SimCity 5 Disappointment-All

Has anyone played with SPAM which is the agricultural overhaul mod?

No. But I looked it up, and I recognized the creator's name. He's one of the top, if not the top, modders in the game. I probably used most of his work back in the day.

As for SC4 crash-to-desktop issue, your best bet is to disable all of your processor's cores but one. You'd think you'd want as many cores working as possible, especially when the city gets big, but SC4 was designed for a single-core processor.

Be warned Sim City 4 can be very "crash to desktop" friendly on certain systems. Not really sure what might cause it but all I know is mine seems to crash quite a lot, even more now that I added NAM.

NAM is very crash prone.

This was much funnier when I didn't read the next to next to last post and thought NAM was a typo for RAM.

Aw, dammit! That's what happened to me. I know nothing about the mod or its stability.

I didn't use NAM and don't remember getting any crashes. If we get enough anecdotes in here we'll be able to draw some real conclusions!

Looks like Maxis is considering supporting mods officially, if in a limited manner (ie. don't mod out the online connection).

Wow... This post is just... wow!

[The game's original design] was about intercity connectivity and the challenge of managing a region[...]
[...]we recognise that many players have expressed the desire to build up one big city rather than manage the interrelationship of multiple smaller cities.

Really? It's a surprise to you that people want to play simCITY(!!!!) because they want to build a city, not a countryside full of villages?

This is the expansion I guess:

That actually looks a LOT like this one game that I played in the 90s. I can't remember the name of it, of course, but if I remember correctly the premise was that you were a courier of some sort flying around a futuristic city.

Snap! I remember it! And you're right, it does look slightly like that. Now I want to know too.

SimCopter?

I wanted to say that, I wanted it so bad...

That was actually a fun game. I played a lot of it.

Close, but no copter. It was similar to G-Police but came slightly later, if memory serves.

Holy crap the expansion is $30. That's a shocking price for content these days. See: Paradox Interactive.

Was this at all unexpected given their track record with The Sims expansions?

They gotta make up for all the lost volume...

It was a lot like G-Police. I don't remember if it came before or after, but a look through the list of Windows-based video games released in the 90s didn't turn up anything. The closest I could find was Independence War and TradeWars. Some other great games in that list, but none of them were the one we're thinking of. Perhaps it was released in the 2000s?

This is kinda cool... SimCity in the classroom: http://mentalfloss.com/article/53544...

I don't think so. Maybe I will dig it up somewhere in my old room when I'm visiting my parents next time If you ever find out, message me, now I really want to know.

Interesting this is happening since they said it was impossible to do. This is too little, way too late for me, especially since the small city issues still haven't been addressed.

Madness! They said it was impossible to do.

Edit: Damn, too slow.

That's not possible. There are too many essential features of the new SimCity that need to be done on online servers.

Offline is coming.

Nice! It's great to see them make the impossible possible.

Now they just need to fix the city size limitation, which is also "impossible," and they'll get my moneys.

+1

Well they're halfway to winning me over.

Just take care of the city-size limits (like gore said) and I'll buy in.

Man, all you assholes are going to have egg on your face when they get their Nobel prizes for the phenomenal advances in physics that they made to replace the required network connection with all other players in this universe with a connection to all of the parallel you's in other universes to provide the "single player" experience we've all been asking for.

I... don't get that editorial at all. It seems like a pile-on / rehash of the earlier problems, conveniently timed to coincide with EA making a positive move that placed the game back in the news.

EA said they wanted to do this months ago, and it's not in the least bit surprising that they've done the thing they wanted to do.

No good deed goes unpunished, I guess. I'm just happy to see the game move closer to a thing I want to play.

The city size thing isn't as big a deal to me. I don't have enough time to manage the huge metropolis that I made in SC2000. I might try it out once it hits $5 on a Steam sale.

Origin only, no Steam. Fun, huh?

I'm going to try it out when it hits Steam too.

Your move EA.
