NCAA Football 2013-2014 discussion

I agree that they aren't 1 or 2, but who would you say is 3 if not them? The two Bigs are really down this year.

Oh, I know, the ACC is probably third overall. I have no idea who I'd put ahead of them.

But it's Duke, man, Duke!

It's worse than that year Wake Forest went to the Orange Bowl!

At least Cal scored on USC and had no turnovers. (I'm trying for positives today--see below.)

After recovering from yet another close, bitter loss, I think Utah fans can take some hope from the fact Utah has had one of the toughest (if not the toughest according to Sagarin) schedules and several of our losses have come down to the wire. (Although our biggest win against Stanford could have been yet another one.) On the other hand our offense often seems to be MIA. Turnovers, weak offensive line, using multiple running backs seemingly without rhyme or reason, and some unimaginative play calling at times. But, you know, Stanford! Washington State and Colorado are our last hopes for bowl eligibility. But first...

Oregon. No problem. It's at Eugene, you say? We still have Stanford.

I'll gladly trade you our points against USC for your win against stanfurd.

Let's leave aside the revelation that Jameis Winston is being investigated for rape - sorry, Abu - and instead focus on a question that we can get to the bottom of:

Are there ANY good games this week? Anything with wide appeal?

The best I've heard is Georgia - Auburn, and I'm not all that interested. Might watch it just to get some football in on Saturday, since the Ags are off.

Louisville-Houston would have had awesome BCS implications if Houston could have scored from 1st and goal last week against UCF. Now... whatever. Hard to get hyped about Russell Athletic Bowl. At least there should be another good team there. Maybe Clemson or Miami would be fun to play.

But it is a Sat 7pm start for Louisville... first Sat night game I can remember in years. So someone at ESPN thinks it's worth watching at least.

I haven't heard much about the Winston stuff, but one thing I did hear on ESPN a few min ago was that apparently the suspect was 5'9" to 5'11" and Jameis is 6'4". Quite a bit of difference there. So this may be a lot of smoke and no fire at all.

Well, either there's going to be DNA evidence or not, but all reports are that he is 100‰ the accused in this case. Maybe the girl is terrible at estimating height. Maybe his college is exaggerating his height, like every other college does.

Here's hoping he's innocent, but either way, it seems very ugly that the police sat on it for so long.

The trainwreck that is 1-9 Cal (0-7 conference) @ 3-6 Colorado (0-6 conference) could have a masochistic appeal to more than the fans of the respective schools.

You rang?

Short answer to your question: No, not really. Most everything seems pretty lopsided.

Never fear, though: We're getting closer to Rivalry Games. Those are always fun.

Anyway, this week:

Top 25 games
No. 25 Georgia at No. 7 Auburn, 3:30 p.m. (CBS)
No. 12 Oklahoma State at No. 24 Texas, 3:30 p.m. (Fox)

BCS games
No. 3 Ohio State at Illinois, noon (ESPN)
Syracuse at No. 2 Florida State, 3:30 p.m. (ABC)
No. 1 Alabama at Mississippi State, 7:45 p.m. (ESPN)
No. 4 Stanford at USC, 8 p.m. (ABC)
Texas Tech vs. No. 5 Baylor in Dallas, 7 p.m. (Fox)

Best ACC game
No. 23 Miami at Duke, 3:30 p.m. (ESPNU)
... don't laugh; Duke is bowl eligible and has a shot at the Coastal title if GT loses this week (GT plays Clemson); Duke holds the tiebreak over VT.

Clemson-GT play tonight, and UCLA-Washington are Friday.

All I will say about the situation is that if Winston did do this, and is convicted, he needs to be in jail. Period.

I hope like hell that he wasn't involved at all, and if he was he is innocent, but any sort of violence against women is beyond the pale, I don't care how well you throw a football.

Good on you, man. +Respect.

I've seen a Note Dame fan I know (not a friend) tear down the girl who accused a ND player and later took her own life. We'll probably never know the truth in her case, but character assassination of alleged rape victims is disgusting.

FYI, everything else about Winston seems to have been exemplary. Hopefully the truth will come out, and hopefully he will be innocent of this.

What he said -

Seriously. No matter what happens, the woman who was victimized will have to deal with this a long time and the media circus will probably make everything worse. I hope the truth comes out quickly.

Thanks. I obviously have a lot of thoughts on this, but for right now I want to wait and see what happens. The part that I bolded is the thing that bothers me the most. I can say that I feel sick to my stomach with the mere possibility that this is true. My kid loves the guy, and he's 13, so I am sure that he has seen this news (we haven't had a chance to talk about it though). Hell, I love the guy, based on what we have seen publicly.

What has me most distressed is that obviously something happened, we just don't (and may never) know exactly what it was. Unless he is able to prove without a doubt that he didn't commit a crime, this will hang over his head forever. If the case goes away because of a lack of evidence, I don't know how I would feel about that. On top of that, a young woman was attacked, and regardless of the circumstances, her life is going to be a mess. There are a lot of "fans" out there who are already attacking her, which is bulls**t.

Ugh... I need to stop talking about this. It's making me more upset than it should (and not for football reasons... I have 2 daughters)

Whoa, nelly. Here's a local story that's bound to get some national attention:

WSSU quarterback attacked by 5 Virginia State players

Winston-Salem State and Virginia State are scheduled to play each other tomorrow for the CIAA championship. (The CIAA is a D2 HBCU conference.) The WSSU QB was apparently attacked in a bathroom during a luncheon.

And now word is that our starting QB may not be playing tomorrow against Oregon because of a concussion suffered in last week's defeat. He would be replaced by our walk-on backup. This team is kind of falling apart.

That is crazy and terrible. That report says his injuries will likely keep him out of the game. If you get more details, please share.

Looks like the game between WSSU and VS has been cancelled.

Good call

Things like this make me sad. (sorry if it seems sappy). It's only football. Is it really that important? IMO, they should not only cancel the game, but the VaState team should forfeit.

I was about to link to this exact story, but Ego beat me to it.

This guy (looks to be a backup RB) is in jail on an assault charge.

No doubt!

Good!

It's been more than a week and I'm still not ready to talk about the Ducks cratering last week. Ugh.

For those following the Jameis Winston story, amazing revelations here:

The state attorney has thrown the Tallahassee PD all the way under the bus. He's done everything but actually accuse them of a cover-up.

There is so much that is really, really weird about this case. Why did the police not interview Winston if he were a suspect? Why did Winston's lawyer have access to the full police report, something the SA said doesn't normally happen? On that note... really? SAs don't generally provide police reports to the defense? That seems... off (I am not a lawyer, of course).

I feel that there is a LOT of political posturing going on here, a LOT of CYA. Hell, for all we know, the kid may not be involved, but the authorities completely screwed up the case. By their ham-handedness, perhaps JW is taking some unwarranted heat?

As a fan of the team, it is a very weird situation to be in. On the one hand, I am hoping that JW is not involved, at least not in a criminal way. I would hope that Jimbo Fisher runs a clean program. He kicked Greg Reid and Greg Dent off the team (one superstar and one up and coming star), and yet Fisher stands behind Winston, which makes me think that there are aspects of this case that we don't know about yet. Hell, if some of the rumors I am hearing are true (most likely not, but still...) then Winston is getting a royal screwing.

On the other hand, there was (by all public measure) a sexual assault. There is a victim here. Even though I love college ball, I can do so by conveniently forgetting the special treatment that athletes at this level enjoy. I have daughters, one of which is close to college age.

It just seems like a complete sh*tshow, and I don't know if there can be a resolution that is fair and just. Ugh.

Been out running errands and cleaning today, so I've missed any football. Holy crap, Kansas might get a Big 12 win today! They lead WVU 17-7 at the half, with 222 yards rushing in the first half. 167 of it goes to James Sims, who also has 2 TD's. They have also apparently benched Jake Heaps in favor of true freshman Monte Cozart, but he is mostly running the option and handing the ball off, as he is just 3/6 for 48 yards.

I don't get to be excited for Jayhawk football often, so allow me to update.

*update* Sims just rushed for his 3rd TD, and has 181 yards with over 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Kansas now leads 24-7! Rock Chalk Jayhawks!

I'm assuming that they are legally required to provide it after charging the suspect - there's no discovery rules until there's a legal case, I'm guessing. Since no charges have been filed, I'm guessing the SA doesn't like to show his entire hand.

For a while it looked like the Big 12 bottom feeders might rise as one and get wins today. Then Iowa State quickly reverts back to true form and makes Barry Switzer's tweet from yesterday come true. Man I hate that guy.

" @Barry_Switzer
Since everyone beats ISU at home, I want to be the first to congratulate @OU_CoachStoops on tying the record of 157 wins! #coachescabana
7:01 AM - 15 Nov 2013 "

If our receivers could actually catch balls we could be right in this game. Instead they drop perfectly thrown balls, or bat them into the air if they're feeling particularly frisky. At least our back-from-injury TE came to play. Our backup QB Schulz is doing all right.

Well, that escalated quickly.

f*cking UCF. They should have lost to Temple and Houston. Unbelievable.

And wow. Duke has just put the nail in Miami. Up 18 with a minute.
