NFL 2013: Week 6

Week 5 thoughts:

* Looking at Matt Schaub's contract, I think it's a better than even money bet that he is not a Texan come 2014. Schaub's salary, currently at $7.25 million, escalates to $10 mil, $12.5 mil, and $14.5 mil over the next three seasons, with an additional $1 mil in game bonuses on top of that, starting in 2014. His remaining cap hit for his signing bonus amounts to $10.5 mil, currently scheduled to prorate at $3.5 mil over each of the next 3 years. If they release Schaub in the offseason, they would either take the full $10.5 mil up front, or do $3.5 in 2014's cap and $7 in 2015 by releasing him after June 1st. That's not insignificant money, but given the size of his salary + game bonus figure, I expect the Texans to seriously consider biting that bullet.

* Despite what Gus Bradley says, I think it's likely that Blaine Gabbert has thrown his last pass as a Jaguar. For all his failings as a player, his biggest failing has been an inability to stay on the field. Literally every time he has flashed ability, he has immediately followed it with an injury that sidelined him for multiple weeks, preventing any sort of sustained development. We're only 6 weeks into the season and he's already been sidelined twice with injuries, and ones completely unrelated to previous injuries at that. He makes Leftwich look indestructible by comparison.

* As bad as the Jags are, they are just one of four winless teams. They do not have the first pick of the draft wrapped up by any means. It would be classic Jacksonville to blow this, much like 2011, where they won 2 of their last 4 under an interim coach, with one of those wins against Indianapolis, helping to push Indy down to get Andrew Luck while pushing the Jags out of QB selecting territory. (If not for those 2 wins, they would have tied Indianapolis in the standings and qualified for either the 2nd or 3rd pick, allowing themselves to either take one of Luck or RG3 outright, or put them close enough to be the team to trade with the Rams for the other top two pick).

* Some small comfort for us Jag fans: at least they would still destroy the Crimson Tide. Unfortunately, in the same article, we learn that the 2013 Jaguars are below the level of the 1995 expansion Jaguars. There's rebuilding, and then there's just letting all the talent on the team leave town.

* Frank Gore had a slow start to the season, but boy has he turned it on. I think the team's pick of Marcus Lattimore was genius, as Gore has more than enough gas in the tank to let the team bring Lattimore around slowly. That pick will likely pay off far more than it cost.

* The best QB in the state of New York right now is... Geno Smith?

* Speaking of the Jets, they brought back David Garrard. He'll be their inactive #3 QB, but great for Dave to get back inside an NFL locker room.

* And speaking of unlikely high performing QBs... Terrelle Pryor? Of course, let's not get carried away with what he did against a poor Chargers secondary, but I would not have expected him capable of that against any NFL secondary. It was enough for the team to cut ties with Matt Flynn completely.

* Josh Freeman lands in Minnesota, and it's almost a guarantee that we see him start games this year. We know this by the $2 mil the Vikings will pay him for the last 3/4 of the season, which makes him paid as much as Ponder and Cassel put together. Make no mistake, the Vikes are auditioning Freeman for the long-term role.

* What a disaster the season has been for Atlanta. A 1-4 start and now Julio Jones out for the year. Not what Tony Gonzalez came back for.

* 3 felony charges for Aldon Smith. What a promising career on the brink of total derailment.

* I think I'm going to buy a brick for the 49ers stadium. What should I have put on it?

Pick 'Ems

Raiders @ Chiefs: For a team that was 2-14 last year, the Chiefs don't look so bad. And for a team in the middle of the biggest salary cap purge in recent memory, with over $50 mil in dead money, the Raiders don't look quite so awful either. Terrelle Pryor had a bit of a coming-out party in the wee hours of Sunday night against the Chargers, while the Chiefs have paired steady offense with absolutely stifling defense.

Steelers @ Jets: Murmurs about Ben Roethlisberger's long term viability in Pittsburgh have already begun. The Steelers are in must-win mode, to stave off a full-on season collapse. Geno Smith looked like a disaster after four weeks, only to put on an aerial show in week 5 in front of a Monday Night audience. Despite their struggles, the Jets sit at 3-2 and fully in the AFC East race.

Saints @ Patriots: Only the Broncos have a higher points for/against differential than the Saints, whose rebuilt defense has been firing on all cylinders since the start of the season. The Patriots have been slightly stingier than the Saints on defense, enough to earn a 4-1 record so far, but they have not been nearly as prolific on offense. But throwing a wildcard into the mix is the fact that GRONK looks set to make his return this week. Will it be enough to keep up with the Saints?

Redskins @ Cowboys: The early bye week couldn't have come at a better time for the Skins and RG3. He claims to be entering this week healthy and rejuvenated. Likewise, Alfred Morris needed the week off to rest his bruised ribs, and he claims the injury is now "nothing serious". The Shanahan offense hasn't been on track yet this year, and they hope better health for 2 of their most key components will change that. They'll need it, as Romo and the Cowboys went toe-to-toe with the Manning Express last week, and for about 58 minutes, they were up to the challenge.

Jaguars @ Broncos: Who has the balls to make the upset pick?

My name is not Obble!!!!

lmao, its funny though. I guess its not Cobble either....

here is truth though, I historically am terrible at pickems. Every year I am at best middle of the pack, usually much much lower.

Oops, guess I missed a character when doing the copy and paste.

But now, I'm just going to leave it there.

Saints-Pats should be interesting as heck, mostly because it features two guys who should get a ton of votes for MVP.

Yeah, I know, Manning the Elder has thrown for 80 TDs and negative 12 INTs already this season, and he'll probably throw for more yards in 2013 than Dan Marino did in his whole career.

But the Saints are playing lights-out right now, and Brees' numbers are in the Manning ballpark.

And Brady? He has the Pats in first place despite a receiving corps that includes two guys with T-Rex arms, a man with no hands, a blind Girl Scout and Gino Cappelletti, who turns 80 next month. Just when I think folks should start writing him off he goes and does this.

Gaining ground on Vegas, but still behind on the year. Ugh.

Jaguars @ Broncos: Who has the balls to make the upset pick?

Chuck Norris and Clint Eastwood put together don't have the balls.

Man 1-4? I don't think I've ever gone 1-4 before.

Obble, I sure hope you're betting on these games because you're on fire right now.

Also, Thursday games continue to be stupid after week 1.

Thursday games are stupid unless it's Thanksgiving.

How 'bout that Eli Manning?

iaintgotnopants wrote:

those weren't Eli's fault. Receiver ran the wrong route both times.

Jacobs is running like its 2007-9!!

Wish I played him in FF...

Thursday games have Mayock, so they're great.

Where is the Giants D I used to love?

5-0? I knew I should have picked up a lotto ticket last week!

The 28 point spread on that Jaguars/Broncos game is crazy.

Henne brings the spread down to 26, lol....still...I dont think any of us are as ignorant as to truly think the Jags will beat the Broncos...they might stay closer than 26, but thats only because Denver will let off the gas in the 3rd quarter.

That was so disheartening but proud of Jacobs coming back big.

I decided after Week 4, that as a fun lark to add to my changing fitness routine, that I wouldn't have a alcoholic drink until the Giants won a game.

I may be sober until the season ends.

I never saw 0-6 coming..ugh.. Giants show hints of improvement every game but once momentum builds, they fall flat.

There's too many Mudderfudder's Obbling up our list!!

I love that somehow forgetting to put picks in for the week that some people went 0-5 technically gives me a tiebreaker against most of the league

I listened to that Bears game on the radio. This is getting pretty desperate for Manning and Coughlin. Not sure what's going to happen to either of them this season.

"F*ck Greg Schiano with an infected spike."

Raiders at Chiefs: At this point, I refuse to believe in the Raiders until they win at least ten games two years straight. Possibly three. Terrelle Pryor apparently looked good the other night at a game I didn't watch; when I've seen him, he's had a nice combination of decent play and plays where he takes off from the pocket too quickly. Not convinced. Alex Smith is the kind of QB who excels when he has a really good defense, and he does.

Steelers at Jets: Not entirely convinced Geno Smith is the answer at QB, but, if the question is "What defense looks really old and slow", the answer is "The Steelers".

Saints at Patriots: Tom Brady no longer looks like Tom Brady; it's easy to blame young WRs, but Brady is not throwing the ball as accurately as he used to.

Redskins at Cowboys: Tony Romo played phenomenally well last week. If you score 48 points, you get no blame. None.

Jaguars at Broncos

I took the Jags, but only because I hate the Broncos that much. It's like Cowboys-Skins; If Romo looks like he did last week, they've got it in the bag. But heaven help me if I ever take them as a pick.

Another staph infection in Tampa. Number three.

Jacksonville may be worse on the field, but I think when you consider the whole picture, from ticket sales to staff dysfunction to now Cleveland-like staph infection issues, Tampa Bay has to be the most hapless franchise in the NFL.

EDIT: I see on PFT that someone made an almost identical comment 20 minutes ago. Well, it's true.

Hey, now, all Tampa needs is to find a franchise QB, fire and find a coach, repair damaged relationships between the front office and players, address a looming cap problem with Revis' huge salary number, fill in depth at almost every position, and nuke the practice facility from outer space in order to finally sterilize it.

Other than that, we're golden.

From Deadspin:

"We've been calling the 2013 Buccaneers things like "garbage fire," "dysfunctional sh!tshow," and "sad mess" lately. Now we can add "roiling pit of disease" to the list."

Ouch.

In other Deadspin-related news, this week's Jambaroo points and laughs at Schiano. You might find it cathartic.

There are no words strong enough for the type of sub-human being that physically beats a 2-year-old child to death.

Patterson has a prior domestic abuse record with a different woman and child, having pleaded guilty to simple assault in an incident last year involving an adult female and juvenile male.

*sigh* ... people of the world, please do not let abusers in to your life, and absolutely do not let them anywhere near your children.

*Legion wrote:

I totally agree with this, BUT - the problem is that the person who is going to let an abuser in is probably immune to this advice.

The scariest part to me is, what could AP have done to keep the guy out? Nothing. The only thing I can imagine is that he would have to have lived with his child. To me, that's the application of this horrible, horrible tragedy.

A year or so ago I linked a study that showed that chances for damn near everything bad in the world happening increase dramatically when both parents aren't present, frequently because of the parent with custody inviting someone horrible into their lives.

/depressing derail

As an Eagles fan part of me refuses to believe the whole NY Giants fiasco...I keep thinking that during the next game Eli will suddenly wink at the camera and throw for 600 yards and 6TD's...Giants will win 10 straight sweep everyone on the road in the playoffs and beat Tom Brady again in another Super Bowl.

I rather like the article on the whole, except for a bunch of bullsh*t near the end:

Deadspin wrote:

That's why the hardass coach has such a strong place in the cultural firmament, no matter how ineffective these guys are in reality. Frankly, it's more embarrassing to lose with an idiot like Schiano or Mike Singletary in charge, because those guys both tried so laughably hard to look like they were in control of everything. Very soon, they won't have any control over any NFL team. They'll be banished down to youth ranks, where they can find younger and younger suckers to Lord over. I hope that, one day, they're gone for good.

Does this dude seriously believe this tripe? The author uses Bear Bryant as an example, but honestly, I have a hard time buying that he's anything like some of the "hard-ass coaches" that deserve the demonization they're currently getting(Schiano first among them IMO). Bear put a hell of a lot of wins up, but I highly doubt that it was through any sort of player mistreatment of the type Bob Knight was reported to do(THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE PLAYING LIKE). Rather, I'd wager that it was through demanding effort and respect from his players, and instilling a work ethic and more of that same respect. Not beating them down, not berating them, but by demanding nothing less than their best effort. In other words, the author completely misses the sometimes narrow gap between bad coaches who really are hardasses like Schiano, and coaches who demand, and often get, immense effort and production from their players, like Bear Bryant.
