Fall 2013 & Spring/Summer 2014 TV Catch-All

Yeah, Sunny still delivers. And, next to Archer, I think The League is my favorite show on television.

So, new shows I'm interested in:

Sleepy Hollow - Only because I was born there, I expect it to be terrible.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine - I am not optimistic about this. As much as I think Samberg is hilarious and I love Braugher, I just get this feeling it won't work.

The Blacklist - Spader has done some good work. This looks interesting.

SHIELD - Duh

The Millers - Only because of Will Arnett

Almost Human - Karl Urban, robots

Hostages - Could be good.

Ironside - I fear it could be a gimmick show. But I watch practically ever cop procedural on TV.

I feel like I'm missing a joke here.

Haha, whoops, mispaste I think.

Not exactly fall, but...

Yeah, I want to check that out.

Does it have a name, for those who can't YouTube at just this moment? Thanks!

True Detective from HBO. With Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, this looks good enough my wife might ask for us to get HBO.

Huh. I hadn't even heard of that before but it looks pretty great. Definitely interested.

Same here. Whats weird is that I only kind of recognized McConaughey, and didn't recognize Harrleson until late in the trailer. There is some interesting production work going on that kind of works.

Completely different story, but McConaughey reminds me of his role in Frailty.

An awesome and underrated movie.

Read that as "Ghost Mime". Worst ghost ever.

OK, that looks very good, although potentially very disturbing. No chance of my wife watching it, but I'll be interested to hear what y'all say.

Sleepy Hollow was pretty good, and I think it may have promise. It's too early to tell, but it is actually a fun variation on Supernatural. It's humor might not be as good, but it does walk that similar line between horror and camp. It's worth keeping the season pass for now.

I didn't get much camp or horror, but a semi-suspenseful drama. I do think it did what it aimed to well, establish a fiction and further purpose for the narrative, which could've easily been exposition diarrhea within 42min. I didn't get a good sense of what they can do beyond the supernatural, but I dig the crazy. I'll definitely watch more.

Camp might not be the right word, but they definitely poke fun at what they are doing. I think the show is going to be all supernatural all the time. They have set up two covens of witches, one evil and one good, and a battle against the coming apocalypse. They have a bunch of files describing mysterious crimes and legends of witchcraft throughout the history of Sleepy Hollow.

Now we get to see if they can actually tell a lot of good stories in this universe.

O.o

Anyone else watching Low Winter Sun? I've enjoyed the first 6 episodes but viewership has been pretty bad.

Oh, Under the Dome is terrible.

I've got it recorded, but haven't watched an episode yet.

We watched the first three, but have not kept up. Its good, and I like the writing and performances, but maybe a bit too dark and grim.

We're still watching, but there aren't likable main characters, so my wife has a hard time wanting to continue.

Under the Dome's finale did not disappoint. And by not disappoint, I mean it was over the top awful, and ended with an abruptness not seen since The Sopranos.

This is mostly for Clocky, as I think he, and anyone else who read the book but bailed on the show, will enjoy this breakdown of just how mindboggling awful the writers had to be to do this with a book that was already quite good. This is a recap done by Entertainment Weekly. How they got here from the book is impossible to explain.

The Monarch Butterflyhatched from the chrysalis. It was flying around the inside of the Mini-Dome. Every time it hit the side, a terrible blackness would spread. In turn, blackness spread across the Big Dome. “Maybe it’s some kind of warning!” said the kids. Sheriff Linda, unimpressed, touched the Mini-Dome and got blown across the room. Sheriff Linda is really just not a very good cop, let’s be honest.

The Mini-Dome disintegrated. When the four kids put their hands on it, it glowed pink and then suddenly just broke apart into a million little pieces. This is sad news, since the Mini-Dome was one of my favorite characters. (Cards on the table: I was totally ‘shipping the Mini-Dome and Barbie.) The butterfly was dead, but then Norrie touched it and it was still alive. Then happy music played and it flew around Barbie.

We know who the Monarch is. Because the butterfly flew around Barbie, Joe decided that Barbie must be the Monarch. But then an earthquake started, and it only stopped when Julia picked up the Egg. “She’s your Monarch,” said Barbie. The notion of a higher power choosing the community’s leader would probably be more meaningful if we had any sense of the Chester’s Mill community beyond the six main characters, or if the whole town didn’t seem to basically be running along just fine with propane reserves. Anyhow, Julia is the Monarch.

Big Jim was the last character on the show to hear the phrase ‘The pink stars are falling in lines.’” This struck a chord with him, since it was a mantra repeated by his artist wife. He showed Linda a painting of pink stars falling over a black egg. Linda decided that this meant Big Jim’s family was special. Big Jim decided this meant him and Junior were God’s Chosen Ones, basically. I want to give the show credit here and say that it’s setting up an interesting dichotomy for season two. Both factions in town believe that they have been “chosen,” which is cool. Of course, neither of them have any clue who chose them, or what they’ve been chosen for.

A zombie projection of Alice appeared to everyone and explained everything in the most oblique way possible. Specifically, she/it said: “Forgive us. We’re still learning to speak with you. We’ve taken on a familiar appearance to help bridge the divide.” She confirmed that she represented the being/beings who sent the Dome to Chester’s Mill. She also explained, “The Dome wasn’t sent to punish you. It was sent to protect you.” The being insisted that protecting the Egg was important.

Julia threw the Egg into the water, and that solved everything. Pink stars ascended away from the water to the top of the Dome. It was a great visual (props to Jack Bender, the guy who shot most of the great Lost episodes, for his work in this episode.) Then the pink stars caused the Dome to shine bright like a diamond. Big Jim ruined the moment by yelling at Junior to hang Barbie from the gallows, but Junior hesitated. The last shot of the season was from outside the Dome; it had turned completely white.

The best part was that the Alice/Being told them they would have to "earn the light" by protecting the egg. And like every good deity, she refused to tell them how or from what to protect it. I have no idea why throwing it in the lake was useful, as it seemed kind of the opposite of protecting it.

But to recap, in the book, there were no mini-domes, eggs, monarchs appointing leaders, holograms of dead people (or living) and while there were pink stars, it was not predicted by Rennie's dead wife, nor was it just a light show.

I don't know how they got here. You have to try so hard to veer so far away from decent source material to come up with something so convoluted. At this point, Lost felt more grounded and logical.

We finally watched Sleepy Hollow on the DVR last night. I was really surprised at how good it was and how well it delivered the creepy.

Brooklyn Nine Nine, OTOH, was simply horrible. It's a shame, I really like Andre Braugher.

This is actually a "summer" show that hasn't wrapped up yet, but I thought I should bring up Ray Donovan. I'm not sure if I'm the only person around watching this, but me and the wife *really* like it. Although, the fatally flawed male character troupe is pretty played up. But, I've liked this show from the first episode and Sunday's episode made my heart break. I think it's really worth checking out. Last episode of the season is this coming Sunday.

Can you twerk?

I just realized I removed Under the Dome from my record list about 3 weeks ago.... Can't say it was missed. Thanks for the recap Jayhawker... That confirms it's just plain dumb and getting dumber.

Sleepy Hollow was surprising. It got better as the story went on. Definitely worth watching more.

The League... Awesome sauce every time, all the time.

Sorry Nevin, but you couldn't be more wrong. Brooklyn Nine Nine just watch it. Had me laughing out loud.

EDIT: Oh my god! Sleepy Hollow! Wow!

I deleted Brooklyn Nine Nine about 10 minutes in along with it's scheduled recordings. Not for me.

Dads was miserable. Not funny and banally offensive.

Sleepy Hollow was big, dumb stupid fun - definitely going to keep watching

BNN got off to a slow start, but I felt most of their jokes hit, some especially hard. My only issue for the series is that I didn't get a good connection to most of the characters, but that's not exactly cake for a comedy in 30 minutes.

I felt Survivor got off to an anticlimactic start. There were great moments, mostly emotional, but beyond the loved ones' male alliance, there was practically no social gameplay. That's quite an odd edit. Still, a good start to a season I was very unsure of.
