Goojers with job opportunities

I would think that 5 years is a GOOD amount of time to stay at a job.

Disclaimer: Only out of college 3.5 years, still at first job.

I'm hitting the 5 year mark, and not seeing what I want to see. The issue is that this job is exactly what I want, but the corporate BS that gets in my way is getting annoying.

Literally intentionally setting impossible goals as part of the management strategy. Sell product A when everyone wants product B. Gaant charts for everything so that you spend a few hours minimum on weekly reporting in an R&D environment. Telling everyone that training is the individuals responsibility which is tracked on performance reviews and then not letting them go to training.

My sex shop is hiring!

The truth of it:
There are plenty of LGBTQ-oriented sex shops in the Davie St. area, so the client focus for our location is couples and women. We often get first-timers who may be intimidated by the atmosphere typical of sex shops in the area. It's also classier/upscale, so the quality of the toys and brands have a good reputation and tend to be discreetly packaged and displayed.

Due to the often sensitive and shy nature of many of our customers, we generally hire women since there's a very heavy lingerie focus on our inventory, and applicants would need to be people customers are comfortable with helping them in and out of lingerie.

I know this isn't exactly the right place to be posting this, but if anyone is in the vancouver area and know someone that might be interested, please reach out to me (to apply or for questions) or answer the posting directly.

My awesome company and awesome department within it are looking for a second shift (3-midnight) Technical Support Engineer with an understanding of enterprise storage environments.

Truly great place to work. Very cool folks. Even cooler work.

And did I mention the free craft beer on Friday afternoons? Yeah, there is that.

I found out today via LinkedIn that one of our Technical Services folks left the company. That means there will almost certainly be an available position.

It would be an Entry-Level IT Analyst postion, though I have no idea why it is called that, as there is no IT knowledge necessary. Primary responsibilities would entail: customer support (phone and email), new customer set-up and training, and some software testing (no formal knowledge necessary).

The office is located in Elmhurst, IL (though we've discussed a move to Des Plaines). If you have any questions, send me a PM.

Is it wrong that this makes me a little sad? The persons hired for customer support on IT issues need no IT experience. I know it's an entry level position, and people can learn, but....

The thing is, the job has little to nothing to do with IT. Which is why the name of the position is absolute garbage. The job is doing general support for our Student Management and Learning Management systems. They're typically answering calls from school secretaries, guidance counselors, and principals. Questions will include things like, "I'm trying to run a report to show x, y, and z broken down by q" or "How do I send an email to all the 6th graders".

Well alright, that doesn't sound so bad

I'm sure we've all experienced horror stories of calling in for "tech" support. All mine flashed before my eyes, and I shed a tear

My favorite was "Okay then, what does the power cord look like?"

Strangle you with sheer force of will, right through the damn phone.

Listing says Des Plaines now. Is that official? I ask because there are a couple people I'd want to pass this to, but location makes it depend.

Yeah, I don't know why it says Des Plaines, just like I don't know why it says "IT Analyst". The current office is in Elmhurst. We've been discussing a move for probably 4-5 years, but have yet to actually move (our office space has been so freaking cheap, it doesn't make sense to move).

The location in Elmhurst isn't super close to the Metra, but we've had people in the past who take the train and either bus, cab, or walk to/from the train station (about 1.5 miles). In the past, we've talked about trying to be close to the train in Des Plaines, but those locations are more expensive.

Looking for a freelance web designer to help me get a friend's websites in better shape. Will also need to train me on how to keep them updated (but I am a smart cookie and learn quickly). Looking to get the whole thing mostly up to date in the near future.

Specific things he wants:
Look at the sites and improve the design and execution
Has more knowledge and experience with sites so can make recommendations on how to make them better and know what I'm doing wrong

And teach me how to:
Link twitter accounts to the site
Make updates to pages
Get monthly updates of traffic, downloads, etc.
Make more email addresses for the site when needed

PM me if you are interested or have questions!

Does anyone have connections in the Roanoke/Rocky Mount/Westlake/Moneta Virginia area? I moved here a couple of weeks ago (living in a cabin on Smith Mountain Lake, wheee! owned by... my.. parents... less.. wh.e.e..ee) and have had zero luck finding.. anything. I've applied at about two dozen places, from the local libraries and banks to Lowes to the school system as a tech support guy, to freakin' Dollar Generals and have found nobody hiring/interested. I have a Masters degree in Biology, but my primary work has been entry level tech support / ISP troubleshooting (worked for Dell for a while and for an ISP).

I totally did not post this in the "A Gamer Without A Job" thread first, then edit, and re-post here, because that would be wrong.

*shifty-eyed dramatic pause*

So, is this the official "Goodjer looking for a job" thread? I've been told my job is coming to an end at the end of this year; I've been at the same job for more than 13 years, and have worked full-time from home for more than 8 of those years. So, trauma, change, all that. It's not an unexpected occurrence; I'm a contractor, and it's patently ludicrous to be on the same contract for 13.5 years, and the ancient, creaking dinosaur of an application I've been supporting is finally being put to bed this weekend. I mean, "VT220 emulator with a database running Oracle 9i" dinosaur. Actually, technologically speaking, "trilobite" might be a more accurate descriptor.

Anyways, I don't doubt my ability to find a new job; I live in the Twin Cities where we have a traditionally very strong job market (particularly in IT at this time), and I've got a reasonably solid resume. 15+ years doing business analysis, requirements, project management, writing, tech support (I refer to myself as the light-hitting five-tool infielder of my project, I do basically everything). Have managed the American Red Cross' blood banking system (tracks donors, collections, and manufacture/distribution of blood) on my project, so I have loads of experience running complex software development projects in a, to put it mildly, highly regulated environment, and have lived in a world where there are no scarier letters than "FDA".

I actually already have a job interview this afternoon (my first since Bill Clinton was president); somebody noticed my resume on the internal job board, and they're bidding a contract in my suburb less than 10 minutes from my house at the USPS, and I seem to really fit what they're looking for. Here's the issue--I have gotten so used to working from home, I don't want to stop doing it. It's perfect for me; I go in my office and stay there all day long, and I can stay focused. I don't go off and do weird things; my work breaks are pretty much posting on GWJ. I really love working from home, so, basically, this is my shot-in-the-dark "Anybody want an experienced BA/PM with loads of health care/regulated environment experience and let me continue working from home" post. I have no doubt I could ask literally several dozen of my coworkers and customers to vouch for my work ethic and my ability to work from home.

I'm just starting the job hunt; I was planning on starting it this week, and then I got the "come interview with me" call. I figured this is a group which seems to lean somewhat tech-y, and it was worth a shot.

FOR GOD'S SAKE, PEOPLE, I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN SHOWER BEFORE NOON AGAIN.

You want this thread. Feel free to check back here or ask if people have got jobs in your area, though!

Puce, I demand you give all of that up and go to work full time as a game/level/quest designer. Your Fallout mods are some of the most engaging things I have played in years.

Failing that, good luck to you. I wish I could help, but I don't know anyone outside of Texas.

Sorry that you've had no luck, but can't say I'm surprised. The only thing I know about that area is that it has never been very good for new jobs as long as I've been aware (since '00). Southwest Virginia is just a typically economically slow / depressed region, except Blacksburg, which is a hike from Smith Mountain Lake for a daily commute. But, Blacksburg is where the good new stuff is at, and even the possibility of a random job to hold you over for a while. Hope you don't mind being surrounded by more VT students than town residents, though. I do know some people in tech jobs (Rackspace) there, but no idea if your experience would help you, and I'm not close with them at all. IIRC there is an Echostar DishNetwork call center in Christiansburg, too. It certain shows up looking like one on google maps. You may want to also contact Vargen around here, as that's where he lives (studies?).

Are you looking for entry level IT work in the San Francisco East Bay Area? Specifically the Pleasanton CA area, which is just North of Silicon Valley.

My workplace, Blackhawk Network (BHN), has an opening in our Operations Control Center (OCC), or what most companies would refer to as a Network Operations Center (NOC). The job is located at their HQ office in Pleasanton.

The OCC supports the monitoring of BHN's global network, IT hardware and gift card processing applications in a 24/7 operations shop. You will certainly be starting out in the swing or grave shift position where the swing shift gets 5% differential pay increase, and the grave shift gets 10% differential pay increase.

For this entry level IT position, they are looking for someone with basic TCP/IP networking skills, with the understanding of how to PING, TRACERT, etc, and the understanding how a TCP/IP 3 way handshake occurs. You should have desktop support skills, although we don't directly support staff desktops, as there is a separate helpdesk department for that. Applicant needs to be able to type at ~25 WPM or better, and have excellent technical writing skills. Be ready to showcase your customer service skills, as you will be working with partners across the globe regarding gift card transaction processing technical escalations.

Though it is entry level IT work, it is a good starting point within a company that is growing fast (Google search for BHN's recently launched IPO, or the recent announcement that we have partnered up with PayPal). There would be the opportunity to pursue higher level technical or engineering jobs after a stint in the OCC (typically they like to see you work at least 1-2 years before being allowed to interview for other BHN positions).

Drop me a PM with a resume if you or someone you know in the SF East Bay area is interested and I'll get the resume in front of the BHN HR department.

Unbelievably, the place where I work, one of the leading genomics research institutions in the country (Cambridge, MA), is not swarming with millions of interviewees for Software Engineering positions. I know of two teams that are hiring (one is mine, one I've just started working with), and there are literally zillions of other positions open (including plenty for non-coders, if there are any scientists out there).

If you have a few years software development experience and can prove you're not a total dolt, I strongly recommend you apply. As an outsider I don't know how the salary compares for the area and field (I hear it's a bit lower, because nonprofit), but the people are hella nice, the job is relaxed, you get to go home at 5pm, and you get the moral satisfaction of knowing your working hours are going towards SCIENCE. Which for me at least is hella fulfilling.

If you want more info, feel free to PM me. I can't promise anything, but it's worth a shot!

Our hiring drive continues. Looking for several web developers of varying experience levels in Chicago.

We're a small team, with a high degree of control over our tools and stacks. We have older JSP sites, newer sites built in Ruby and deployed statically, Angular single-page apps, as well as PHP and Node in the mix. If you like working with a wide variety of languages and frameworks, we're up your alley. If all you want to do is your one favorite thing all day every day, probably not.

Being within the consumer marketing team, we are full-stack but front-end leaning (as we tend to use other dev teams' APIs as our backend). Casual workplace with, for example, tee shirt, shorts and flip flops commonplace in summer. Great opportunities for advancement, including management skills (few, if any, pure managers here). Just drop a line if you're interested or know anyone who may be. Looking for a handful of folks, from junior to senior, to expand the team.

[Cross Posted from the Ravenwood Castle - A GWJ Friendly Travel Destination thread]

Want to work in a castle? Ravenwood is hiring an Assistant Innkeeper!

No worries, MonoCheli's not going anywhere. Unfortunately though, the couple I hired to assist him in running Ravenwood has decided that they really miss Indiana, and are going to be leaving us shortly. So we're on the lookout for a new Assistant Innkeeper (and a new Housekeeper for that matter).

Hospitality experience is preferred, but isn't an absolute must. As I've posted before, my hiring philosophy is fairly simple. I'm a big believer that the key to hiring is finding talented people with the right inherent attitudes and personalities. Specific skills can be taught from there.

With that in mind, what we're looking for is: the ability to work hard, the willingness to learn a variety of tasks and the ability to work well within a small team. Potential tasks on any given day include: maintenance, office work, food service, housekeeping, light cooking, tending bar, event planning and teaching and/or playing games with guests. Overnight inn-sitting would be required on occasion. The primary focus for the position would be on the maintenance side of things, but in our team everybody does a bit of everything.

This is a salaried position, but does not include living arrangements in the castle. This position is long term, and will be a part of the castle's management team.

If you or someone you know is interested in helping us make Ravenwood Castle the premier gaming getaway destination, PM me or email me at jobs at ravenwoodcastle.com.

Over two months ago I posted about my company hiring. Since then, I was actually promoted to be the manager over one of the positions, which I've renamed to Technical Services Associate.

If anyone is interested, send your resume through craigslist or send me a PM.

A local position in my field(!) wants me to do a technical interview by phone next Monday morning, it's the next step before the HR interview which is in turn the final step.

Here's hoping I can pull it off and am able to remember all the random stuff they happen to ask about :/

Looking for a couple of Business Analysts and a Junior PM in Melbourne Australia.

Something of a long shot to post here - but one never knows.

Anyone with some experience in energy efficiency, program evaluation, or applied statistical research, we're looking for folks in Seattle.

Anyone know anything about the Fort Wayne, IN area? I'm in the IT field and my wife has lots of family there and we are contemplating a move, but not sure about the job situation since I know it used to be a thriving factory town. Not sure about the tech scene there.

The one time I was there, there was a horrible smell over the whole town. Might've been the factories you mentioned.

You look like you're hiring more for people with experience, but you might want to check out Oregon Tech's Renewable Energy Engineering Program the next time you do a hire for an entry-level position. The administration hasn't done a great job publicizing the program, but the people that go through the HVAC/green building track are supposed to come out with some pretty solid energy efficiency analysis skills. Just a thought.
