Unfortunately, Cartoonin, I'm not much a fan of the growly screamy with very few exceptions.

I get that. I have to be in a mood for that type of music myself.

It's wild listening to Alexis' cartoony speaking voice, then hearing her belt out a growl that is on par with some of her male razor blade gargling counterparts.

A lot of solos are. You probably just need to check out some different lead guitarists.

Since we know you like Power Metal, I assume you like Dragonforce, right?

Dragonforce is the epitome of guitar masturbation with accessories. My hatred for them is partially that "old man Withers" "get off my lawn" thing, though. Got their first album when they were a brand new band, was all "Oh hey, they got potential", and then I heard the second album and was like "They recorded the same damn song over and over again". Said the same thing for the third album, too.

I know power metal is hardly the most varied of genres, but Dragonforce is just ...egh. It's the wrong direction, with a focus on nothing but speed. That they're so popular in America while other more talented bands go unknown tends to get my goat.

That was fantastic. Thank you.

I agree that the solos are masturbatory, but I actually find them sonically interesting, and the fact that the sounds are explicitly influenced by video game music kicks my ass. I also love the positive, cheesy, often fantasy-based lyrics.

They were fabulous live, especially the part where their former singer made fun of my wife.

I don't know if this has been shared yet, but The Map of Metal. It includes samples from YouTube of various bands, and gets pretty damn specific.

I know all the bands in Symphonic Metal, but U.S. Power Metal held some treasures. I discovered Brocas Helm from Brutal Legend but haven't gotten any of their songs yet (when Brutal Legend came out they were impossible to find, wonder if that'll be different now). However, I was surprised Jag Panzer and Fates Warning were US bands. I figured they were European.

If that kicks your ass I have a band for you.

WHOA. Seriously awesome and useful site! I could lose hours and hours of my life there! Excellent link!

Yeah, MapOfMetal.com is an excellent site. Someone showed it to me about a year ago, and I went there almost everyday for quite a while. I still have it bookmarked.

Out today.

Also:

Man, they did a number on Inez's makeup. I'm still not sure that's him.

I stumbled onto this band a couple weeks ago after watching a drumming video featuring the band's drummer. These first two songs are from their EP a few years ago.

This one is from their upcoming new album, scheduled to release this summer. I hope this is an unfinished version of the song, as the mixing sounds off/weird.

Listen to the songs in better quality at their bandcamp page.

I suppose now is not the time to say that as a former guitarist, and, when I had chops, quite prone to the Malmsteen/Gilbert/Shrapnel Records sort of solo wankery...that I grok and like the Dragonforce?

I'm a big fan, although I haven't heard the latest album. They were great live on the Ultra Beatdown tour, too.

Little thread been sleepy! I finally got the new Revocation self-titled album this weekend. I'm kinda lukewarm on it so far. I've listened to it once, and then the first two tracks again this morning on the way to work. Seems like they are emphasizing more of their extreme elements, and less thrash, this time around. I need to complete a second listen to see if that goes for the entire album. Since that is not super thrilling to me, I assume it's an extra bad sign that this is a self-titled album.

The deluxe edition also has a cover of Metallica's "Dyer's Eve", the original version of which randomly shuffled out of my iPod earlier this weekend (which actually prompted this purchase). They perform it very, very well, but I don't really see any need to listen to it when the original is right there.

Anyone else heard this album yet?

New Ziltoid from Devin Townsend is starting on the 24th with a radio show on Team Rock Radio. http://www.teamrockradio.com/

No, but thanks for the heads up. I like Revocation a lot.. and Dyer's Eve is my favorite Metallica song EVAR.

Anyone into the new Amon Amarth or Children of Bodom? You can tell I've been sleeping on new music lately.

Tyr - Blood of Heroes. This song is way too catchy, I hum it all the time at work

Devin Townsend is pretty much "saving" metal for me these days. I'm very excited about Ziltoid 2, after having loved the first.

I remember hearing bands like Slayer and Metallica mention Diamond Head but never bothered listening to them until 2013. Holy sh*t this is 80's thrash crack for me:

There is even a dash punk to it. My god I can't believe I missed these guys all these years.

Kickass song, but I really prefer Metallica's tuning on their cover.

Then again, pretty much all covers done by Metallica have that extra edge that really make them crunchier.

Discovered a band named Battle Beast. Horrible lyrics and 80'sness abound. Still, I dig it.

It's weird seeing all these Finnish names pop up in the metal thread all the time

Paradise Lost has a new B-sides collection coming up to go with the tour. Contemplating seeing them in ten days in Helsinki. They've got Katatonia (playing the entirety of some album - I don't really know them) as tour buddies.

Didn't really care for the new Bodom... "Are you dead yet" is probably going to remain their high point for me.

Fixed that for you.

Kidding aside, I thought Blooddrunk was solid, but they've been hit or miss every other album for me. Haven't listened to Halo of Blood yet though.

Good.
Fix.

I know I already posted a few Drudkh songs but they have so many good ones
Takes a while to get going.

Anybody catch the video of the kids doing Tool's 46 and 2 on YouTube? My iPod isn't cooperating with this thread or I'd link it in here. It's really well done.
