Dark Souls II Catch-All

I mean, if they're just dropping codes on people, surely they're picking 5000 people who have platinumed the game, right?

That would surprise me. My guess would be that they'd want a good mix of beta testers, from hardcore players who have platinumed the game, to more casual players who may have amassed a decent amount of playtime and/or beaten the game at least once.

I think anyone expecting a full blown beta will be sorely disappointed. Judging by the wording and info this is just a way to get several thousand people on a server to see if it blows up. With that in mind it would probably be a decent marketing move to give codes just to players who platinumed DS1. That would actually leave me out as I put most of my hours into the PC version but it makes sense from a marketing and hype perspective.

Surely beta should be given to those who had the most Pendants total among all their characters.

I just complained about this in the DS1 thread but will do so here, because I know that every word and complaint I write here is read by the devs and attended to immediately.

So here goes:
With a few exceptions (the link to Anor Londo, the Abyss) Dark Souls is an open world where everything is connected. If I die my bloodstain remains wherever it was regardless of where I travel to. So why in the sam hill does my summon sign disappear if I leave an arbitrary area? I can understand why it disappears when I enter a boss fight but there is no good reason to remove it just because I walked through some random archway. It makes waiting around to be summoned much more tedious than it has to be as I have to be rooted to a tiny spot the whole time. For goodness sake let me put my sign down in the Undead Parish, then let me go to the Darkroot Garden to farm Green Blossoms for an hour. When I come back from the summon, drop the sign right back where it was. If I'm done with co-op let me cancel it remotely by using the summon stone again.

Please devs, I beg you.

I am so with you. I end up putting my sign down and then using my iPad while I wait.

Namco/Bandai seriously needs to hire me as a design consultant :p

Hopefully going back to centralized server might allow something like that. On Demon's Souls it made sense because you were in numbered levels.

Some news from TGS:
-Dying while hollow will incur gradual health penalties down to 50%.
-Can be invaded while hollow(!).
-Summoned phantoms will return home after a duration which is (?) affected by how many kills they get.

There's some more stuff here:

ENB also put up a video that covers mostly the same things, but in a little more detail.

Man, everything sounds so good!

If that goes live Dark Souls 2 will change from a day one purchase to "I'll buy it when a hack to play it purely offline is available."

If there's not some way for me to play the game without being subject to hordes of griefing asstards then I won't be playing it.

Holy hell, yeah, that's going to suck. Well, I still have Demon's Souls and Dark Souls to actually finish. That may not happen before March.

Well, you can always just disconnect your platform of choice from the interwebs manually if you're that concerned.

I'm still planning on going in mostly blind, but that's my new favorite .gif. I'm tempted to read up more about these nerfs for hollows and phantoms, but I want very much want this to be an immersion experience before in inevitably spend a whole work day reading through a wiki for the game.

Well I just hope with the invasion changes they make summoning proportionately easier.

If you cant prevent invasions that would be really bad.
Especially for anyone playing the game more than a few days after launch, when you will have endless hordes of people using every tool and/or exploit in the game for their pvp characters.

I'm sure they'll balance the game around it and you won't get invaded every five minutes. That'd be broken. I think they want you to not be able to escape the fear of being invaded rather than constantly having your progress impeded by other players.

Like someone said above... just play offline! easy-peacey!

But yeah, they should make summoning friends easier if they're taking this route.

From what I saw one of the covenants automatically summons an NPC ally when you get invaded.

Also, new trailer

I like the song in that trailer. Very PJ Harvey-esque. Certainly a more creative choice than the generic metal that 90% of game trailers use.

Assuming that's in engine the animation looks like a big leap forward.

Why does this game have to come out in 6 months?

So that it can come out on my birthday

Good enough reason. I can wait for the party.

I think the hardest part of this game is going to be waiting for the PC release...

According to Amazon it's the same day as the consoles.

That isn't the news I heard out of TGS, they said the PC was coming out a bit later to provide for the best experience.

I am so in for that CE.

EDIT: Hmm, Amazon only shows the CE for PS3 and 360. I hope the CE is available for PC too, or I'll be a sad panda.
