iPad Games (and Apps) Catch All

Thanks to it being mentioned on the podcast somewhat recently, I've been checking out Empire over the last week or so. Really fun mash up of city building, deck building, and grid combat. Reminds me of how I felt after playing Actraiser back in the day. Has anyone else checked it out?

Sale on a bunch of Knizia games: Tigris, Ra, Le Havre, A Brief History of the World, Tikal, and Medici.

Which of these are worth getting? I haven't played any Knizia games. I've heard that Le Havre is hard to get into.

fwiw, Le Havre is not Knizia. I would of found it hard to follow in the app if I had not played the cardboard version.

Codito sale, not just Knizia games. Le Havre is Uwe Rosenberg.

And A Brief History of the World is Ragnar Brothers, while Tikal is Kiesling and Kramer.

T&E is an amazing game. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I just picked up Empire, Dashagon, and I'm going to give it a whirl this weekend. Looking forward to it.

Thanks everyone for the your thoughts on the Codito games. Now, off to watch those video reviews and decide which ones I'll grab.

Phantom Leader is on sale this weekend for 4.99, regularly 14.99.

A couple of us posted a page or two back. I enjoyed it quite a bit and am looking forward to digging into the major revamp that was recently released.

Yeah that rebalance patch was awesome, like the idea of customizing my emperor. Feels good and fits in thematically. Archers are still *so* strong though at least now they cost a gem too! =)

I've been waiting to buy until the game design settled a bit, but I don't think I can resist any longer. Sounds like a real breath of fresh air.

I ended up picking up all of these games. I've only tried Tikal and History of the World so far and I really like both of them. Looks like I'll get a lot of play time out of the $6 I spent on these games.

Thanks jonnypolite. I've been waiting for Phantom Leader to come on sale.

If you like the boardgame, it's a faithful port. If you've never played the boardgame, well - it's a *faithful* port. Both nail-biting and dry. Overall, good.

Would you say it's hard to learn, having not played the boardgame? I caved now that it's on sale so that's done, but I wonder if I'll ever muster the strength to actually play it!

No, it's not hard to play, but you want to read ALL the in-game information first, and you want to remember that it's HARD. You'll get wiped out a lot at the start.

Oh, that is so bought.

Easy call on double-dipping with this one.

FTL... On a portable device... I may just sell my computer...

I'm in the same ship.

If FTL had come out simultaneously on iPad and PC I probably would have bought it on iPad. But I haven't touched it since playing through once. I think I'll be skipping this one.

Is there any reason to keep playing Empire? Any goal that I can hit which will unlock new units, buildings, cards, etc.?

Played till 50 victory points, and haven't seen anything new since about turn 6. Is this all there is? If so, big thumbs down on this game.

Im in this boat. It has some entertainment value and Im not upset about the money spent, but even with the update it gets old rather quickly. There's just not much to the game.

I felt the same. After hearing so much good stuff about it I was expecting more, but I was basically just tapping to get to the end by halfway through my first game and I don't think I'll go back to it.

A fairly standard mobile game I guess: fun in small doses as a background game while you're doing something else.

Oceanhorn looks pretty good

For me it's about wringing out as much score as I can given the tight confines the game has set. As you've noted, the focus is in no way on providing you a drip of new content to unlock. Sorry for the potentially absurd example, but to me it's like saying Chess is no good because you've seen all it has to offer after one game. I'm not saying Empire is a timeless classic or anything, but it can be pretty engaging at least for me. Of course it comes down to personal preference and I can totally see how some wouldn't it enjoy it that much.

It's not so much that each game is the same, it's that within each game there's not that much to keep my interest.

I'll give it another couple of games to see if my opinion changes, anyway.

Has anyone checked out Small World 2 yet? I apparently got it for free since I bought Small World 1. I haven't checked out part deux yet.
Sorry if you guys have already talked about this game (like Empire =)

Your ship has been invaded by 2 Mantis enemies and fire has broken out in the shield room. The only choice is to open the air lock and suck you and the enemies out to space.
