GWJ SolForge Tournament - #6 - Mono-Faction Mayhem - Done!

Congrats Cronox!

Thanks everyone for participating. If anyone has suggestions on how to improve this for the next time I'd love to hear them. I think given the small number of people playing I'd like to try running a Round Robin style tournament next time and I have a couple ideas for restrictions if people want to continue with using those to balance out the card pools.

[list][*]Round Robin is a great idea - there wasn't enough playing for me, especially as I drew against Cronox's Technocleric deck.
[*]Restrictions are a "must", to combat the pay-to-win nature. The novelty-er, the better i.e. only use cards that have more than one word in their name (no idea if that's actually a feasible restriction, but you get the idea).
[*]I'll be interested to see what functionality the in-built Tournaments system has to offer when that patches in later this month - I wonder if we could use that to get a draft tourney going.

I suspect their official tournament is going to be similar to how everyone else does it: you're just dumped into a special pool with randoms.

I have a decent idea for the next tournament so I think I'll post a sign-up announcement (with CLEAR instructions this time) sometime next week, with the start date hopefully the first week of December.

Introducing: GWJ SolForge Tournament II: Electric Highlander Boogaloo!

I'd like to think we had a decent time with the previous tournament, so let's give it a try again. The restricted format seemed to work fairly well so I thought a little more about other restrictions we could try. So this tournament is going to be a Highlander tournament. If you're not familiar with this style, it means you can only have one (1) copy of a card in your deck. Which means 30 unique cards in every deck.

Since I think this is a pretty hefty restriction, I've opened up the banned list to allow Heroics and the Savant cycle. With one copy allowed I can't imagine these will be terribly disruptive, but I could be wrong. This is for fun anyways, right?

Signups are now open here. I hope to start the tournament on 12/1/2013.

Rules:

  • This will be a round robin tournament
  • Each matchup will be determined from a best of three games.
  • Participants should try to have their matchup completed within 1 week. I will decide how to enforce this at a later point.
  • Asynchronous games are allowed, but live games are the preferred manner of play. It is up to the opponents in each round to agree on how they wish to play their match.
  • No Legendary Cards are allowed in player decks
  • Only a single copy of each card are allowed in player decks
  • Signups are in the Solforge GDoc
  • The bracket will be administered via Challonge, please make sure you have an account there and list it when signing up
  • Tournament will start no later than 12/1/2013.
  • Top/first name in each pairing should send the invite/challenge for each round.

Banned Cards:
Any cards of Legendary (red 6-pointed star) rarity

*reserved* (I will likely move most of the OP to this post once the tournament completes and will post a link to the next tournament if we decide to try another tournament).

If anyone has any suggestions for how they want this to run please let me know. I haven't run a CCG tournament before so this is likely going to be incredibly casual unless I see a need for more rules and regulations.

Also, I won't be participating unless we have an odd number of players.

Archived tournament information:

Now that Solforge has been out for a while, let's have a tournament Since having all the tournament discussion in a separate thread seemed to work well for Ascension, I thought we should do the same here.

Rules:

  • This will be a single elimination tournament
  • Each matchup will be determined from a best of three games.
  • Participants should try to have their matchup completed within 1 week. I will decide how to enforce this at a later point.
  • Asynchronous games are allowed, but live games are the preferred manner of play. It is up to the opponents in each round to agree on how they wish to play their match.
  • No Legendary or Heroic Cards are allowed in player decks
  • No "Savant" (ie. Steelshaper Savant, Lifeshaper Savant, Flameshaper Savant, Darkshaper Savant) cards are allowed
  • Signups are in the Solforge GDoc
  • The bracket will be administered via Challonge, please make sure you have an account there and list it when signing up
  • Tournament will start no later than 10/15/2013.
  • Top/first name in each pairing should send the invite/challenge for each round.

Flameshaper Savant

Count me in, looking forward to creating some new decks.

Great change-up, and at least something brings me back to SolForge.

This boogaloo could just be what the doctored ordered. Signed up.

I'm very happy to see we've already got as many signups as last time!

I know this is a holiday week her in the US, so if anyone finds themselves short on time for deck making please post in here and I'll extend the deck construction/signup phase. I decided to go with a 1 week signup/construction period because I felt that the two week gap from last time was too long and I almost forgot to start the tournament. But I'm not totally sure 1 week is enough time (especially with a holiday) so I'm willing to be a little flexible with the start date

Also, everyone should be aware that with a round robin tournament, this will last longer than the first tournament. To the best of my knowledge there still isn't a release date on the next major update to the game but we do know that will be bringing some new cards to the game along with balance and rarity changes. I don't think this will be a huge problem for us given the Highlander format, but I would like to remind people that changing their deck composition is permitted between rounds. However, you are not allowed to change the deck once you are playing your matches with your current opponent for the current round.

Ooo fresh meat! I mean, glad to have you aboard

Apologies in advance if I flake out. I don't have a hell of a lot of time and I've unfortunately (for solforge) have gotten into Hearthstone. It's really good.

Not a problem. There's nothing on the line, so if you flake we'll just mark it as a loss for you and your opponent gets a bye. If it's too problematic I'll contact you via PM and we'll decide what to do going forward.

I really need to give Hearthstone a try. Too many games right now to play

I used to dabble with the wow tcg, hearthstone is a simplification of those systems (for the better).

It's really good.

I think it takes a lot longer in hearthstone to get the cards you want than it does in SF but it's insanely easy to unlock 9 balanced decks and play against people around your level. Once it comes to iPad, I fear it may destroy my life. At least on PC I can't carry it with me.

Hey all, just a reminder I plan on starting the tournament some time tomorrow night. So consider this a last call

got some decks ready, a bit of tweaking to do....

My deck is still a mess. Will try to clean it up tomorrow afternoon before the tourney kicks off!

Invites for the tournament are going out now. Please let me know if you did not receive an invite.

The first round is:

casktapper v. Cronox
oilypenguin v. shoptroll
LtWarhound v. cyrax
Maclintock v. sparhawk

First name should send the game invite to the second.

You have until 11:59:59 PM EST on 12/8 to get your matches in. Best 2 out of 3 wins the round.

Good luck!

It's not on Challonge yet?

Sparhawk wrote:

It is, use the link in the email, don't try to find it by going directly to Challonge. Until you accept the invitation via the emailed link, Challonge won't show you the event even though you are supposed to be a part of it. That was my experience this morning.

Ah, got it. Thanks!
Weird that it won't update. But this works.

Shoptroll, I'm the worst. I'll forfeit this round. I may have forgotten that I needed to build a custom deck =)

I'm cool with restarting this match if you want to try and get a deck together. I may have screwed up my last turn

If we have time, that would be great. My iPad is with me in case I get a window to work something up. We should maybe try to do the game live this weekend or something as I fear my usual 1 turn a day isn't going to cut it.

Live match would be preferable. Send me a pm when you're ready to coordinate

Poopsmiths! I missed this thread. Too late to get in on the action, I assume?

I think I might be able to add you, which I think will add a bye into the mix which is fine with me. Put your info into the sign up sheet and I'll see what I can do after work.

I'll do that, but not 'til after work myself (work firewall blocks cloud storage sites).

You're welcome to my slot. A WiiU recently came into my life unexpectedly and, well, I don't think I'll be able to put in enough turns.

Maybe ask if Furtivespy wants in as well (he isn't yet, right?) I noticed him playing the game yesterday
and invited him into or group on Steam and he accepted as well. It will keep the number even and easier
to keep going then
