Fall 2013 & Spring/Summer 2014 TV Catch-All

So is Sleepy Hollow bringing a strong creepy/horror vibe?

More of a moderate creepy/horror vibe, tinged with religious apocalypticism and snark. Like Supernatural's better seasons, though it's still got a ways to go before it establishes the necessary comfort levels with the characters to sustain a long run.

Brooklyn Nine Nine, OTOH, was simply horrible. It's a shame, I really like Andre Braugher.

Sorry Nevin, but you couldn't be more wrong. Brooklyn Nine Nine just watch it. Had me laughing out loud.

EDIT: Oh my god! Sleepy Hollow! Wow!

I deleted Brooklyn Nine Nine about 10 minutes in along with it's scheduled recordings. Not for me.

Yeah. I thought it was terrible. I finished the episode, but won't be watching any more.

You know what would be amazing? For Guillermo del Toro to take his Lovecraft aspirations to someone like HBO, maybe as a mini-series. Or if there's a way to do a TV show set in a Lovecraftian town that could somehow run for several seasons, even better, though I think Lovecraft wrote mostly shorter fiction with good reason.

Yeah, Sleepy Hollow is horror, but not hide your kids stuff like Walking Dead or AHS. Its more like Grimm with better characters.

ABC Developing AGENT CARTER Show

ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has yet to even premiere, and already it’s looking like another Marvel movie spinoff program is in the works. Deadline is reporting that the alphabet network is in talks to adapt the One Shot short film Agent Carter, which will be an extra on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray, into a television show.

Hayley Atwell's pretty awesome so... ok. At least as long as they get her to do it.

Brooklyn 99 had my roommate and I laughing constantly throughout the entire pilot. And Sleepy Hollow was way more entertaining than I expected.

I gave up on Hell on Wheels after finishing season 2, so it's nice to know there are shows coming out with surprisingly diverse casts that can entertain me.

And I don't know if anyone will be willing to give them a chance based on that alone, but it's been a long time since I saw multiple new shows where white male protagonists were outnumbered by well-developed female and/or people of color characters. Keep it coming.

This is one of many reasons Major Crimes, formerly The Closer, is actually great TV.

Hmm sounds like I need to check out the Sleepy Hollow Pilot. I was not expecting much.

I actually laughed a few times in Brooklyn 99. It was stupid fun.

Under the Dome should be put down. It is a disaster.

I think Dean Norris has set some sort of record for the disparity of quality of TV episodes starred in during a one week period. Ozymandias was one of the best episodes ever and Under the Dome has been a huge mess.

Wow. Kind of crazy to be doing two SHIELD shows, or are they changing Carter's story?

Dads = Teh suck
Brooklyn99 = Pretty funny stuff

Brooklyn 99 has some Parks & Rec writing pedigree I believe, so I'm hoping for good things -- haven't watched yet, but it's on the DVR.

It can sometimes be hard to tell with the first episode of a show, too -- usually a lot of exposition, etc.. But sounds like it's very hit or miss from everyone here.

I think it's going to depend on how much you like slapstick non-sequiter gags and running jokes. There's one scene with a character that's "lost his edge" and wants only desk duty, and when Samberg gets sent to the evidence room, he says something like, "Oh man, I'm jealous. You could NOT be farther from the action" in a dreamy voice. It's a small bit, but made me laugh out loud.

On the other hand, there's like zero exposition, except for a few brief flashbacks explaining each character's shtick. I don't think it's going to rely too much on developing a season-long story, minus maybe the standard will they/won't they romances.

I thought Sleepy Hollow was terrible and stopped watching it after about 20 minutes. I quite liked Brooklyn 99.

I managed to watch Sleepy Hollow last night. I liked it well enough. I think there were a few issues and eye-roll worthy stuff in the first episode, but there's a lot of potential there. Fortunately, I think the dumbed-down content will actually keep this show popular with the general public, so I can put up with it if it keeps the show on the air. The general premise is great!

Brooklyn 99 had a strong second half that saved it for me. I'll keep watching for a while with expectations that once it gets moving it will get more consistent.

Next up, Sleepy Hollow.

Also, I've been loving The Bridge this summer. It has been great every episode. Diane Kruger and Damion Birchir are amazing. There was a scene this week where I expected them to pull a "typical Hollywood" ending and they didnt. It was harrowing. And it was perfect for the story.

^^ this. i was so very disappointed with Dads, the jokes were meh, and i really just got bored with it. i was hoping for more seth green ;( but i did laugh a bunch at brooklyn99, i'll give it a few more weeks to see if i care enough to dvr it

There is so much wrong with Dads. Terrible writing, horrible timing. It's shot terribly, everything looks fake. It's a complete disaster.

So apparently AMC is doing a Breaking Bad marathon starting this Wednesday 9/25, showing every episode to lead up to the finale.

Time to clear out my DVR since I missed it the first time around. This is awesome.

Sleeping Hollow was actually pretty good! My wife and I liked it a lot although we wish Fox had Crane react more to futuristic stuff. Most of it didn't seem to faze his aside from the car window. Kind of nit picky.

Brooklyn Nine Nine gave me a few chuckles. I will stick with it for a bit to see how it develops. I remember not liking Parks and Rec at first and now it's one of my favorite shows.

My wife really didn't like Sleepy Hollow much. I thought it was OK and had some promise. But she likes Once Upon a Time and Grimm, where I go more for Supernatural.

Probably not new (I really don't know when it came out) but Netflix's Orange is the new Black is an outstanding show. Lots of deep, mature themes are explored. Plus, hot naked lesbians.

Regarding the earlier mention of an Agent Carter show... after watching the one shot on the Iron Man 3 Blu Ray, I want the Agent Carter show even more.

Saw some positive buzz regarding Blacklist starring James Spader. I didn't record it, as Castle and Hostages were on at the same time, and the Blacklist pilot has a second airing on Saturday night. I really don't have much hope for Hostages, but have not watched it yet. I expect that time slot will see Castle and Blacklist making the DVR cut.

To be honest, if Hostages turns out to be good, we may drop Castle. My wife is starting to lose interest. It's slipped pretty horribly over the last season, and last night was not much better.

SHIELD tonight!

That was quite fun. I look forward to more SHIELD. And Buffy cameos.

I was a bit disappointed with the production values of Shield. I will admit that I am used to shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones which have crazy production values for TV series, but Agents of Shield seemed like it was made by talented amateurs and not a bunch of pros with god knows what kind of budget. The last ABC series I watched was V and it had better effects and cg than this did. Slightly disappointed but I am interested in seeing where it goes and if they can improve as they go along.

With the exception of Coulson I am not really sure about the characters yet either. Definitely need more time to get to know them before making a decision though.
