.

Anyways, that's my gut feeling. I've never been particularly careful storing records because I haven't had much of a choice with temperatures and whatnot. I just try and make sure I get outer sleeves and upgrade the inner sleeve.

I went through this exact problem and decided not to risk it. Records go else where. I hadnt picked up the new Boards of Canada collections cause I think some is likely getting me them for xmas, I just cannot wait though. I found this shot of one of the EPs, such detail!

Perhaps you could get one of those diverters that go on top of the vent and push the air out front?

edit: something like this?

Thanks for the advise. The filing cabinet is already acting as a deflector somewhat so adding one of those plastic guys should probably be enough security. I'll do some quick tests with the heat on just to be sure.

Edit: quick temperature check shows that with the heat running there's no real difference between the back of the shelf (where the heat would be blowing up) and the rest of the room. I think I'll still get the defector and perhaps finally get all my records into sleeves.

Radical: that placement of your shelves should be just fine. As tuffalo said, I would be more worried about it directly blowing on the records. I have one of my shelves right near one of our radiators, and haven't had any issues.

Direct sunlight is probably a bigger issue than this.

Now that I've got my shelf sorted time for more pics!

Just got the 10th anniversary edition of Murder by Death's "Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them". Notice the cover is metalic to simulate the 10th anniversary tin.

The second disc is a bunch of bonus accoustic tracks. It also features some really awesome etched art on the back.

In addition I finally got my TMBG LP's!!!

That's super cool!

Oh my. It's arrived.

Back in the day, I remember ordering this over the phone when it first came out on CD.
So nice to have the vinyl!

Well crap.... I bought a 100 pack of plastic sleeves thinking it'd be enough and it ran out somewhere around Rush.

I may have a problem...

I really need to get a bunch of those.

I have a big box now of regular, oversize, 10" and 7." I'm slowly sleeving everything as I listen to new things at work. Had to order 50 more Mofi inner sleeves yesterday. Those things are great.

My new favorite record!

It also came with this small, silver backed record. I'm not sure how to play it....

My package from the Third Man Records "The Vault" club showed up today. It's beautiful.

Didn't realize till I went to flip the record that it only has music on one side and the other side has an etching:

These things always look cool but they're hard as hell to photograph.

Also I think "Rawhide & Tobacco" is the awesomest/most manly color combo there is.

It's super cool looking in person.

My haul from the Matador Records holiday sale came through:

Pavement, Ted Leo, and Darkside. So far so good.

Can't wait to receive the next Vault shipment from Third Man Records.

I finally got around to ordering a Yamaha AS-500BL integrated amplifier since my old receiver is officially dead. It's great, and I highly recommend it as a budget amplifier for a turntable setup.

The wife texted me the other day to say "I'm hanging out with Jason (a vinyl loving buddy of ours), and now I'm in a record store and I'm feeling awkward 'cos I don't know what to do with myself while he's browsing records - should I be looking for something?"

So I sent her off looking for the new Nightmares on Wax LP, and this happened.

EDIT - huh - not sure if that image embedded - Flickr have changed their BBcode links recently. If there's no picture, click the linky

So stoked about this one. My best find in a while!

Also part of the same haul:

I bought this for $1 at Good Will last night. I enjoy it, mainly because the "Heavy Metal" categorization is dubious at best after looking at the song list.

Oh come on, Starship Troopers is like the heaviest of metal. And the Allman Brothers, well who can forget their heavy metal Top Gear theme song Jessica?!
