Have some sympathy. He took one in the family jewels.

Boom. Rays 7, Yankees 2. 4 HRs. Going to be a good weekend I think.

Matt Harvey diagnosed with a partially torn UCL and shut down for the rest of the year, at least. That sucks

Yeah - pitchers will break your heart. It's amazing when one comes along who is both good and consistently healthy.

I have to imagine that he's headed for Tommy John surgery. Apparently, efforts to avoid surgery on partial tears like this don't have a great track record. He's young, he's strong, the Mets are still rebuilding—he should have surgery, recover 100%, and help the Mets make a playoff run in 2015.

In the meantime, this is just another punch to the gut for Mets fans. I had a friend of mine ask me a few months back, "Can't you just root for another team?"

It's amazing the Rays are still just 1 game back in the division after losing two starting pitchers for such a chunk of time. Cobb came back last week and Moore they are saying is coming back Sept 3.

Craig Carton of Boomer & Carton fame frequently has Yankee conversion ceremonies for Mets fans who have had enough suffering.

It must be a difficult procedure to extract and discard their souls.

"Mets fans for Yankees!"

Wow who are these Rays? 8 innings in a row with the leadoff hitter getting on base. 15 hits, 7 runs. Up 7-1 in the 9th. Looks like the losing streak should end.

Hope they've figured it out again.

Matt Moore made it through 5 tonight. Hopefully having him back in the rotation will get things back on track through Sept.

Thread title September. :p

And holy crap the wheels have come off the Rays... lost 4 straight, and 7 of the last 8. And getting blasted by the Angels 9-2 in the 6th right now.

Suddenly 5 back of Boston from being tied the other day, and after tonight's loss will be only a game or two up for the 2nd wildcard. Things are slipping.

Time to right the ship... but they have 6 more games on this west coast swing.

Thought the Rays might have found the magic again tonight. Moved Longoria back to 4th, had some solid defensive plays, made a nice rally to tie the game and go to extra innings... and then gave up a Grand Slam in the 10th to Boston.

Exciting games the last two nights.

For those not watching the Red Sox, Koji Uehara has retired 34 straight batters as the closer. That's a perfect game, plus two innings, mostly in high leverage situations. Fastball tops out at 89, and he throws almost nothing but strikes.

Last two nights of the 30 pitches he threw 25 of them were strikes. It's been amazing to watch.

AL Wild Card race is insane. 6 teams in serious contention.

Oh, and the Red Sox/Rays back office pissing contest continues.

In a bit of cheesy gamesmanship, the Rays did not play music on the public address system while the Red Sox took batting practice. The music started, literally, the second the Red Sox were finished.

Yeah, have to say I dislike the Red Sox but they are just a great offensive team this year. I have no idea how they turned it around over the offseason. Hopefully the Rays can play well enough to stay ahead in the Wildcard.

Yeah losing the last 2 has pretty much put the Rays out of the division. Their only hope was to sweep Boston in this 3-game series and get back in reach. Now it's wild card or bust. And it's looking tough to get the first wild card to have home field advantage right now.

Very frustrating after the insane July where everything was rolling. Rays finally seem healthy and things should be clicking again.

Still just awful with RISP and LoB numbers. Looking at ESPN's stats, we're 3rd in the AL in On Base %, yet way down at 9th in runs.

#1 in Batting Average Against, 3rd in ERA, and 2nd in shutouts. But just not enough run support.

Holding Boston, as hot as they are right now, to 2 runs the other night should have been good enough to win. But we got nothing.

Still a few weeks to find the groove again, maybe.

Well Tampa and Texas are all tied up for the AL Wild Card, with a 4 game series starting tonight. Go Rays!

The more is see how this plays out, the more I love the new wildcard format. Right now, the Cards and Pirates are tied for first, but both are reasonably assured of wildcard spots at the least.

The consequences of not winning the division make this race awesome. If they don't want their playoff fate decided by one game, win the division.

In addition, I like that it screws with the wildcard teams' pitching rotation and bullpen, providing another fair advantage to winning your division.

yeah...no. If you want to add another wild card team then a one game playoff seems like a waste. I would be fine with a 3 game playoff but any team can have one bad day.

Zero wildcard teams is best. The only reason we need one is to balance out three divisions.

I don't really care if one bad day eliminates a team that couldn't win its division. I don't see the extra wildcard as adding another team as much as it is devaluing the wildcard. The fact that St. Louis has to work tooth and nail to win the division instead of coasting into wildcard is a benefit. A team didn't fall into a one game wildcard playoff because of one bad day. It took an entire season to end up there.

Baseball has such a slight home field advantage, especially in a short seven game series, that this provides a much more appropriate advantage to teams that win their divisions.

And while one game is not going to be representative of which team is better, it also kicks off the playoff season with a game with game seven drama. Then we roll into the proper playoffs, and the only team that got "ripped off" by the one game playoff was a second place finisher.

I prefer placing greater importance on winning divisions in all sports. It's almost pointless in hockey and the NBA. And don't get me started on how meaningless it really is in college football and basketball. But the season is the bulk of what we watch, or at least what leagues want us to watch, so it ought to mean something for as long as possible.

Easy for someone to say when their team doesn't play in the AL East

+1.

Ugh. Rays laid an egg tonight.

Rangers win season series 4-3, which might be an issue in <2 weeks when this is all over. Back to tied with them right now, and Cleveland only 1/2 game back.

10 games left. Go Rays!

So this happened during the Tigers/Mariners game yesterday:

Ahh man, it's good too watch the Tigers enjoying themselves while playing the game. I think adding Hunter definitely loosened up the club a little bit more as I've seen the team laughing and smiling more this season than in previous seasons.

Rays won in 12 innings two nights ago with Texas. Now in the 14th with Baltimore tonight.

Make that 16 innings. Rays using their 10th pitcher of the game, apparently that's a franchise record for most in one game.

Left bases loaded in the 15th. This thing should be over. Hope they can still pull it out.

Tomorrow's (today's :D) game starts at 1pm. So we're <12 hours away already, not to mention all the post-game and pre-game stuff that goes on. I'd wager the loser is going to feel pretty darn tired tomorrow.

EDIT: Also longest game in Rays history when it hit 5:45 about 20 min ago.

18th inning starting now. It's like a whole free game.

MLB record for most pitchers used in a game at 21.

This is a hell of a game.

EDIT: Woohoo! Rays win in 18! 6 hours and 54 minutes.

I can't believe you watched all of that.
