.357 MAGRUGER SP101 I have a GP100, great gun. Indestructible.
.380 ACPRUGER LCP Good carry gun. I have one as my secondary (can't hide the EDC) because it fits in my pocket.
9MMRUGER LC9 I am holding out for a LC45
.40 S & WRUGER SR40C Not bad, but get the M&P or XD/XDm
.380 ACPKAHR P380 Great gun, I have a Kahr 45 on my wish list as a new EDC

9MMH & K P2000 US PST I'll let Paleo chime in about HK, but get the compact.
.45 ACPH & K HK45 VI See above
.45 ACPRUGER JR1911 Get a Kimber for any compact 1911
.45 ACPSPRINGFIELD 1911A1 Great full-size 1911. You can't have too many 1911's.
9MMSPRINGFIELD EM Not a fan of non 45 1911, except 38 super.
.45 ACPKIMBER PRO CRIMSON CARRY II All of the Kimbers are great guns. You would pay $2500 + for a custom with these features.

.45 ACPSPRINGFIELD XDM 4.5 My EDC is a XD 45 4".
.45 ACPSPRINGFIELD XDS I really want one of these, but there are all getting recalled for slam fire issues. Ruger will fix them, but I will wait.
.380 ACPSIG SAUER P238 Sig's are have a great reputation and have rightfully earned it. I feel most of them are just a bit too big.

9MMSMITH & WESSON M & P 9
.22CALWALTHER P22

.22 LRRUGER SP101 If I did not have the opinion that all 22lr need a suppressor, I would have one of these.
.22 4RRUGER SR22 skip for below
.22 LRRUGER MKIII I have an old MK2 and a new MK3 22/45. I like the Mk2 best. They are still available on the used market.
.22 LRSMITH & WESSON S & W63 so good you listed it twice. Look at the SW M41. They are not cheap, but it is the best shooting 22 I own.
.38 + PSMITH & WESSON S & W642 I have the 442 as a secondary backup as well.
9MMRUGER SR9B I love Rugers, but am not a fan of this one. Not sure why, might be looks.

.45/ .410SMITH & WESSON S & W GOVENOR Other than novelty, stay away from these. They are huge. Use the 45lc, it hits harder.
9MMBERETTA P X 4 STORM 3.2
9MMBERETTA NANO
9MMBERETTA P X 4 STORM 4
9MMBERETTA 92FS Good gun, I am just prejudiced against it because it replaced the 1911.

Basically, get a good 1911, a good 357, a 9mm and a 22lr. Get a Springfield Range Officer, Ruger GP100, Xd or M&P 9mm and a Ruger Mk2 or Mk3 in 22lr. This will give you a good set of guns that are all fun to shoot and are reliable.

If you have any other questions, let me know. I didn't want to get make this any longer than I needed.

And avoid the HK unless you are the kind of person who cherishes drama filled relationships with crazy hot chicks.

Great gun. Horrible company.

Very nice. Thanks for the information fellas.

Got a bit of shooting in over the weekend. Went dove hunting for opening weekend and hit my friends range for some mid-day action between hunts. Bird hunting was a bust after we got rained on during the hunt Sunday evening and Monday morning both. Did get to shoot my AR 300bk and test some new subsonic loads with the Cyclone. They were quiet, but I am going to back off 1/2 grain to be sure. Shot quite a few through the MK2 and AR 22lr with my Spectre 2 and Sparrow. Much fun. Watched a friend do some load testing with his new Ruger Alaskan in 454 Casull. That is a beast.

If things go well, we will hunt again this Saturday, but no extra range time. I enjoy hunting as much as the range time, so all is good.

Not as bad as you think. I have shot the semiauto barrett and it is surprisingly forgiving. The bolty, otoh, is a car accident in a can.

Picked up the Browning A-Bolt in .270 that I won in a gun raffle yesterday.
Woooo, raffle.

Can't beat free.

Jerry Miculek is inhuman. It's insane how fast he is.

$20 raffle ticket + $15 ffl fees.
Now I just have to figure out the whole case, sling, scope, cleaning kit situations.
*EDIT*
Well apparently this being the medallion series of the rifle the barrel is already free floating.

Yay free(ish)

Had a chance to fire it yet?

You will be happy. A-bolts are very accurate guns and 270 is a great all-around caliber. Since you got it on the cheap, spend a bit on a good piece of glass and go shoot it. Get it on paper at 25 yards and then move back to 100. You should not have a problem shooting nice groups out to 300 yards without much effort.

The one .270 I shot was a bone stock Remington 700 with fairly budget Nikon optics on it and it was still like shooting a laser. The bullet just went right where you pointed.

I was super impressed at the time.

Bingo. It shoots flat and hits hard when hunting. it is a bit odd for a target gun, but you could do much worse. It burns a lot of powder compared to other calibers, so that makes it a little less desirable. It is also a long action cartridge. Short actions are preferred because they weigh less. If I am going to use a long action I will jump up to 300 win mag for target use. Bigger bullet handles wind much better and doesn't burn that much more powder than the 270.

Another bonus to 270 is you can buy ammo anywhere.

Still haven't cleaned it, bought optics or shot.
I've been busy dammit.

Yeah, he's been busy.

Thinking about either a Ruger or Sig gas piston AR. Thoughts?

It's been a long while since I read up on AR's but both should be equivalently solid, IIRC. I would probably focus on which one is easie to acquire spare parts for.

Has anyone ever restored a gun? I got a Winchester 1873 from 1884 that is just covered in rust. I'd like to restore it by removing the rust but keeping the patina. Thoughts?

I wish I could give some advice because I do love old Winchesters.

Get it appraised first.

This. Before doing anything else.

Edit: Watch an episode or two of "Antiques Roadshow" and you'll begin to cringe anytime you hear someone say they had something restored.

I agree with the appraisal, but removing rust is not necessarily restoring. You could give a good, yet careful, cleaning and make a world of difference. Understand that there is a good chance it will never safely shoot again even if you restore it.

I am on a huge Ruger kick these days so my answer is a bit obvious there. Both make great rifles. Do you have an AR now? If you do, look into one of the Adams Arms piston kits. I am looking at one for my 300bk so it will be a bit more flexible with subsonic loadings.

I'm not looking to shoot it, but I realize that if I don't remove the rust to protect it, it will further deteriorate in condition. I guess I shouldn't say restore, but preserve instead. I basically want to keep it as original as it is while protecting it.

Just not sure how to remove the rust and restore the patina.

Photos

Anything that will effectively remove the rust is likely going to destroy the patina. I am sure it can be done but it is beyond my ability. I have a friend that may know, let me holler at him and see what i can find out.

Talked to my friend and he said Rem Oil and 000 steel wool should remove all of the flaky stuff without cutting into the pits or removing any of the remaining blue.
