Euro Truck Simulator 2 catch-all

in case anyone is using the DelanClip and Face Track Noire, here is the ini I use for my settings.

They seem to work well for me.

OK, I need some help here: {ableist slur}ers? exhaust brakes?

I've read that in real trucks, air brakes are often used sparingly, since 1) stopping a heavy load at speed requires a massive dissipation of energy and puts a lot of stress on friction brakes and 2) you can deplete the reserve of compressed air (thus having to wait for the tanks to refill).

So, when going downhill, it's common to use the {ableist slur}er and/or exhaust ("jake") brakes to reduce (or maintain) the speed of the vehicle. I believe the {ableist slur}er uses the transmission, while the jake brake controls valve timing so the engine itself acts as a compressor to dissipate energy.

I believe in "auto {ableist slur}er" mode (the default) ETS2 engages the {ableist slur}er for you when you release the accelerator. But I'm not sure about that?

The latest patch added "air brake simulation" which allows the air reserves to be depleted as they would in a real truck. I want to make all this stuff as simulator-y as possible, which means I need to understand what I'm doing. So that leaves me questions:

1) When do I use the {ableist slur}er versus the jake brake versus the air brake? For what reasons would I prefer one over the other? Should they all be used in combination?

2) I'm completely out of control points on my G27. I managed to fit {ableist slur}er increase / decrease onto the wheel, but there's nowhere to put the jake brake. I'm wondering if a flight control throttle should be added to the mix - has anybody used this with the game?

Jake brakes are actually engine brakes, not exhaust brakes. The way it works is that when you hit it, the engine sucks air into the cylinders as the pistons compress, and are {ableist slur} accordingly, slowing the crankshaft speed, which reduces the overall speed of the vehicle. There is such a thing as an exhaust brake, but that works by closing off the exhaust pipe and increasing compression and {ableist slur}ing piston movement that way. Both operate on the same basic principle of slowing the crankshaft, but use different methods. Pretty sure that everying in ETS2 uses a Jake/Engine brake though.

All that out of the way, if you're a "screw the establishment" type(most municipalities ban jake brake/engine brake due to the noise generated) you can set the game up so that braking will be accomplished primarily through the use of the jake/engine brake. Just make sure you're downshifting when you're braking. It'll stop being effective otherwise.

Oculus Rift Support.

This guy is a gigantic nerd.

Gah, that dude doesn't know that they drive on the right side of the road in Europe! And I have no idea why he wants the UI overlay mirrors... with head tracking you just turn your head and look at the actual mirrors...

I will definitely buy a Rift for this game. Sigh.

Holy crap that Oculus support looks incredible.

Apparently he was aware of that, just brain dumped in the middle of geeking out super, super hard.

I am incredibly amused by two different people saying that ETS2 is the exact game they really, really wanted OR for.

ETS2 should feature prominently in the Rift marketing materials

I expect the Rift will be like TrackIR: best in games where you're in the perspective of a person who is mostly stationary, but piloting a vehicle of some sort. No need for weird supplemental movement controls or turret style turning to make 180 turns in a game like ETS2 - when you move your head, it maps 1:1 to what your avatar would see on screen if he also moved his head.

Right, I'm in the midst of listening to this week's conference call where the guys discuss the Rift. The nausea talk made me a bit nervous (I do tend to get a bit motion sick with certain games / shakeycam movies). But I figure if the game emulates me sitting in one place the odd motion simulator dissonance effect would be minimal.

Ho ho, ETS 2 and the DLC is now on sale. For those who already have the game and just haven't jumped on the DLC, its 25% off @$9.74. If you don't have the game, you can buy the game + DLC for 50% off @$17.50.

I'll definitely be hopping onto the DLC when I get back home tonight.

What's the consensus on the DLC? Note that I've played the game for all of 3 hours at this point.

I've only done 1 delivery in the new areas, but it was nice. Smaller roads and really nice scenery.

The DLC is cool.

However, there's a lot to explore without it. Unless you're running out of road (or you're especially interested in eastern Europe) you might want to explore the base game fully first.

Also: looks like they just released version 1.7, which added the new Volvo FH. Can't wait to check it out

I've been playing for a few days after a long hiatus, jumped several patches and the expansion, and I have to say the game is better than ever.

The locations added by the expansion seem more vibrant than the stock game, I suppose the designers are more comfortable now, so you see more frequent activity in the landscape, more people, and unique little tableaus. One example was a WWII memorial that I think was in Austria, close to the Hungarian border.

I really love the new photo-mode, you can take easily take spectacular pictures with it.

Wow, your foliage looks amazing. Are you running any mods?

The only visual mod I have on for these is an HDR tweak, other than that I'm using the highest settings and spending a fair amount of time adjusting the depth of field parameters on the camera tool.

So just out of curiosity, let's say I have this friend who is considering getting an Oculus (1080p) for this game alone, all the rest just being gravey.

Any idea how much extra HP the Rift would drain from a gaming laptop? I...um I mean, he gets good performance currently with maybe 80% of the visual bells and whistles maxed.

Waah, the new FH model is a whole different truck. If you've already got the old FH it's "Classic" and you have to go buy the new one.

Guess I need to do a trade-in...

My new FH:

Need a better shot, but I wanted to take it out for a quick spin

Nice. I need to upgrade mine but I need to make another run or two to pay for it; just upgraded a garage and bought a truck for a new driver.

In the meantime, the new photo tools are fun, if a little fiddly.

Oy, I got the new FH up to 145 kph... and it got really squirrely. Lost control and caused a three car accident

I need to remember how gosh darned fast the Volvo can be. And how hard it can be to stop! It's more difficult when you turn auto {ableist slur}er off.

I really like them! I need to go more scenic places now. Still working my way through the expansion countries and it's a lot of fun; just encountered some incredibly hairy switchbacks.

Oh, I know you guys can't get enough of my new FH:

Fun observation about the new Volvo: the grille actually changes to reflect the engine. Only the top few engines don the "FH16" badge and get the chrome grille.

Also, I believe there's only one interior now (well two if you count the UK version). The in-dash gps seems to be included by default which I think makes this the cheapest way to get an in-dash GPS now.

The general rule-of-thumb with the Rift dev kit is that you need to maintain a frame rate of no less than 60fps, at 1280x800 resolution with stereo rendering. Naturally, substitute 1080p for the (probable) production version.

Not to be a downer, but I can't imagine many laptops pushing ETS2 at 60fps in 1080p stereo. Few desktop machines could do that.

The best rift experiences are currently things that are simple (old) enough to run really fast; like Half-Life 2.

Oh well.

At least it's Friday.

Well, we've still got a while before the Rift becomes an actual consumer product, so start saving up for a new gaming laptop to go with it now

Or even a gaming PC in the old-school metal box format. Much better performance, far better price/performance ratio and, let's face it, with a Rift and steering wheel, your stuck in one place anyway

No room for a PC tower setup, but if this Big TV and SteamBox initiatives take hold and allow me to just have a PC "box" tucked away while the signal wirelessly streams to any random laptop, then I will most definitely be upgrading in the next couple years!

Make it happen, Gabe. Let me give you my monies!

Halloween-themed DLC!

I have yet to play more ETS2 than the tutorial, but I'm oddly tempted to spend $2 on virtual paint.
