Turn Out the Lights, The Pile is Over... For 2013

Pages

We've made it through another year. This will be the last thread for 2013. Stock up on games, buy new stuff, grab a PS4 or Xbox One and get cracking on those games. If history serves as any sort of indicator, I'll knock the pile down some, but what I'll pick up over the next 3 months will more than exceed what I've cleared.

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Pick's of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the spreadsheet I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

The Year End Pick of the Pile is

Darksiders

Is it worth $5? I'd say yes...

"A war has raged between the Kingdoms of Heaven and Hell since the dawn of creation with neither side gaining the advantage over the other. Drawn to the unchecked conflict, a mediator group, named "The Charred Council", arose and dedicated themselves to maintaining order and balance in order to preserve the very fabric of the universe. To this end, they created a brotherhood, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (War, Death, Strife and Fury), to intervene and enforce their laws among both forces where necessary. Amidst the conflict, the first humans emerged. The Council foresaw that humans, while weak, were also cunning and would be integral and contribute to the balance's stability not by their meager strength but by their intellect; thus, a third kingdom was named, the "Kingdom of Man". The Council brokered a truce between the Kingdoms of Heaven and Hell: the Seven Seals were created to be broken when the Kingdom of Man was ready for the Endwar where the Four Horsemen would ride into battle across Earth to punish the guilty, the pact would be forged anew, and the ultimate fate of the three Kingdoms decided." I'll go first. Black Ops 2 and Darkness II are first up. More to come as the months go by.

Please put me down for Final Fantasy VI (Multi) and Paper Mario (Multi). I'm going to give my Wii's virtual console a workout.

Okay, this time I mean it. I'm going to finally finish Jeanne D'Arc (PSP) along with Rayman Origins (multi).

Dead Island : Riptide (multi) is valid right? I forget when that first came out. I'm 50% way through (it's a good "listen to podcasts" game) so might as well go for finishing it.

Guh. Put me down for the following:

King's Quest 1 AGI (PC), Bastion (PC/multi), and New Super Luigi U (Wii U). At bare minimum I would like to clear this before end of the year. Hopefully I get to finish more than that but that seems like a stretch at this point.

Put me down for:

Dishonored
Gunpoint
Dust: An Elysian Tail

Skyward Sword will have to wait.

The initial death row inmates:
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (PC/multi) - 10 stages down, 5 to go.
Lufia & the Fortress of Doom (SNES) - high encounter rate and glacially slow movement outside of towns, but still fun.
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly (PS2) - this year, I WILL ....not scream like a little girl and quit an hour in.
The Walking Dead: Episode 2, 3, 4, 5, and 400 Days DLC (PC/multi)

Beyond these, who knows. I fired up Mafia II for the first time ever last night and was blown away by the immersive world during my first 30 minutes. Maybe I can finally beat the final boss of Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, now that I got the expansion for free. About a dozen half-finished RPG's becken with their siren calls, and for months I've been thinking of continuing my FPS spree with The Wheel of Time and Doom 3. I should get around to Super Mario World one day as well.

...this is the 6-month long pile thread, right?

Mario Kart 7 (3DS)

Since I just added to the pile with a new system, the least I can do is beat a game on it.

AUs_TBirD wrote:

3 months, but who's really counting?

Rogue Legacy (PC) - Onto the last area. Loving this game so far!
ICO (PS3/Multi) - PS+ freebie from last month. This one might get canned, but it seemed decently interesting enough to try out.
Dust: An Elysian Tail (PC/Mutli) - because I saw Foxua just declared it as well and I'm 25% in already.

And if I can get through those, anything on PS+ that hits or is already in my PS+ library before my sub expires in December will be given priority, like Mega Man 10.

I'm like 30% in I think -- I put it down a couple months ago and don't want to let it fall by the wayside. Come on, momentum...

Currently playing through SRIV, but as that doesn't qualify I'm going to start on ICO HD on the PS3 afterward.

August and September did not go exactly as planned. Hopefully I can catch up before the end of the year. On the menu:

 • Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (PC) (should be done in October)
 • Valkyria Chronicles (PS3) (should be done in November)
 • Final Fantasy Legend (GB) (should be done in November as well)
 • Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 (Multi) (should be done in December)

I might add some more, in case I finish these before December.

Also, to those playing ICO for the first time: I'm jealous.

Alright, this it is, the defining moment of the year. If I can't complete the following titles before midnight on December 31st, I am a pile depletion failure.

Black Knight Sword (multi)
Nostalgia (NDS)
Sly 2 (multi)
Epic Mickey 2 (multi)
Final Fantasy XIII (multi)
Fallout New Vegas (multi)
Charlie Murder (360) - might not yet be three months old but it will be by November or December, I'm sure!
Kingdoms of Amalur (multi)
Darksiders (multi)
Ratchet & Clank All 4 One (PS3)
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (NDS)
Lego Indiana Jones (multi)

Depending on how I do, there may be more to come.

I'm declaring Gone Home (PC), Super Meat Boy (Multi) and Reus (PC I think?) for now. Made substantial progress in all three, no particular endgame for the third, so I'm just rolling with it.

Will also aim for Gunpoint (PC) and Dishonored (Multi).

Technically Fatal Frame 2 should be Multi, as there's a (pretty good) Wii version, which I really need to get back to. Actually, this month's probably a good time to take another look at it but I'll not declare it just yet until I get clear of Dead Island. Got a couple of other horror backlog titles in mind as well...

Should be current. Fatal Frame 2 got moved to multi.

Game on!

Well, Gone Home was a lot shorter than I expected, so I can already cross that off the list (sorry, Hemi, for the extra work).
Gave the chapter three boss another try in Super Meat Boy, and good grief, but that level is impossible. If I have to put another 100 attempts on Brownie, SMB just might be in danger of being dropped...

Hoooookay, let's see...For the rest of the year, I'm looking at:

October (HORROR MONTH):
Resident Evil 4 (Multi)
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Mutli)
System Shock 2 (PC)
Psychonauts (Multi) - Not horror, but Minarchist threatened to kill me since I haven't finished it

November:
Far Cry 3 (Multi)
Darksiders (Multi)
The World Ends With You (Multi)

December:
Yakuza 3 (PS3)
Last Story (Wii)
Dishonored (Multi)

Eh, it's a pretty daunting list considering my current gaming time, but at least it gives me a few games to choose from each month

But....but Minarchist scares me!

I'm sending a copy of it to Minarchist. You two can play it together.

And maybe he'll die of fright so Cpt will be off the hook >:)

Don't worry, we're all failures here.

It's the reason we have piles in the first place

stevenmack wrote:

I had no idea! Although I did forget about the Xbox director's cut. I guess I got it confused with Fatal Frame III, which only came out on PS2. Sorry Hemi.

stevenmack wrote:

Not in the US.

Gunpoint is down. Loved it -- well written, too, with all of its intentional noir cliches. Tempted to return to it down the road and try other dialogue paths.

Being that it's a three-month thread, I'm going out with an aggressive bang! Here's what I'm finishing before the fat lady sings for 2013:

Dead Space 3 (PC)
Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh (PC)
Monaco (PC)
Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed (PC)
Avernum: Escape from the Pit (PC)
Demon's Souls (PS3)

Hopefully more will be added as I crush the pile under my muddy boot.

Oh wow, Phantasmagoria, that's an old one! FMV galore!!!

Ok, sticking a few halloween-relevant games on the list as well, for when I get through Dead Island : zombiegrind...

Fatal Frame 2 (Multi)
Cursed Mountain (Multi)*
House of the Dead : Overkill (Multi)
Cold Fear (Multi)
Cryostasis (PC)

and Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh (PC) since it was mentioned above.

Can't guarantee I'll get to any/all of them, but I'm still in the mood for horror after Hamnesia/Outlast.

Saw someone streaming it on Twitch last night and felt inspired

I'm also considering 7th Guest at some point. Any recommendations on that one?
