GWJ SolForge Tournament - #6 - Mono-Faction Mayhem - Done!

Pages

Now that Solforge has been out for a while, let's have a tournament Since having all the tournament discussion in a separate thread seemed to work well for Ascension, I thought we should do the same here.

Current Tournament: Mono-Faction Mayhem

Announcing: GWJ SolForge Tournament VI: Mono-Faction Mayhem!

Let's keep the momentum going... or at least get it back?

Again keeping things kinda simple:

* All Legendary cards are banned (ie. Unlegendary format).
* All decks must be one faction/color.

Since I feel kinda bad for how lopsided the Legendary tournament felt, I want to bring down the cost and power level a notch for this tournament. We also haven't run a mono-faction tournament yet, so I feel like it's time we gave that a shot.

Signups are now open here (Use the 05/2015 Tournament tab). I will close down signups on 5/08/2015 and we will start the tournament on 05/15/2015. This should give everyone ample time to craft any cards they want and to field test their decks.

Rules:

  • This will be a swiss tournament consisting of (# of Participants/2) rounds.
  • In the event we have less than 5 participants, this will become a round robin tournament.
  • Each matchup will be determined from a best of five games.
  • Participants should try to have their matchup completed within 2 weeks. Repeated failure to comply with this rule will result in players being blacklisted from the next tournament.
  • If all matchups are completed before the 2 week deadline, we will start the next round ahead of schedule.
  • Asynchronous games are allowed, but live games are the preferred manner of play. It is up to the opponents in each round to agree on how they wish to play their match.
  • Please do not change your deck between games with your current opponent.
  • See above for a list of deck construction restrictions.
  • See below for a list of specific banned cards
  • Signups are in the Solforge GDoc
  • The bracket will be administered via Challonge, please make sure you have an account there and list it when signing up
  • Tournament will start on 05/15/2015.
  • Top/first name in each pairing should send the invite/challenge for each round.
  • Each participating player will receive a Legendary card chosen at random from my personal pool of sharable cards.

Banned Cards:
All Legendaries

Past Tournaments:
GWJ Tournament #1
GWJ Tournament #2
GWJ Tournament #3
GWJ Tournament #4
GWJ Tournament #5

Thanks for kicking this off! Will join for sure.

The rules look fine, signed up, and I see no reason for you to not play, Shoptroll.

I'm in.

Now I just need to put some legal decks together.

In!

To the deck-cave!

Questions:
Do we stick with one deck through the whole tournament? And is tweaking allowed?
Or do we submit our decks and that is that?

What would people prefer? I haven't done an online CCG tournament in a while, and since it's casual I don't see an issue with deck tweaking. The only reason I see for deck submission is to verify people are using the proper decks, but even then we're still beholden to the honor system.

I'd prefer that decks remain static during the best-of-three for each bracket. So that if my deck exposes a critical flaw in yours, you don't then shut that flaw for the second round.

But I'd also prefer that decks can be tweaked between brackets. So basically, you can tweak your deck when you don't have a-priori knowledge of the deck it's going to be up against.

Tend to agree. I'd think we should just stick to one deck. And tweaking as you said Jonman.

Poor Savants, locked out of the party. Heh.

Signing up and look forward to the funsies.

I'm good with this. Tweaks between rounds of the tournament good, tweaks between matches with the same opponent bad.

Thanks for starting this, shoptroll. I've been looking for an excuse to play with others besides being frustrated with technical issues.

Suggested rule for the tourney - play all games in real-time. Every asynch game I've started has disappeared into the ether before it's been finished....

On an unrelated note, I'm in a pickle - I knocked together two decks and started playing them against one another using the Hard AI. I keep getting beaten regardless of which deck I'm using. Can't decide if I'm getting sucky draws on the 'better' deck, or if my strategy just sucks.

Invite me Jonman I got a tourney training deck that I won't use in the tournament.

I was going to leave it up to the players to determine if they wanted a clock or not. I know scheduling can be kind of a pain which is why I liked the 3 Day limit in bigred's Ascension tournaments. We don't really have that luxury here so as long as people don't hold up tournament progress I don't really care if they do it asynch.

I'd be happy to do it asynch, if asynch wasn't chronically broken. I've yet to be able to finish one without it vanishing, never to be seen again.

I'll be pretty flexible on scheduling real-time matches during the tourney. I'll help make things work... well, mainly during the evenings Pacific Time.

i'm also registered on Challonge. The name is still: Maclintok

Sparhawk for me

Hmmm, looks like there haven't been any new signups since the 2nd. And we only have 5 people total so far

Woo-hoo! 20% chance of winning!

Steam shows 19 folks on my friends list who own the game. Worth spamming people's steam accounts with invites?

Also, I'm pretty darned happy with the deck I've put together

Posted an announcement via Steam.
Noticed a small update, not sure if that is the cards or not. No news so far.

I doubt it was, if only because it'd be announced here..... Could have been the matchmaking patch? Not sure if that required a client patch, or it happens server-side.

Soooo tomorrow is the 15th... is it still a go? I am fine to play it, even if it is just 5 people.
Fun to see if my deck works and what others have come up with.

Yes we're still go for tomorrow. If this goes well we can try doing a second tournament with either double-elim. or round-robin if Challonge supports that so the tournament runs a little longer.

And me? lol
Also see nothing on Challonge yet.

And we're off!

Round 1:
Jonman v. Cronox
Maclintok v. cyrax

Keeping with the guideline from the Ascension tournament, the first name should send the invite to the second. I have no problem if people want to play asynchronously but be aware there's still some flakiness in the system. So live games are still the best experience. I'll go ahead and amend the rules up top with this suggestion.

Since we've only got 5 signups, I've added my name to the list. With only 6 people Challonge is giving myselfSparhawk and LtWarhound byes for this round.

You have until 11:59:59 PM EST on 10/22 to get your matches in. Best 2 out of 3 wins the round.

Good luck!

You weren't on the spreadsheet signup!

I'll add you in my place. I forgot to make a deck for this in time so I'll gladly give up my slot as originally planned.

EDIT: And invites should be going out now. I apparently misread the instructions on the bulk signup feature.

Weird, when I click the spreadsheet I get is the one with all GWJ players...didn't notice one for the tournament.
Thanks for including me. Wish you could still play though!
-edit-
noticed now the tabs on the bottom. Totally did not see those.
Added my name just for completion sakes.

It's on the second page of the sheet. There should be two tabs at the bottom of the window. Sorry I wasn't very clear.

I'm cool with sitting out. Like I said, I didn't make a deck in time I'll see if I can whip something together tonight or tomorrow and maybe I'll send out invites for some side games with everyone instead.

Just a heads up - I've contacted Cronox via Steam to try and schedule our match around my weekend trip.

I'm out of town without my laptop from Thursday midday until Monday evening. I'll endeavor to work with Cronox to get our match played as quick as possible, but we might miss that midnight 22nd due day by a day if our availabilities don't line up....
