Interesting Kickstarter Catch-All

Heroquest 25th Anniversary

It's been live for a couple hours, and is already closing in on $150,000.

Well, I've pledged for Heroquest 25th Anniversary as well. They're at over 180k now

THIS is the game that got me into tabletop gaming!

Can't wait!

yeah I should have mentionned that if your wallet is on a diet, DO NOT VISIT THIS PAGE!

I'm wary of this one - it's being run through Canada, supposedly because the project creators have rights to distribute under the HeroQuest name in Canada and a few European countries, so everything is in CAD. And then the shipping price is NOT included in the package, along with the pledge to "not make money, but also not lose money on shipping" right in the project description - I'm really fearful of fulfillment coming from CanadaPost, and charging $50 for a $150 package.

I jumped on OGRE because it was an absolute steal at $150, I'm not really feeling that from this one.

Deathfire: Ruins of Nethermore.

Old school, first person view CRPG that's not just a dungeoun crawler, but harkens back to things like Might & Magic. The guy running it has been around the industry for quite a while and I think he presents this really well and has had meaningful updates, so it's sad to see the KS not doing as well as it needs to. Still, worth a look.

Ice Pick Lodge looks to be planning a Kickstarter to remake Pathologic

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Pathologic is a broken, buggy mess. It's also an amazing game. It's also also probably the most depressing game I've ever played.

I recently realized that I own it via a Humble Bundle. I should really get around to playing it.

So... the more I look into that Hero Quest Kickstarter the sketchier it seems. It's in Canadian funds, but in the FAQ they say that they have the publishing rites for Spain, all the components are being made in Europe, and apparently people have asked/emailed the company with questions and haven't gotten a reply :S

Not to mention the lack of shipping calculator, and then dragging on for two updates about "dealing with" the developer who was supposed to put together the shipping calculator...

Yeah, I was following the thread on BGG after the announcement, and a lot of the uncertainty was about whether Gamezone really has the rights, if Games Workshop might bring the space-hammerTM down on them, and how terrible the box art is. But I was willing to chalk some amount of that up to nerds being alarmist hand-wringing nerds. Now that the KS is up though, it's not looking more confidence-inspiring.

Still, in two days they're over halfway to beating Ogre. On the other hand, it's not like there's been a dearth of alternative quality dungeon-bash board games in the last 25 years.

Bad news...

Heroquest 25th Anniversary is the subject of an intellectual property dispute and is currently unavailable.
No need to check the servers — the rest of Kickstarter is doing just fine.

This project’s funding and the countdown to its deadline have been stopped. If the project becomes available again, the countdown will continue and the deadline will extend past the original deadline for as much time as the project was unavailable.

Your pledge is currently still active. If you'd like, you can manage your pledge at any time before the deadline. If you have a question, you can ask the project creator.

Thanks for your patience.

I don't think anyone here is surprised by that announcement

I wonder if it's Games Workshop or Hasbro, or someone else.

For what its worth, some more info in here:

I'm actually happy about this. I can dedicate my funds to something else.

It's probably Games Workshop because, well, Games Workshop

but if they truly only hold the right to some names and original minis then I don't see on what ground they would send a C&D but it's really typical of them to sue everybody.

From reading more on BGG (I fell down the rabbit hole, sorry work-I'm-supposed-to-be-doing-right-now), it sounds like Hasbro has the grounds. Game Zone (which is allegedly one guy running a failing Spanish miniatures business) has allegedly taken advantage of a legal loophole to sell a product called Hero Quest in Spain. There's no mention of a license from Hasbro (just an apparent okay from Hasbro Portugal), or the involvement, blessing of, or royalties to the original designer.

Roberto di Meglio (Ares Games publisher and designer of War of the Ring) sums it up:

It looks to me that Gamezone is trying to get away with
1) re-using Hasbro's old name, on the premise (faulty or not, it matters little from a moral standpoint) that it's not trademarked in Spain (as pointed out at the beginning of this thread).
2) Re-writing the game without licensing the game mechanics from the original designer.
3) Cloning the looks by creating art and sculpts suggestive of the original work.

And without shame they also call it an "anniversary edition" - if this is not licensed by any of the original copyright holders, it's the anniversary of WHAT?

And Jerry Hawthorne (designer of Mice and Mystics) angrily sums it up:

It's the greatest form of swindling. On a massive scale they have been able to trick folks into thinking they are backing an official product, but instead they will get a bootleg (or even nothing at all)

Hm, the cease and desist apparently came from Moon Design, which publishes the unrelated HeroQuest RPG system.

The first C&D, anyway. Hasbro and GW had to take a number.

I'll not keep updating with the goings-on of the HQ KS, just wanted to answer my own question in case anyone else was wondering.

Someone ran an IndieGoGo campaign to fund a Kickstarter campaign. Apparently you can divide by zero.

Kickstarter Campaign

I don't know if the proper response to this is laughter or tears.

Reminded me of this...

If you pledge more than $50 you'll get on the VIP list and have first dibs on a slot on ANY of the pledge levels in the actual campaign.

Approaching Infinity made its goal with 8 days to go. It's got some nice stretch goals, though, so if you're at all interested in a space adventure roguelike, check it out. I tried the alpha and it looks like it's going to be fun. I just hope it eventually allows key binding because the movement keys are vi style (like rogue, I guess).

Wild Season, for any Harvest Moon fans out there.

I'm really interested in this idea. A few games have played with focusing on using a camera- there's a lot of potential there.

Awesome! This movie has been haunting me lately. Saw a dude at the theater wearing a VM tshirt, then the theme song came on the radio a few days later. Can't wait!

I think we both had a moment because when the song came on to KEXP I squeed and explained the significance of it to Clover.

So so so looking forward to the movie. My main problem right now is that I have to make some friends watch the show so they know how awesome it is and want to see the movie with me. ;>
