About Spacebase DF-9

In Spacebase DF-9, you’ll build a home among the stars for a motley population of humans and aliens as they go about their daily lives. Mine asteroids, discover derelicts, and deal with the tribulations of our distant future: meteor impacts! Explosive decompression! Unbearable loneliness!

Spacebase DF-9 is a simulation game in ongoing development at Double Fine Productions. The in-progress Alpha version is available right now on Steam Early Access.

Update:
DoubleFine will implement some few remaining features of the game, release some of the source code (the lua code, not the engine), and then cease development.

PC Gamer]Double Fine's Spacebase DF-9, the space-based base construction and management sim, will leave Steam's Early Access next month. Double Fine announced the release window alongside a a small list of planned features for the for the 1.0 update. A little too small, perhaps, as many were expecting the studio to develop more content for the game. That now won't happen, with the studio instead planning to release the source code to the community.

Already played it for about an hour and managed to put together a semi-functional base in between crashes. My crew quarters doesn't have beds, dressers or rugs. It has space beds, space dressers, and space rugs. Just as a matter of course.

This...is a thing?

Let me give you all of my monies!

Here's the steam link if anyone is interested: http://store.steampowered.com/app/24...

Looks very interesting, but 24.99 is a bit too rich for my blood. Wishlist'd!

Buy it from their website since they use the Humble Store (which also provides a Steam key). Reasons? Humble collects a smaller cut than Steam and I think you get a DRM-free version as well.

Oops, didn't realize it was available from their site as well (not sure why I'd think that). Get it from them!

Considering that it's $5 cheaper on Steam (at least for now) and that I backed both the Broken Age and Massive Chalice kickstarters, I have no qualm about buying this from Steam.

I've been in the mood for a good, new city-building/simulation game for quite a while (skipped SC5, hence why I said "good" ), so I'm very tempted to get this now rather than later, partially because it's Double Fine.

I'm not seeing any price disparity right now. $24.99 on Steam vs. $25 on their site. I think there might've been a mixup at launch? I swear the website was listing the lowest tier as $20 originally.

It's $19.99 on Steam right now if you actually go to the page. Oddly, it's listed as $24.99 on the main page.

Hoo boy it is ever an alpha though. The airlock situation is annoying, since it can assign someone to fix a broken airlock (i.e. in a hulk) that can't actually get to the broken airlock door...because the airlock is broken. My first game got screwed up because of that. But I have to say that for the bare framework of what they're planning, I'm more than happy to throw $20 at them just for the chance to tinker around with it. I'm very hopeful that once they flesh it out, it'll be a ridiculous amount of fun.

Weird. I'm at work and it's showing $24.99 for anyone not logged in and viewing through a web browser. I wonder if there's a hidden loyalty discount for people who already own the prototype?

Well, I just bought it for $19.99 without prior involvement, so I'd guess not. Your're correct that the list price is $24.99 via the web-browser, but it's currently on a 20% discount via the Steam app Early Access page. Odd that there'd be such a pricing discrepancy.

I love me some DF, Wishlisting and going to keep an eye on how this develops.

True words. There's UI for building reactors to generate power, but it doesn't look like you're currently allowed to build them, or that they would do anything if you could. While outside the spacebase, crew members can fly under the base but it's currently just indicated by a purple tint. There's occasionally notices about events happening in the area nearby my spacebase, but there isn't currently anything there for me to investigate. And that's not to mention all the random crashes. (thankfully autosave exists already)

Must be fixed, I can't dig up the $19.99 deal even from the Early Access page.

Using the browser, which is what I used to buy it, I see it as $20 while logged in, but $25 while logged out. So I agree that it seems there's some kind of loyalty discount happening. If that's the case, you'd think they would make a point to mention that.

Unexpected. But that's Double Fine.

It's more likely just a caching issue within their web stack. After doing some reading, it seems like you get the discount through steam if you already own another doublefine game on your steam account. (though, brutal legend may not trigger the discount?)

I have both Psychonauts and Costume Quest and it shows up as $25 for me, so it must be some specific game triggering the discount.

Weird, it shows as -20%, $19.99 for me. I own Psychonauts and Brutal Legend.

I put about an hour into the prototype (mostly because: Chris Remo), which was interesting but didn't have enough meat to it to really keep me interested past that point. I never guessed they'd be turning this into a full game, it looks good.

Now that I'm home, I'm seeing the discount as well. I think the only Double Fine game I don't have in my library is Iron Brigade, and I bought the Amnesia Fortnight bundle when it happened.

If this turns out anything like Startopia I'd be a happy space cadet.

That's what I was hoping as well, but after watching the videos, it feels more like Space Colony than Startopia.

Calling this an alpha is really pushing it. It's more of a demonstration of the game engine than anything. There are a few working parts, but they're all kind of dangling loose. I'll be interested to see what they do in updates, but I'm not sure there's even any value in reporting bugs at this point.

Sounds like the very definition of an alpha to me.

Dunno about that, to me aplha means mostly feature complete but untested.

I haven't played this latest build, I only checked out the prototype, but the whole concept of an alpha seems like a tricky thing to nail down with games these days. What counts as a feature for the purposes of feature complete? By a strict enough definition, Minecraft would still be considered to be pre-alpha. I guess if core game mechanics still aren't in place, fair enough, but there seems to be a fine line between features and content that makes the whole life cycle thing a bit weird.

Totally agree, as a developer myself (web, not game, sadly), the labels we put on projects at whatever stage are generally completely arbitrary.
