Interesting Kickstarter Catch-All

I've had pretty mixed results, but that's more or less what I always expected. This isn't a purchase, it's patronage, and like all patronage, sometimes you won't like what you sponsored. And some of the teams are certainly more ethically challenged than others, so treading carefully is important.

The way I figure it is this: a backed project is money gone, probably forever, and then maybe I'll get something cool a year later. Or maybe not. But as long as I felt good about backing the project at the time, then I got my money's worth right there, and the actual product is gravy.

I think the overall process might be a little bit like angel investing.... most of the time, it doesn't work out, but sometimes you get something that's just wicked cool, worth all the rest of the money. The OGRE game, for instance, looks like it's going to be in that category.

So say we all.

I've received two complete kickstarter/indiegogo projects so so far, although the stretch goal rewards for both are still a bit in the future, and have seen one indiegogo project come to completion, although there were no goods for me to receive from it.

I expect most of my backed projects will miss their deadline, and I'm fine with that. With 14 projects backed (good grief!) but not completed, I would be shacked if all of them successfully produce on their pitches. I have reasonable guesses on which ones those will be too.

That's just how it goes.

It looks and feels really high quality, excited to give it a go!

I am waiting on mine. It just cleared customs today!!! Yay!

I still regret not Kicking that one!

So, I wanted to back River City Ransom. But seeing I must consider it a preorder didn't backed it.

Now, they are just asking for it.

They are accepting donation after the kickstarter thru their web pages.

Is that legit?

The have reached the goal, so, they will ship the game at one point, that's the pledge, right? So that's a preorder now?

Heehee. I hope that game does pull through, even though it's one of the more bizarre Kickstarters I've seen...

I mean they are licensing the rights to make a sequel to the North American release of a game from a franchise that is still going in Japan. Weird they weren'tmkickstarting a localization of the games that have released between River City Ransom and now.

Shadowrun Returns did something very similar. That was how I bought the game.

I really wanted to buy in at the Disasterpiece level of rcr. This may be a good second chance to do that.

These guys are so close...

I know they get money anyway due to the indiegogo thing, but they are only a few hundered from their goal and there are lots of $30 3D printed catapults and flowers left available if you don't want any UV curable resin.

They made it...

OK, I'll never play but I may have to back this just because of the sheer bizarreness of it all.

Well, if that succeeds, I know what we're getting Rabbit to play during the relevant GWJ fundraiser. Actually, it sounds pretty cool.

lol

Wow. Apparently Steve Jackson's house was destroyed in the Austin flooding last night.

I can't imagine all the awesome treasures that were lost with such an event.

Hopefully the OGRE HQ is ok. Nothing would suck more than having to write off 80% of the product due to flooding in Austin.

I've mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, I loved 7th Guest as a kid, and it's still one of my favorite games to this day. On the other hand, I really feel the era of FMV has passed...

Looks like I know what my next podcast will be about

Don't get me wrong; I loved 7th Guest and 11th Hour when they came out. But I grabbed them again recently on GoG and... they really haven't aged well. They're basically just collections of puzzles that would look more at home in a mobile game these days. There are FMV cut scenes giving the story, but there is a very distinct separation between gameplay and story. They actually released a later collection called Stauf's Fun House that was just the puzzles; that's how cleanly they could be separated.

And ignore the acting in the cut scenes.

So yeah, groundbreaking in their day but probably best regarded as historical artifacts now.

If you're a fan of games like Mafia, Werewolf, The Resistance, and other "hidden roles" style games - I've recently backed Two Rooms and a Boom after playing it at Origins this year.

It sorta promises to be the mother of all hidden roles games.

The base game is that players are split into two rooms/areas. They are then randomly dealt cards, assigning them to the red team, or the blue team. The blue team has a player that will be The President. Red has a "Bomber".

Each "room" elects a leader, and every few minutes the leader of each room sends someone from their room, to the opposing room (hostage exchange).

After a few such trades, the bomb goes off killing everyone in that room. If the bomber is in the room with the president - the remaining red players win. Otherwise the blue team wins.

The game then has elements to complicate this original goal (The President is dying and must meet up with The Doctor for his team to win. The Bomber needs to meet an Engineer or the bomb won't go off), or even create their own weird goals (The Zombie must infect EVERYONE in the game so that all the people alive at the end are Zombies).

Very fun party game for 6-30 people, and one that I've been eagerly waiting to make it to KickStarter.

The stretch goals have been adding 5 cards/roles at a time to the game - there's a library in the print-and-play version of something like 150 different roles, so it's exciting to see so much getting added in.

Another Japanese TTRPG translation project from a GWJ alumnus: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/diamondsutra/ryuutama-natural-fantasy-role-playing-game

Destruction Derby-esque Next Car Game gets a kickstarter.

Lavabit has a Kickstarter up to clean up and release the source code for it's backend. For those who don't know what Lavabit is, it's the software Snowden used to leak the NSA infoamtion.

Blurple

Grorange

Sadly, blurple is not new.

1993 through 1994 The craft remained unchanged with the 61X cases and blue/purple color paint commonly referred to as "blurple".

Incidentally, those tippy things can be tons of fun (almost said a 'blast') to ride, but you will never look cool doing it.

Shut. Up.

The Manhattan Project: Digital Edition - The Board game in iPad, Android, PC, and Mac form.

Never bought the board game, but now I think I'll get both (thanks to Rabbit's praise of the game).

Also bring up Faeria again as they hit their first goal, want them to get guild support, and there are only four days left till it ends. If people want to go in, I'll upgrade my pledge to the $100 tier so I can get four additional keys. I'll put in $40 the others pay $15 (retail is $25), but I get the vanity items... >.>;

PM if that interests anyone.

Interesting take on a deck of cards. I never wanted to buy any until I saw the artwork.

Also not gaming related..but man so sweet: 360 Camera developed by someone from Google that decided to run with it.

I've got Manhattan Project, and it's a really awesome worker placement game. Has just enough player interaction, and it's always a close race at the end of the game.

What I love about the Kickstarter project for the digital version is that, in theory, you should be able to do cross-platform multiplayer. So playing a game with someone on iOS, Android, PC, and Mac - all at the same time!

Thoughts on the expansion?
