Go to the Darkside?

I have sworn away all MMORPG since forever. However with the increasing number of people that love WoW, should I fall to the darkside and suck it up, and buy it? What are the pros/cons?

There has got to be 8 zillion threads about this by now.

Pro: Do it

Con: Do it

DO IT!

I know, but I want to be held by the hand and baby stepped.

I will be the anti-Certis on this and say don''t do it. You''re a teacher. You''re an influence to children. If you give in to these urges how will that set an example to these kids?

Be different, play EQ2. EQ2 offers a better newbie experience if you have never played one of these games before. Plus, I like it more than WoW, and it will help my ego if you play.

Honestly, wait until next week at least... servers are unstable and you don''t want to start your addiction now <cries>

We might be able to better hook you up w/ items too.

Do it Taco. It''s just like Kingdom of Loathing only less funny and with better graphics.

Don''t give in...Play Joint Ops instead!

This isn''t entirely true. Some servers work perfectly, but if you are die-hard about playing with the GWJ crew, don''t even think of playing yet, that server is wicked bad.

The only reason I would consider playing is so I could play with the GWJ crew.

No taco! Not you!

We''re losing them all Mateo. All of them.

If you can go ahead and send 50 bucks to me I''ll help you buy the game and have my friends play it for you. You can come over and watch my friends lvl up your character.

We shall see what happens. The real reason I''ve never played an MMORPG is because there is a monthly fee. Even if the fee was $0.05 monthly I would probably not play it on principle. This is something I will have to ponder on. I give it a 38% chance I will try it.

Seriously? I was SO confused when I jumped into EQ2. With WoW, it felt like the first 10 levels were just an extended tutorial.

I absolutely have to disagree on EQ2 being a better newbie experience - having played both and enjoy them both for different reasons - WoW is hands down more friendly and I think the draw to WoW over EQ is that you can play very easily for 12hrs or 30 minutes and feel as if you have accomplished something... EQ2 still has some of the grind mentality and it is far easier to solo when necessary in WoW... Almost everything can be soloed except for the instanced dungeons (at least so far) and a decent pick up group is usually right there in the area if you need one...

You should do it, KT. WoW is my first MMORPG and I''m glad it''s the one I started with. Plus the game itself does a great job of hand-holding and pointing you down the right path in the starting levels. If you''re a gamer (and we know you are), you''ll immediately catch on with the way things work.

Pro''s: Joining other GWJ''ers online in WOW.
Con''s: Paying money to join other GWJ''ers in WOW.

Sorry, had to throw in my $0.02.

They''ll come back, right after the free period ends. Let''s see how long the honeymoon lasts when the monthly charges start!

You can shank other GWJ members for a one time payment of $30 for Joint Ops Escalation!

That''s right unlimited shanking for one low, easy payment of $30!

Ron Poppiel got''s nothin'' on me baby.

When load up EQ2 you go on a little quest that teaches you how to fight, shop, and open things. You then goto the newbi island that teaches you how to play your class and gets you a full set up equipment by the time you leave. Once you reach the city you are shown where to hunt and the zone. It is very easy to find your way around with the waypoint system and the in game map is very friendly.

Voice acting also helps new players find quests since NPC can say something you can hear to go and get you to talk to more of them.

What you are arguing about has less to do with newbie experience and casual play. It is easier to solo in WoW. I would argue that EQ2 offers a better grouping experience and will in the end offer better higher end content. The raid system in EQ2 will allow guilds, both large and small, to have fun. They are different games.

I still believe that if any other company but Blizzard released WoW people would be loving it less. Gamespot gave the game a 9.5, if Ubi Soft released the game it would score in the 8 range.

No way. I''ll grant you that the Gamespot review was not well-written, but I firmly believe it is in the right range. As was the EQ2 review, from my experience in the beta.

I don''t. I don''t think there has been a MMOG released that was worthy of such a high score. Blizzard releasing any game will garner at least a 9 based on hype and fanboism.

Greg Kasavin does not have a good trackrecord reviewing MMORPG, he gave Horizons a 6.5 after only playing one character to level 10. I''m not saying that 6.5 isn''t the right score (i think it is a little low, 7.5 would be better) but playing a character to level 10 in Horizons takes two hours.

He scored EQ2 low based on the fact that it doesn''t ""expand"" MMOG genre, well WoW doesn''t do that either. Read the WoW review and it sounds like something you would read on a WoW message board from a diehard fan.

Is there/will there be an open-beta, stress test or something for EQ2 or is it already released?

It is already out.

Okay I''ll try EQ3 then.

I''ll try EQ9 revenge of the midgets.

I hear it comes with a Holographic Midget ""Buddy"" in the box if you preorder now!

BASTARDS!!!

I really really want to join this darkside but I cant for several reasons.
1) I''m already at risk of just giving up on the politicaly f*cked up college system I have to go through.
2) I am into the Evil Genius/FPS mood at the moment.
3) I am a very very cheap bastard.
4) I haven''t even beaten the game I have (although I did beat Evil Genius last night!)
5) Time is so short as it is I know I am going to fail to study for my math and java classes.
6) I would be more addicted to WoW than Bob Saget sucking c*ck for coke.

I found the best way yet to avoid MMORPG''s after an EQ1 addiction of about a year and a half.

Sign up for a marathon. You''ll wake up every day at 4:30AM and be in bed by 8:30PM. It''s great! I''m saving a fortune in booze and games.

I''m free! Free at last! Cancelled EQ2 before the trial period expired.

Ok, does anyone else think there is some flaw in the idea of buying a game and then continually paying for it. Mind you, I can see one or the other. I mean, if I''m gonna fork over 15.00 a month (i''m just rounding here people) - I don''t want to have to pay to get to pay them some more, ya know? Yea yea yea, development, etc... but, still... I was reading something quoting the average pull they''ll be getting per month, all I have to say is, wow... and we still have to pay to buy the game, suck.
