GWJ SolForge Tournament - #6 - Mono-Faction Mayhem - Done!

Weird, when I click the spreadsheet I get is the one with all GWJ players...didn't notice one for the tournament.
Thanks for including me. Wish you could still play though!
-edit-
noticed now the tabs on the bottom. Totally did not see those.
Added my name just for completion sakes.

This is what happened to me. And I was confused about how I ended up signed up without doing it myself, but it was late and I didn't think about it. And then I forgot that this all happened on a separate thread and thought that this had fallen through until I saw shoptroll's post on the main thread this afternoon.

Oops...I guess I'll have to get in on the next one.

I am quite happy not to get a pass and start playing. If that is possible schedule wise

Crashed and burned!

I'm going to claim that it was totally due to crappy draws, and not at all that Cronox has a much better deck than me. Nope, definitely not that.

Lol

I did get some very fortunate draws in both games. I seemed to be getting my 2 level 3 cards each round which really makes a difference when playing with limited decks like these.

Yay, meanwhile, I was drawing all level 1s

Corrected minor error there :).

Very true

Maclintok and I got a game in (won), but I think I'll be away this weekend. We'll finish up next week, most likely.

I came back strong in the second frame but couldn't pull out the ultimate win tonight. That didn't stop me from dragging out the fight to the bitter end. Congrats to cyrax!

(and sorry for holding up the first round, scheduling challenges and all that)

Not a problem! You reported this a few minutes after the deadline so you two didn't hold things up at all On to Round 2!

Sparhawk vs. Cronox
LtWarhound vs. cyrax

As with the last round, first name sends the invite. Please try and have your matches resolved before 11:59:59 PM EST on 10/30.

GG

And lets not add any of the new cards.

Games of board control. First game I managed to get the advantage fairly early, and held it. Second game Cyrax seized the advantage right at the start and galloped away with it, I never had a chance. Third game was pretty grim, both sides dying as fast as they spawned, until I got control and quickly pushed through a win.

Yup, you slowly gained control while I never got the right, or great, hand from then on. GG

I don't think those will appear before the end of the tournament

Because it's lane-based, there's definitely a predisposition to making sure you can maintain control of the board. I think this is why Nekrium/Tempys is a really nasty combination.

Nekrium/Tempys tends toward quick wins, lacking endurance. Alloyin/Uterra tends toward longer games, doesn't get rolling until level 2, more toward level 3. Alloyin and Tempys or Nekrium tends to do well, since it can push for a quick win and has the endurance for the longer games. Tempys or Nekrium and Uterra is the oddball, doesn't seem to do as well.

And with the format here, Unheroic minus Savants, the game gets a bit more diverse. The deck I'm using doesn't work as well if I try to adapt it back to unlimited games. Oddly enough, the deck Cyrax was using does work well with unlimited access, I have a version with heroics and legendaries that is really effective. I suspect we'd see even more diversity if we played another tournament or two. Fun stuff.

Soooooo Cronox ran with the victory twice. Both games went up nicely somewhere halfway.
After that, Cronox started to tear down my defenses and there was no coming back from that
anymore. Nice games though

Sparhawk and I just finished out games. Game one went perfectly for me from start to finish and ended up being very one-sided.
He bounced back in game two and got his cull the weak really rolling to keep me very much in check. After a shaky mid-game my deck got control back and I won a much tighter match.

Oh, forgot to mention a certain lack of beer this time. Maybe that's why I also thought the first game was tighter than it was in reality maybe lol

Hey all,

I'm on vacation right now and don't have access to my Challonge account, but it looks like the final round is:

LtWarhound v. Cronox

Sorry for the delay in starting this round, I didn't realize how fast the previous round went.

And that wraps it, 2-0 for Cronox, burying me under an endless stream of level 3s. Good games.

Congrats Cronox!

Thanks everyone for participating. If anyone has suggestions on how to improve this for the next time I'd love to hear them. I think given the small number of people playing I'd like to try running a Round Robin style tournament next time and I have a couple ideas for restrictions if people want to continue with using those to balance out the card pools.

Congrats Cronox!

Here is maybe something. Would it be more fun if it was live?
It will be way harder to organize and you can wonder if anyone would watch it even.
Lots of work for not much gain maybe. But just watching the games later on
could be nice as well. Just throwing it out there.

If the next time we still have a small group. We could play against everyone.
A finale in the end for the two top players.

Thanks for the games LtWarhound. A bit of a re-cap on the whole tournament for me:

Firstly I was very surprised that I didn't see anybody else playing a green/white deck. I believe all three matches I played were against black/white decks. White, with it's card levelling and drawing abilities seemed required in this format, otherwise you would just get smashed late in the game. I had 3 technosmiths in my deck and they were probably my best cards, I played them every chance I go. Add in some energy serge (normally levelled past level 1 using the smiths) and I was nearly always drawing at least 2 level 3 cards by the 4th round.
Generals were also an excellent component from the white side of the deck.

The main reason I went with green for my second colour was the Lightbringer Cleric. This card got about as much play as the technosmiths. At every level he has good health and attack plus his healing goes from fairly minor early on to game changing in the later rounds. This ensured the games to stretched out that my level/draw advantage would come into play. I believe I finished 4 of my 6 games at over 100 health thanks to this card.

Overall I loved the tournament, particularly given we played with some slightly unusual restrictions which made creating and testing decks really good fun, rather than just looking up optimal decks for standard play. I would definitely suggest using restrictions again in the future.

I like the idea of recording games and making them available afterwards. I'm always interesting is seeing what other players are doing, given the cards they had available to them.

Somewhat in that vein I was thinking about going through and typing up my deck list with comments on each card. Would anybody be interested in that?

I would be interested in seeing this and I think it would be interesting to see the decklists even without commentary. I also like the idea of optionally recording matches next time.

Congrats, Cronox!

The tourney was fun if a bit short. Hopefully a bigger turn out next time. In the future I could easily record my matches. I scrubbed my deck right after I got knocked out but I can resurface it with we're all interested in sharing deck lists.

I already deleted my deck for this tournament. Needed the slot for other experimental decks. But the deck was based on Dryads and black creatures dying and respawning when they did. Worked out to be too slow and not big and mean enough

Sorry this took so long to put together. The deck I played in the last round was as follows. I played a nearly identical deck in the first two rounds but I made one or two tweeks between each round.

1 - Ageis Conscript
2 - Cavern Hydra
1 - Feral Instinct
3 - Forgeplate Sentry
1 - Grove Huntress
1 - Heavy Artillery
1 - Matrix Warden
2 - Metamind Adept
3 - Technosmith
3 - Alloyin General
1 - Cypien Augmentation
2 - Energy Surge
3 - Lightbringer Cleric
1 - Minition Drone
1 - Primal Surge
3 - Spring Dryad
1 - Tech Upgrade
