Playstation 4

Played a bit of AC4 and a bit of Killzone. Neither game is great, but I really am enjoying how seamless the OS works with the games. I really do feel like the next gen live streaming is the "future". It's been around forever, but the consoles are going to make it so utterly easy that it's going to revolutionize the mainstream market.

Chalk me up in the dud category. Mine powered up and worked long enough to play around with the menus, but then it powered off and now boots to a pulsing blue light with no video output.

I've tried multiple HDMI cables, directly plugging into the TV rather than the receiver, and various safe mode boot cycles with no luck. Amazon doesn't seem to have any available for replacements at the moment.

PBLOD - Pulsing Blue Light of Death? Sorry to hear and hope this is as rare for other users as Sony intimated.

GAF has a running thread on hardware issues and people are posting the steps Sony is giving them to try. I saw a couple of posts on that first page with the pulsing blue light and a couple of the solutions worked for some users. Might be worth a look if you're stuck in a support loop with Sony. YMMV.

Just found another little feature I like. I noticed several games had updated last night in my download list and was curious what happened. I found that if you select a game, hit option, then select "Update History", you'll get the patch notes for those updates.

Right. I'm actually glad I waited all of a sudden. To be sure, Microsoft will undoubtedly have issues as well, though Sony's insistance on .04% will only make matters worse for them. But when you get down to brass tax, I'm thinking the only launch hardware I can trust purchasing are Nintendo systems.

Maybe I'll wait a whole year before snagging a PS4, instead of waiting until March.

*Brass Tacks.

But I'm also glad I'm waiting, at least for awhile. Glad to see most people happy, and hope everybody that has issues gets them sorted soon.

It seems there's an issue with Warframe's current game patcher. People have been experienced freezing and console crashes (myself). Either don't load Warframe up now, or leave the patcher active and hope for the best.

Can someone point me in the direction of a psn id list? I has no friends.

Thanks for the neogaf link. They had a few things in there I hadn't tried yet. I've managed to get it back into safe mode and reset to factory defaults, but then it lapses back into PBLOD territory again.

About to finish breakfast and dig into it some more. Seems almost like some kind of HDMI handshake problem.

There's a list of PS4 people here. There's a bigger list of PSN people somewhere I believe.

Y'know, I actually considered Googling that phrase to see if I was using it in the right context? Instead, looks like I should have considered the spelling. This is what happens when you've only heard a phrase, never read it.

Alright... time to stream.

Wrapping my PS4 in a flannel blanket last night to deaden the fan noise ended up fixing the fan problem completely. Now it's totally normal.

I'm still going to call support eventually and get it replaced, but it's really weird forcing the fan to go at top speed due to heat ended up knocking it into place.

My fan isn't so much sick sounding as it is just LOUD! Anyone else notice how ridiculously loud the fan is?

Could of just had a little extra plastic on the fan coming out of production. Don't even know what that is called. You know the kind you used to see on plastic model kits?

EDIT: it's called flash?

not all that different from the venerable hit your tv till it works method. Some things never change!

A friend of mine had a PC you could reboot by kicking, it was quite convenient. My Mac SE/30 also needs a good slapping to boot sometimes.

Is this another thing Sony and MS are flip flopping on? MS designs a huge box that's quieter than the competition?

Mine doesn't run any louder than the PS3 slim as far as I can tell.

After numerous attempts I was able to boot into safe mode, do a factory reset, and get back into the main menu. I attempted to launch a game and the screen became glitchy and the PS4 powered off. Now it's back to square one. I've tried several different cables, different TVs, turning it upside down, reseating the hard drive. Nothing works. Seems to just be legitimately broken.

Called around locally to attempt to find another one to buy, but apparently sold out means sold out.

Setting up twitch was beyond simple. I wish finding a friend's stream were easier though, I could find tuffalobuffalo via the "Live from PlayStation" app by searching for his name, but I'd have expected to select 'watch' or something similar from my friend list.

I've been sampling some more games, and thought I'd share my thoughts:
- Having never played a Madden game, I think Madden 25 was pretty great. It may be an incremental update, but I really liked it.
- I played FIFA 14, and really like it too. I'm very clueless with regard to football/soccer, but I could see why people love the game.
- Killzone is gorgeous and I love it. I am a fan of KZ games, and I am a fan of the eye candy, so I suspect I may like this one more than others.
- AC4 is amazing too, especially when I compare it to the PS3 version. The visual disparity is huge, and I imagine people who haven't played a PC version are going to be blown away. I'm likely going to spend more time playing this above the rest for now.

Most of these new games have embraced the same kind of UI style as the new consoles, so the transition from the OS menu to the game menu is seamless. So far, I haven't been disappointed by any of the games or the console itself. I really hope others have the same luck.

My unit is actually very quiet. The only sound I've heard that I've noticed is the drive spinning down after initially loading a game.

Got pretty far in Contrast. The twitch broadcasting works really great. Time to get outside for awhile but I'll be back at it later this afternoon.

Same. I don't hear the unit at all. Bf4 looks as good as my PC, granted im not running the latest and greatest but a gtx660 isn't exactly a slouch.

My PS4 is slightly louder than my Slim. What's the normal suppose to be? I've heard a range of reports.

This is about how I would describe mine. It does get notably warm on top (side when vertical), though.

Also, I finally noticed one glaring hole in the launch lineup this morning: where's the Youtube app...?

Having a great time playing some more today. Loving the interface and checking out the "What's New" screen is cool to find other players screenshots/videos/streams. Really slick! And also being able to see other friends adding each other and being able to add those people through that, it's a really nice feature. And a great way to find GWJ peeps!

Been having trouble with BF4 crashing, twice during campaign. One of those times it corrupted my save for the game, so had to start campaign over. Wasn't that far, but just a heads up for anyone else.

The times I've taken breaks or needed a breather from bigger games, Resogun has been awesome to hop into really quick! Had a nice run on the 1st level in Arcade on Experienced and think I might have touched off a GWJ Resogun war...

...This gonna be fun!!!

(Posting this from my phone, so sorry if the pics aren't the best. Can't tell too well on here. Clicking through they look okay though. Just a heads up :D)

Has anyone tried plugging in a stereo headset into the controller?

I am curious about the sound quality and if it actually outputs a stereo feed. Being able to plug in a nice pair of headphones with a mic. and get a good, clean, dynamic sound would be great feature, especially for late night gaming.

I'm having audio issues!!

My setup:
ps4 ---HDMI---> Onkyo Receiver ---HDMI---> TV

PS4 options:
HDMI. Linear PCM.

Using the selection "Multichannel" on my receiver (as I did on my PS3) gives me 5.1 surround sound in the system music and Resogun, but in Contrast and Music Unlimited it is sending 2.0 to the receiver. It doesn't matter the setting I choose on the receiver bc that won't change the fact the ps4 is sending 2.0 Linear PCM.

I wish it had the options the PS3 had.

24 hours and everything seems to be going ok so far. On the one hand, I haven't received any PSN maintenance messages so far today. On the other, the "What's new" section hasn't been populating at all. Until Leohart85 mentioned it above, I honestly assumed they had disabled it for the day to reduce server load. The other online features seem to be working fine for me today.

On the noise front, it sounds about like my PS3 slim did when it was new, except the drive is louder, especially you put in a BluRay movie. It seems to spin up and then slow down noisily in the previews, but once the movie actually starts it is pretty quiet. (the drive isn't really loud when running, just when spinning up and when slowing down.)

I've played some Resogun and the first three chapters of Killzone so far. The former is fun, but I don't know how long it will hold my interest. The latter is better than I expected, but my expectations were pretty low. It is nowhere close to my favorite shooter, but I quite liked Chapter 3. Also, the controller is growing on me.

I also downloaded but haven't tried Contrast and started up Assassin's Creed to get the install going and the patch downloaded. I haven't previously played any Assassin's Creed games except the first hour of so of the original, but the relative lack of titles, the Amazon sale, and PIRATES convinced me to give this one a try. I almost bought last year's title based on the Rev. War setting, but then reconsidered after hearing what a mess it was from Certis and Justin McElroy on the conference call.

I also loaded up Flower because my daughter wanted to play on the new console, but I didn't have any other kid-friendly fare. (Lego Marvel is in Santa's closet). Unsurprisingly, it still looks very pretty on the new system.

I also was disappointed to find that War Thunder wasn't yet available. A google search indicates that when the developer said it would be ready for Launch day they actually meant European launch day. Guess I'll be waiting a couple of weeks for that one. By then, I'll have Zelda 3DS and the Mario 3D World so I don't know how much time I'll have for their FTP game.
