Preview of Neverwinter From Cryptic and PWE

Thanks AnimeJ, I'll keep helping out.

Another question: I like to run solo, what would be the best class/build to run, if you had to pick one?

I never had any problems soloing with the Rogue. STAB STAB

That's what I rolled, a Drow rogue. She's sexy and deadly.

Added: Is there an active Guild?

I believe most GWJers were playing with Grievance.

Pretty much every class solos well, especially once you get a companion.

Yeah, I really found that to be true. I'm not using any potions any more since I got my cleric companion, except maybe of Boss fights when she gets mobbed.

Hit Lvl 19 with my Great Weapon Fighter, need to make some gold for a horse. I don't even have 1 gold yet, never mind 5. Any hints on where I can farm some quick gold?

Another question: Does anyone have any luck using the Neverwinter Gateway? I'm trying to use it to manage my Professions and when I click on Collect Results, it hangs. I also loaded the Neverwinter Mobile App by NSI and it either disconnects or hangs. (My phone is an LG Optimus Pro.)

How do you guys manage your professions off-line?

For the mount, just use the mount rental tokens they gave you, play through your quests normally, don't spend any cash and you should have more than enough to buy the mount once you run out of tokens. The increase in cash drops as you level goes up fairly quickly.

As for the gateway, that's what I use to use while I was at work and then it started having so many problems with hanging up or kicking me out that I just gave up.

Yep. In general, you're not likely to have mount money at that point, but given a few levels you should have more than enough.

Hit 20 last night and rented a horse. A dwarf looks 'odd' on a horse, legs sticking out. I miss my goat from WoW.

Anybody paid the $$/Zen for a faster mount?

And, I wound up joining the Promordial guild.

I ended up paying about $15 for a mount during a sale. For me it was worth it because I had multiple characters and did a lot of PvP. The speed bonus was immediately noticeable and there are several mounts that if you buy them, they are available to all of your characters, not just the one you purchase it with.

Oh! That sounds like a good deal. But, then you have to buy multiple character slots.... Seems like they rape you at every turn.

I ponied up for one of the founder packs, which came with a horse. I think the pack as a whole was really worth it.

The more I see posts in here, the more I wanna play. Maybe I didn't gave enought chance to that game.

Is the Arc download good?

I think that on the whole, Neverwinter is a very solid MMO, but one that gets kind of lost in the shuffle. Add in that I feel they really launched prematurely(very much so), that when people hit the level cap and found a host of issues, such as no real endgame content and half finished character classes, a lot of people jumped ship. And that was followed up by people reading about all of this, and jumping ship.

Yeah it can be really fun until you hit max level then the grind hits you. Plus, your companion becomes useless in the max level zone, PvP isn't as fun because you are undergeared, etc etc.

Anyone try out the new ranger class?

Nope. I've got a character slot saved for one, but didn't know that the patch had hit.

I don't think it has

Made a new character yesterday to ease myself back in. The Ranger was not available yet.

It is currently on the playtest server.

It will be released with the expansion patch (no idea when).

Just started playing this for the first time about a week ago. So far I like it. Having read most of Salvatore's works and some Ed Greenwood I love the setting more than most I'm sure. Got a rogue and a guardian fighter. Hope it has some legs on it. I do wish it had a aimed ranged class though.

The major expansion/patch is planned for 12/5/13

I tested the Hunter Ranger on the preview server, and I can tell you this much so far:

The class plays remarkably well at low levels. I only played to level 5, so I could test out the initial skills and see if it's something I'm interested in continuing once the game goes live. The first skill you get only targets the one enemy, and does relatively low damage but at a pretty quick pace. The impression I got was that it's for bringing down solid, reliable damage from range.

The second skill you get is Split Shot. This is where things get really interesting. Once you press down the [default] right-mouse button, a cone appears in front of you and begins to narrow. This determines the spread of your shot, and also the amount of damage you will deal with the attack once you let go of the button. Holding for full focus will give the most damage against a single enemy, but it takes a couple of seconds to get that shot. In my experience the damage is not exponential and therefore you don't really need to focus all the way to get the best effect. It's entirely situational and requires a little bit of strategy to utilize this skill well. With that said, the shot is really easy to get familiar with, but keeps you steady while enemies might be able to whittle away at you.

The third skill you get is the daily power Seismic Shot. Seismic Shot does a decent knockback effect in a long cylinder, and does very reasonable damage (about twice a fully charged Split Shot). The only caveat is that it takes about half a second to actually fire, and that means it can be interrupted or you can take damage while you are casting it. What's really strange is that the skill shows a new bit in the tooltip: Uses 100% of Action Points. This got me curious, so I began looking. The Action Point gem is striated at 25% increments, and daily powers (for the Ranger at least) can vary in the amount of Action Points that get used. Distracting Shot, which does low damage but interrupts, is a daily power that only uses 25% of your Action Points. I need to check to see if this is Ranger-specific or if this is happening to all the classes.

The fourth skill is an Aspect, which is the term used for the passive traits of the Ranger. Each Aspect has a different, interesting effect. This one is Aspect of the Eagle (or Hawk) and adds 3' to all ranged attacks. There's one that I like the look of called Aspect of the Pack which gives combat advantage to you and any ally within 10' of your position. Not sure if this only applies when you would normally have combat advantage, or always.

Finally, I got a skill point to spend however I want, and I wanted to test out Rain of Arrows. Rain of Arrows does great damage in a small impact zone that is placeable. Anyone that's ever been a Cleric or a Wizard knows what this looks like: press the button and a circle appears. Place the circle and click to fire. The circle is small - about 5' or so in radius. This means it is very precise, and therefore not a good skill to use when you're being beaten on. It does, however, add a lot of damage over time to the area that the circle is activated upon.

Overall, I like the Ranger a lot. It's got a lot of strategic value, as many of the encounter skills and Aspects provide bonuses to you and another player. Add to that respectable damage, and you've got a great addition to any team. However, I don't see this class getting nearly as much damage as the Rogue or Great Weapon Fighter. What I see it doing instead is adding a lot of value as a force multiplier while providing great consistent DPS. For spike damage, nothing beats the Rogue's Shocking Execution, and there is no skill in the Ranger's repertoire that comes close to the potential that Shocking Execution offers.

Oh, and now that my wife and I have hit 60 with our main characters (Guardian Fighter and Trickster Rogue), I'd be interested in joining a guild of Goodjers. Does one exist? We're not looking to do end-game content or anything consistent, we'd just like to have a tag and a chat channel.

Most Goodjers had been tagging along with the Grievance guild for Neverwinter. I've ended up sticking with that guild for FFXIV as well. They're generally a good group of people and we Goodjers are like a small silent faction within the guild.

It's now on steam : http://store.steampowered.com/app/10...

I didn't want to use the arc launcher, guess I'm somewhat happy to see it there then.

Thought about moving my install. No launcher for the Steam version?

Installing it, will see.

It's the 6gigs install so far.

at first, I had the game installed without the Arc Launcher. I removed it, and wanted it back, and it told me to get the Arc launcher.

EDIT : Just launch the game thru Steam, it's the Neverwinter Launcher, not the Arc one. I'll be ok with that one.

So does the launcher still handle patching? Is it on Steam just to be there? Don't see the point in re-downloading the game, if so.

hum, the launcher seemed to handle the patch. At least, a quick 3 megs patch.

tho, steam wallet integration was in the game.
