They need to get inspired by mad max, more specifically road warrior.

I also like to imagine the behind the scenes conversation with the product placement manager complaining about how showing the Charger stuck on the zombies doesn't show the car in the best light and offering helpful suggestions like "Can it not get stuck?"

I had to laugh at that part of the episode. They tried really hard with the product placement and comments, "Fastest one we've got." Only to end up stuck on a few zombies.

I can rationalize the use of the Hyundai if you argue gas mileage. Realistically, it would seem, they should all be driving 4 wheel drive vehicles or big dump trucks.

Yeah, I'm sure that Hyundai was thrilled when the Hyundai stuck in the tiny wet spot as they drove it off road earlier in the series.

Someone might have already posted this 6 months back. Bad Lip Reading

Holy crap. La-Bibbida-Bibba-Dum had me cackling out loud.

"Cluck. Went the chicken."

I completely agree on that lays point, Hobbes. I literally crying out "keep your eyes on the road!!!!" During that part. It was so obvious he'd hit something.

Full disclosure, I do take my eyes off the road when I drive. But it's less than 2 seconds at a time. I really can't look away longer than that. And when I do, I immediately slow down. It's not even voluntary, it's instinct at this point.

Besides, Michonne is right there, how much of a control freak must you be...

Funny that he backed up and got stuck on a pile of zombies while driving a Charger.

The same exact thing happened to me except:

Replace the Charger with a 1973 Plymouth Satellite.
Replace the Zombies with snow pile.

My car lifted off the ground and was stuck. I had to get a ride to work while my dad got a shovel to move the snow from under the gas tank.

As long as you didn't start hitting pedestrians with a hammer once you got out of the car. Otherwise, I'm done watching this show and following you on Instagram instead.

Was anyone else quite surprised by Carol leaving?

I was, some at work were not and half expected her demise! It was a right hook for me.
I was also sad that that young couple had to die to make a point.

Rick saw a threat in her that made him make that decision and rightly so. She really wasn't trustworthy. Those people she off'd (did I just say that?) are in the same boat as all the others now. They are trying to save them and really, they are locked away now. It's not like they can kill more than just the other sick ones in that block.

I guess now that i think about it, it really was expected.

I thought it was one of the strongest episodes since the very beginning. As both Chris Jericho on Talking Bad and Ben Schwartz in Rolling Stone observed, the episode was all about "letting go." There were copious examples of characters needing to let go of something. In the end, I think the writers are trying to say that letting go of a bit of your humanity is necessary, but too much renders one a danger to a community trying to survive together.

My take away was that this episode emphasized that our band of intrepid survivors are now seriously feeling the effects of the slog of war. They no longer have a human foe, but rather the relentless zombie hordes. I believe that their brief period of security also triggered the onset of some PTSD in many characters. But mostly, it feels like many of the characters are nearing the end of their ability to just keep fighting for a home that is not going to last. As they add members to their group, the stories are starting to be familiar. Folks found some safety, but something, whether it be human or zombie, tore it apart.

Without The Governor and human enemies, the show feels like more and more like Battlestar Galactica. They are in search of a place they can call home and rebuild, yet their non-human, and therefore non-rational, foe continues to pursue them. They are forced to make many of the same kinds of sacrifices when people in their community begin to fail to live up to the standards required to keep the society secure.

Carol was a danger, not because she was unstable, but because she had lost that last bit of humanity that would allow her to see a bigger picture. Yes, the two people she killed might have needed to be euthanized at that moment. Yes, the kids probably need to be taught the harsh realities of surviving in this world. But her manner was to do so in secret and avoid any confrontation. A community needs trust, and there is no way to predict what the next step she would take without asking for any input or permission. The fact that she wanted Rick to just keep it to himself emphasizes that her actions are no longer something that can be tolerated.

I wonder if Rick had already decided that he was likely going to let Carol go at the end of this trip before leaving. Further, did he get any input from, at least, Herschel about what his plans were? And holy hell, how is Darryl going to react once they get back? Rick has to be upfront and honest, or he risks a similar fate that Merle suffered when he lied about killing Michonne.

Also, there is to be a growing number of folks that need to be banished, as both Tyreese and Bob are more liabilities than allies. I like that part of the story is the real challenge to growing a community. And it is not just whether someone seems like a good addition now, but what are they going to be like as they change. Because this is now a zombie war, and war changes people.

The last thing I took away was that the writers and the director are getting much better about balancing the drama with the action. While this was a meaty episode with a lot of important conversations, it was balanced by just the right amount of zombie action and occasional scares. I'd have to dig back through past episodes, but this might go down as my favorite so far.

My complaint with the episode has to do with the zombie portions. Why aren't any of them following the rules? Stay quiet, don't shoot unless absolutely necessary, etc etc.

And you don't hack at shrubbery with a katana.

I agree on most of your post other than that Tyreese and Bob may not be worth it.

Tyreese yes snapped but other than fighting with Rick has only put himself at risk. He also just went through a huge ordeal and once Michone really talked to him straight about it he seemed to improve quite a bit. He may not have huge advantages but overall he has been trust worthy so believe he still deserves a chance.

Bob is a little more risky I agree. However, also has a huge upside. He is a medic and use to using weapons. In that world those are probably the two biggest skills to have. They currently have a doctor who is sick and a vet who is helping sick people and risking himself. They just lost Carol who is the one Herchel taught most of the stuff too earlier on. He is a risk but as long as someone keeps tabs on him might be worth it.

I hated that she was using her katana for that... Also I agree that they shouldn't be using ammo so readily.

I like that after the last season (with their war against the Governor), the theme to this season seems to be "the enemy within." Lots of stuff causing suspicion and mistrust among the group and that seems to be making some decent drama.

Bob, however, is terrible. If you take him at face value (he's a military trained medic!) he sounds good but virtually every scene he's in you see that he's complete rubbish. I don't have Andrea levels of hatred for him yet, but it's getting close.

As far as Tyrese, they're really playing the I HAVE A DEATHWISH IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED card a little too much for my taste.

JC wrote:

Untrue. You hack at EVERYTHING with a katana. And use a minimal amount of force/thought while doing it. Since everyone knows katana's always stay razor sharp.

Just wait until they get back and he figures out what happened with Carol. I think it'll be a cagematch between Tyreese and Daryl to see who gets their shot at Rick first.

Although I'm starting to think the writers might try throwing Daryl and Michone together now that Carol is out.

Honestly... I bet Rick is going to take the easy way out and say Carol got eaten. Which could make for much more interesting TV when she shows up again further down the line.
And I agree, CptDomano, we've already been seeing Daryl and Michonne getting a bit closer, demonstrating they care for each other (for example, Darryl says "good" when Michonne says she won't be going out looking for the Governor anymore).

What happened to goofy blonde haired dude? I saw the hippie chick's leg but which one of them was being eaten across the street? If it was the girl then the guy is unaccounted for.

I think Tyrese will be okay after this. He will know who killed his special lady friend so that's some closure. He may have wanted to kill her but I'm going to guess that Rick/Herschel will talk to him about revenge killing him turning him into a monster like Carol and how banishment is far worse a punishment than death. But yeah, they're pushing the limits of portraying Tyrese in this deathwish role. Time to move on.

That was the girl being eaten, I think I saw her long hair spread out around her head as she was being snacked on. They waited and waited for him (David I think his name was), but he never showed. Rick had given him his watch, saying "be here at this hour", but still no one. So yes, he's unaccounted for, and could potentially run into Carol. Especially since I believe she took their car, so he might not be too happy about that. Or show up right before she leaves and they team up or something. Who knows.

Honestly, I'm not sure about Tyrese. His portrayal up til now was of someone really unhinged. I get that he's grieving, but wow, he went over the edge a bit back there. Things might be better after his talk with Michonne, but... I don't know, I'm just not sure. I'm going to have to wait and see how it plays out. As I recall, he was pretty level-headed in the comics (well, aside from one spoilery incident), but my memory's rather fuzzy.

Remember, he isn't just greiving Karen's murder; he is dealing with the (perceived) fact that no one seems to care that two people were killed and burned (possibly before dying). He is dealing with his sister being sick from a disease that has directly led to two deaths and indirectly led to about 10 others, and the rescue mission to save her ran into a horde of zombies so big that there is no hope of dealing with it. Assuming he gets back to the prison and assuming his sister is alive, he will be just fine.

Tyrese is the new Andrea.

That's totally fair, Atras. He definitely has had a lot to deal with lately. Not to mention the entire zombie apocalypse thing is still happening with no end in sight. As much as I like to complain, I'm not sure I would do as well in similar circumstances.

Also I am pretty sure that Rick might just tell the group that Carol left on her own. Not sure will have to see. He might just say that he confronted her she admitted it and decided to leave.

I think that is his best approach. Maybe "She confessed and we decided she should leave."

I think Rick has to be truthful about Carol. If he lies, it's a big sign that Carol is coming back. But I don't think Rick is dumb enough to believe he can get away with lying, since carol very well could drive straight back to the prison.

I'm not sure about that. Considering how Rick has been lately, I wouldn't be surprised. He's been pretty broken for awhile now.

To be fair, the show perpetuates the zombie trope of the undead being ridiculously brittle/fragile- there's no real need to maintain your weapons when the walkers can be decapitated by a single blow from any old thing you can find within reach.

Except for the one time there's a horde and your machete decides to conveniently get stuck on the squishy skull of a decaying zombie. Since, as we all know, it is possible to be TOO good at mushing a zombie face

Can a katana really cut horizontally through a skull?

PRG013 wrote:

It's possible, but the cut and form would have to be perfect. What she's doing isn't.
