What We Know

  • Bravely Default is a the spiritual successor to Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light for the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS. It might not officially be a Final Fantasy game, but it sure as heck looks like one.
  • Bravely Default was developed by Square-Enix and was originally released in Japan in 2011. After significant interest from fans, Nintendo announced earlier this year that they would be publishing the game in North America, Europe, and Australia. The version we're getting is actually an expanded version, dubbed Bravely Default: For the Sequel in Japan, that includes a number of new features designed for the forthcoming sequel.
  • The game features a jobs system inspired by games like Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy Tactics. Combat is turn-based and involves optionally over-playing your turn for a chance at greater damage, leaving you vulnerable during future turns.

Release Date: December 5th, 2013 (Japan); December 6th, 2013 (Europe); December 7th, 2013 (Australia); February 7th, 2014 (North America)

I look forward to much gnashing of teeth over the microtransactions

I wish it would hurry up and get here. I can't wait.

I haven't heard about this.

It's effectively a short cut for people who are impatient. I doubt it'll get much use among most RPG players. But we'll still whinge about it anyways

I have absolutely no problem with that system as described.

Same here. But people (not necessarily here) wailed when they revealed microtransactions in Plants Vs. Zombies 2, so yeah.

February 7th in North America.

Ditto, can't wait for this one!

Woo! Day one Perch!

EDIT: Oh for crying out loud, February is looking increasingly like I'm just handing Uncle Ninty my wallet. (Auntie Squeenix too)

I am ready!

Another trailer probably not much new stuff but hey February is a long way away so this helps tide me over.

There's a demo up now for our PAL territory posters.

Very excited for this!

You get it before we do. December 7th in Australia.

I can't see the title without thinking of someone going through the process of bankruptcy in a stoical and vaguely optimistic fashion.

Having said that: wow, that looks fantastic! The visuals are very original FF:Tactics brought forward to current standards. I just hope it doesn't release too late here, I'm still waiting on SMT IV for crying out loud.

Edit: Oh hey, I checked, we actually get it December this year. /dance

Double post and you already beat me to it? Dang.

Yeah I checked up on the release date shortly after posting. Yay!

Release date delays are really weird, especially for stuff out of Japan that often has months long differences between the EU and NA releases. I've never quite understood that.

Looks like the hope that "Europe first" also meant "better voice acting", as it did with Xenoblade and The Last Story, was too much to hope. Alas.

Xenoblade had good voice acting?

If you switched on the Japanese voices, yes.

...well, I liked the voice acting. Compared to most JRPG's, at least. I don't remember it being painful, at least, and was fine leaving it on English.

Ditto, I rather like Xenoblade's voice acting in English.

Do special/limited editions have more game content or is it just physical items like the art books, music, cards.....? I'm going to pre-order the just the game but I would be upset with myself if the special edition had more game play. any thoughts?

The limited edition just has extra physical items. Game content is the same across both versions.

Man, this sounds good. Just what I'm in the mood for. If only we didn't have to wait three more months for it.

It's out in three days, PALs!

Also, they priced the microtransaction drink at €0.99/£0.89, so I'd guess $0.99 in North America. Personally, my 3DS sleeps all night, so I don't mind only getting to use SP once a day or once every few days. Honestly, it'll probably just end up as a system I ignore.

Sounds to me like they should've called it Final Fantasy XVI.

Why is it taking 2 months longer to get to the US? They can't claim translation issues if EU/UK/Aussies are getting it this week.

I'd argue "framerates" or whatnot that keeps NTSC and PAL from playing nice, but it's on a 3DS, not a TV. And I'm actually not sure if NTSC or PAL matters much in regards to HD Televisions, either.

I dunno. Nintendo is just starting to love Europe more.
