I'm surprised they didn't hit goal in the first day!

Well, it looks....kinda stupid. I'm a voracious consumer of all things Firefly/Serenity and honestly? No desire for a USB stick. I have a keychain that looks similar, I'm good with that.

I have the key chain hanging from the rearview mirror on my car.

I keep meaning to put mine in the same place.

Plus you have to pay about $50 to get one. I don't need a Serenity USB stick that badly.

Added bonus - I live in a heavy christian community and my friends always think it is a cross, but get weird face when they realize it is a spaceship.

Meh. It's pretty much the same.

This may be my favorite post of the week.

Nathan Fillion tweeted this last night. I chuckled. Spoilers, I guess.

FYI, a Firefly marathon is going on right now on the Science Channel.

Yup, she needs to examine my warp core.

Thank you so much for saying she should be in engineering instead of "shouldn't she be in the kitchen?"

STEM women FTW!

As long as she can replicate me a sandwich from engineering.

Barefoot.

Doesn't Geordi have seniority?

Also, where is her uniform? What kind of ship is she running?

Business casual?

Fox shut down that USB drive Kickstarter

Dear Browncoats,

It's with tremendous disappointment that I have to report that, despite our being the official license holder for this project, we have been asked by Fox to shut down the Kickstarter because they will not allow the crowd-sourcing at this time. The project lives on and will launch in February.

We had every intention of using Kickstarter and its tremendous potential to not just crowd-source the funding, but the design and packaging as well. The project will continue: we are dropping some of the more insane details we were shooting for [Blue Sun keychain attachment, sound-speaker / light up base, diorama box] and concentrate on an uncompromised beautiful drive+package to be available in a smaller initial run

(emphasis mine)

I clearly don't understand what the value of being the license holder is now.

Not being sued for simply making the thing, apparently. But still having the licensee able to control everything about how you run your business using their licensed material.

We saw this last time when there was a Firefly game on Kickstarter, and while they were "licensed", Fox claimed the license provisions for "marketing" did not include running a Kickstarter campaign.

Fox refuses to sell this IP but is nonetheless bound and determined to shut down anything that might increase its value and visibility. I really wish News Corp. would just implode.

Eh, I'm not so sure that USB drive would increase the value or visibility. The prices they were asking for were ridiculous, and though the kickstarter said the "design was incomplete" that model they had looked pretty wretched.

Agreed. $50 for a flash drive seems a little ridiculous to me.

Maybe but a lot of people were happy to step up and pay for it and those are people that were continuing to talk about Firefly that may not have been had this not happened.

I thought that the issue with that one was that the game used pictures from Serenity, and the license holders only had the license to the TV show.

T-shirt or tote bag, anyone?

I game with a bunch of folks who work for GameSalute/Springboard, who were helping the project along. The final nail was that Fox blocked them from using Kickstarter to crowdfund the project.

Art can always change - which was part of the mess that started with Doom That Came To Atlantic City. MB threw a fit because it looked "too similar" to Monopoly, so the first thing they had to do after the close of the Kickstarter was rework all the art.
