Dark Souls II Catch-All

Playing in soul form in DeS caused you to be at half health. But it was generally worth it to avoid invasions. Risk/reward balanced.

Them taking out the health penalty in DkS was a design decision that I still don't quite understand. Only penalty was not being able to have coop help. Risk/reward not balanced, too easy.

Now they're going back on both decisions, making it not just a health penalty to die, but a recurring healthy penalty if you keep dying. And taking away the main benefit of being dead, as being able to avoid PvP. Risk/reward not balanced, way too hard.

Until they explain if there is some other benefit to soul form in DS2 or what other option there is to avoid PvP, there are going to be people not happy with the facts we have so far.

If you're playing solo the "reward" for playing online is seeing ghosts and messages left by other players. You may consider that enough of a benefit to have your game regularly interrupted, but many of us do not. All the same, losing those ghosts and messages takes away from the atmosphere of the game and I personally see no reason why one should have to accept PvP in order to see them. Opening oneself to PvP in order to summon help from another player is a completely different story and seems reasonable.

Invading and killing other players is undoubtedly "as intended", but in no way does that mean you can't be a griefer. If you're calculating your kills in such a way as to cause the maximum frustration and inconvenience to the other player then you're a griefer, plain and simple. A good example of this can be found in the videos online where people post themselves hiding around the corner after the twin archers in Anor Londo kicking the host off the ledge after they finally make it past that rather challenging segment.

Elycion, I get where you are coming from. I am no fan of getting invaded either. In fact I'm pretty bad at PvP in just about every game ever.

However I would suggest holding off on any definitive judgements until we find out if there are any limitations on the invasion process. I mentioned before that one of the problems with invasions in DkS was that there was essentially zero penalty for losing as an invader. You have to go back to a bloodstain but that's usually a short easy jaunt. There is a short cooldown period before a player can be invaded again, but nothing of the sort on the invader's side. If they can implement a greater factor of risk/reward for the invader and/or add longer cooldowns or protective actions on the invaded player's side, the threat of invasion, while present, might still be controllable.

I feel like we often only get partial information when dealing with Japanese studios. Some of that might be marketing style, or maybe some info gets lost in translation, or maybe they just feel pressure to release info before it's fully baked, but it seems like we frequently get definitive-sounding statements that end up being only partially accurate. Given how much I enjoyed the past two games I'm willing to expect I'll get the same rush from DkS II regardless of the finer points of the systems.

I've put around 60 hours into Dark Souls now... I normally stay dead to avoid invaders because they take play time away from me... I went through Anor Londo this weekend... I literally spent more than an hour dealing with invaders in that one area. It has taken me more than 2 months to get this many hours into the game... I don't want to waste time dealing with someone coming in... So far I have killed every invader except when I fell off a ledge, it is not rewarding or fun. It is time consuming and a pain in the ass. If I could mod it out I would. It takes 10 minutes or more sometimes to get these guys taken care of, finding where they are hiding and running in circles trying to hit each other.

If I had infinite time it wouldn't be a big deal, but my gaming time is precious and I don't want to wait on some random guy trying to kill me just to say he did it. If there was a big benefit for doing it, or an in game justification like the forest covenant or dark moon then I have more tolerance... but the random dude out for random trolling is just a waste of time.

If they're hiding, why bother trying to find them when you can head for the boss area? Just asking.

It was a lot of the hide in the titanite demon room and wait for me to go by so they can stab me in the back strategy. I'm a slow methodical kind of guy though and knew the boss was going to be hard especially since I wanted Ornstein last. I kept retrying the run because I wanted to go in without losing too many flasks. Got help eventually though and made it through with ease.

@Elycion

I understand entirely how frustrating invasions can be when they threaten one's hard won progress. However, I'm not persuaded by the argument that you appear to be advancing: that there are legitimate PvPers and then there are griefers. As far as I'm concerned all invasions are designed to cause "maximum frustration and inconvenience to other players".

Is kicking a player off a ledge an honourable PvP tactic? No... but it's a legitimate PvP tactic. I find it no more unfair/unreasonable than encountering an invader with better weapons than I have.

It feels a little like some GWJers want to have their cake and eat it too. They love Souls games... apart from some of those pesky things that make them, uniquely, Souls games.

I agree with imbiginJapan that we probably don't know enough about Dark Souls II yet. But - as I said before - I'm pleased that they're still evolving the formula, still innovating, still refining. I'm guessing that they using information they've gleaned from monitoring players' online interactions to tweak the PvP elements.

What they really need is a downside to invading, and/or the possibility of taking revenge on an invader.

I'd love for the game to keep a list of invaders who have killed you, and you could invade them anytime you like. Revenge is a dish best served cold!

Manta: You don't even have to mod invasions out. Just play in Undead form or disconnect from the Internet. Either of those is a lot less trouble than modding.

The issue was the boss run I was trying to do. I wanted help from at least Soltaire and therefore needed to be human. I'm not good enough to solo those guys.

EDIT: I am also for penalties for losing while invading, but on the other hand PvP builds won't have a big issue with players invading them for revenge.

Can't you summon Solaire while offline? So you could have been human but offline.

And that's why I would want to be able to invade at a later date - hit them when it's not expected, and inconvenient.

detroit20 wrote:

Yes, yes I do. I see absolutely no reason that I shouldn't be able to enjoy a single player experience that caters to my desires as much as is possible within the game engine. How I choose to play will affect nobody else, so there's no logical reason in the world for anyone to object to it.

If Dark Souls 2 comes out unable to provide me with a single player experience that doesn't include being invaded with no valid way to avoid it then I simply won't buy it. No butthurt, no drama, I just won't buy it.

Or it may be more accurate to say I won't buy it until someone releases the (inevitable) hack for the PC version that blocks the ports which would allow invaders to connect to your game.

Now that you've written this, maybe you can stop whining about people saying you aren't playing as the designers intended, because clearly you don't want to play as intended.

Invasions are designed to occur, that's it. To cause "maximum frustration and inconvenience to other players" is a human choice, nothing else. If one's goal is to cause maximum grief to other players, he is a griefer, simple as that. All arguments like "it's not me, it's the game designed like that" is just a silly attempt to justify his own questionable ways to have fun by causing grief.

There are plenty of invaders that wave and bow before attacking. There are plenty of PvPers that fight against other PvPers at certain lvl and in certain place. That's what people do when they enjoy PvP.

And there are people that gank newbs in Undead Burg.

So yes, there are legitimate PvPers and there are griefers.

Just play it on PC, where it's simple to press Alt-F4, boot the invader and get back to your game within seconds.

Now that you've written this, maybe you can stop whining about people saying you aren't playing as the designers intended, because clearly you don't want to play as intended.

"Play as intended" is a pretty silly argument. The game is being played as intended for maybe a month after it's released. After that, the game is played based on knowledge acquired from previous runs, wikis, youtube, forums, etc. And that includes knowledge about bugs, exploits, imbalances, item placement, hacks, etc.

Besides, you can't say "play as intended", when every single developer of online games mention how much they underestimated people's desire to play like asses and to find and use every possible opportunity for griefing.

Lots of things were designed to occur, but failed in practice. The actualization/lack there of the Gravelord covenant proves as much.

Simmer down folks, no need for name calling or getting holier than thou on how people want to play.

I for one will echo what others have said in this thread. I need more information, and won't be able to judge until release. I feel a bit of trepidation to the summoning limitations, but again, judgement reserved.

Remember the days when all we had to go by for an imported game were a few blurry scans of pages from Famitsu? Perhaps that was for the best :p

I don't care how anyone plays, just amused by several "stop saying I'm not playing as intended" posts, followed by an admission that one has no intention to play as intended. Pick one, and spam us with posts about that one only.

Fedaykin98 wrote:

Clearly you've never really paid attention to what I wrote, because I've been quite clear all along that my befuddlement comes from people only caring about "playing as intended" when it comes to PvP. Modify anything else you want and nobody gives a damn, but tread upon the Sacred PvP Experience and you instantly become a heretic.

Playing as intended is a foolish concept in my opinion anyways, which is what I've repeatedly said. If you're causing no harm to anyone else you should be able to play in whatever manner suits you. If someone ran around telling people "you're not sitting in that chair as the designer intended", "you're not wearing that hat as the designer intended", or "you're not throwing that baseball as the maker intended" they'd get told to eff-off and mind their own business. Somehow when it comes to PvP gameplay we have some bizarre contingent of Purity Police that seems to feel the need to dictate how others should play.

Also, "whining"? Seriously? I get that my opinions are bothering you, but enough with the personal insults already.

Little late to claim the high road. In fact, this thread was going along quite collegially until your post where you called several posters "incredibly arrogant" - some ("particularly thin skinned", no doubt) people would consider that a "personal insult".

This thread's recent tone started entirely with you. Never too late to turn over a new leaf, though!

I'm here to discuss and even debate topics, not to argue with people. So after this I will not quote you, or directly reply to anything you post.

It is my hope that if you are secure in the knowledge that there is no need to defend yourself from something I may say, that you'll be able to happily scroll past my posts without even reading them. That should provide a win-win situation for the both of us.

I need to decide if I should avoid every piece of media until the game releases or gobble up everything I can.

BNice wrote:

That's been my mantra.

It is hard to argue that playing offline isn't to some degree playing as intended, since the game allows it. It is surely as much 'playing as intended' as griefers/gankers are.

As I see it, griefers are people who pvp with the intend of annoying. Killing/winning over the other player isnt necessarily the purpose (which would normally be the purpose in PvP)
Ganker: The purpose is killing, but it is done with a character that is much stronger than the opponent.

Both are part of the game when it comes DeS/DS. Doesn't mean I have to think they should be part of the game (or any game really)
In DeS/DK you had good in-game options to prevent invasions. It now sounds like you will have such options in DS2 as well - just different options than in the earlier games. So probably no issues after all!

Well, yeah, you can play as you want. But it seems reasonable enough that others might think you are hurting the game experience by doing so.
Personally I think anyone who played perma-coop on PC harmed their own experience. Though they probably got another game experience instead by playing co-op.

I wanted to note that IMO saying "playing as intended" in regards to invasion mechanic is silly because it doesn't work as intended due to technical implementation.

What was intended: a player needs a help with some boss, he becomes human and summons 2 people. He gets invaded and the invader is faced with 1v3 fight. THAT'S why he has the entire fight skewed in invader's favor (no aggro, choice of place, time, gear and build, etc.) - because he is INTENDED to fight against 2-3 players.

What happens in reality: a player needs a help with some boss, he becomes human and tries to summon 2 people. But due to crappy implementation of peer-to-peer multiplayer, summons repeatedly fail, the player gets invaded and killed in 1v1 while still waiting for his summons to appear.

So the way invasions happen right now is not really the way developers intended them to happen.

And let's not even talk about cheaters and hackers, which, in my latest playthrough, amounted to probably 75% of all invasions I've had.

I am actually eager to check out anything that doesn't touch on the lore. I'd like that component to reveal itself through play. From a mechanics and style standpoint I'll take everything I can get. That's mainly because I usually spend ages just deciding on a character class in games like this, so I might as well get started now

Certainly a fair point, but the question in DkS2 remains - If we can get invaded while hollow, can we summon while hollow? Perhaps the hour of video above has some clue...

Take the moderator hat off please Fed.

I'm don't want to pollute this thread with any more unpleasantness, but I don't see any other way to do this. With things continuing to be tense I asked for a neutral opinion on my recent interactions in this thread, I got it, now I have to own it.

I didn't intend to offend or insult anyone in this thread, but clearly I did. Intentions are nice, but results matter. I should have chosen to simply offer a sincere apology, and instead I was defensive and offered explanations.

I'm sorry for my poorly chosen words, and the offense they gave. I truly don't believe that anyone is a bad person simply because their opinion of a game is different from my own, and I'm very sorry that I made it sound like I do.

In the future when I find myself looking for impactful phrasing I'll try harder to consider just what that impact may be.

I am also in media blackout mode already. I should probably take this thread off of my favorites list considering that I get too tempted to see where the discussion currently is. The information I have on the game is what has come from posts here. I have only seen a few of the early videos and I stopped watching if a boss style creature was on screen. I know what two bosses look like already because of videos and I'm a bit annoyed about it.

It's been so long since release that I forgot that this point hasn't been brought up in a really long time.

Fromsoft always wanted players to be able to summon others for help, and it really never worked as intended.

In an attempt to defuse things here and get everything back to the nice status quo we normally have at GWJ, here's some puppies!
