'Serenity' (The FireFly Movie) Delayed Until September 2005

I am very sad. From FireFlyFans.net

Joss Whedon wrote:

Are you guys starting to hear that fanfare? Those distant drums? Are you slapping on your side-arms, pulling on your long brownish-colored coats and thumbing your crisp new bills in anticipation of the cinematic event of the year? Well, it's official: on April 22nd you, the true the blue the loyal, can step right up with the rest of America and WAIT FIVE MORE MONTHS.

Heh. See, sometimes studios shuffle around release dates...

Okay. Don't panic. right now you're panicking. you're thinking, "how could they do this to me?" But what you SHOULD be thinking is: "How could they do this to JOSS?". Seriously. That pity is mine and I want it back.

So what happened? Well, nothing terribly original. April got crowded with a lot of titles aimed at a similar demographic, and the studio decided September was a clearer corridor for the film to make the kind of impact it should. This isn't about a lack of confidence in the film -- in fact, they told me this before they even saw it. And now they have seen it, and unless they're way better liars than I'm used to, they dug it. Actually, they dug it pretty large, which is a good sign since there's not a single finished effect in the film. There's no reworking the end, no reshoots, no "does it have to be in space?". It's just a marketing issue. Now you'll get to watch lots of trailers in the summer. And hopefully, by the time it comes out, other people, people who ain't us, will get a whiff of what we're up to, and come along too.

I love this movie. I HATE waiting to show it too you. I felt pretty much the way I imagine you're feeling right now when they told me. But these guys know what they're doing, and they're trying to protect their investment, not bury it. So I gotta be a grown-up. The release date is September 30th. Hopefully it won't change again.

Spread the word. Keep the faith. And gleam the damn cube already.

I know it'll be worth the wait, I'm just sad that us fans have to wait even longer for it.

Maybe it''s a good thing. Any finishing touches can be placed on whatever needs to be done. More refinement can be added, I guess. I''m sad too like you said Veloxi it will deffinately be well worth the wait.

Hey, September 30th. Let''s hope no one steals the movie and posts it online...

This will happen regardless, but I''ll see it multiple times in the theater anyway, non-matine showings, because I am a true fan.

Personally, I thought waiting until April was too long.

AIIEEE!!!!! Five more months!

Damn, I gotta get me some of that ""patience"".

Patience is a nice thing to have. I''ll probably take a few months off from it then spurge on FireFly again, like when I first got the DVD set.

Alright, I''ve had Firefly in the house for a few months now, and I have yet to pop it in (my mom bought it for herself.)
What I''ve seen of it seems really cheesy, like everything bad about Farscape, minus everything good about Farscape, but I''ll give it a chance. If it''s not good by the end of DVD number 1, HEADS WILL ROLL!

PS: I got 20 minutes of sleep last night, but I can''t go to bed now or I''ll wake up at 4am tomorrow and the whole week will be thrown off. Hopefully this will keep me awake until 10.

Yes, watch it when you''re sleepy and angry. That''ll make you love it!

I''m pretty glad about this move. I had feared Serenity would get lost in the Star Wars hype launch.

Wow, I''m really enjoying it. A lot.
If I were WEAK, I would go back upstairs and watch the second DVD. But I need sleep, and I am STRONG.

LIKE A ROCK.

Oh, who am I kidding?
*says something unintelligible in Chinese*

See? It''s some of the best TV Fox ever cancelled. Farging Bastages...

I''m pretty glad about this move. I had feared Serenity would get lost in the Star Wars hype launch.

That is a GREAT point, actually.

""Guh, another space movie? Stupid people trying to cash in on Star Wars.""

I don''t really care about waiting. I just want the movie to do REALLY well.

That is a very good point, one I hadn''t considered. I''d honestly forgotten that the latest SW movie was coming out this summer. I''m more excited about Batman and Serenity.

Hmmm, I just found out that this is made by the same guy as Buffy. I''m surprised they didn''t advertise that fact like mad (or maybe they did,) because I would have thought that that would be instant success. The hordes of rabid Buffy fans watch commercials, too!
Hopefully, if the movie profits/DVD sales ever ressurect this show, Whedon doesn''t add any of the stupid bullcrap that ruined Buffy after the first few seasons.

Well, since I didn''t even know the movie was supposed to be coming out so soon, that''s actually good news to me. Next september is sooner than I was expecting it!

Now let''s just hope the movie drums up enough interest to revive the series.

Ah, who am I kidding. Fox doesn''t give a crap.

Which is sad, I think Firefly was a better show than Farscape ever was, despite having a vaguely similar premise (people in spaceship wander around doing stuff).

Unfortunately, when Fox sold the movie rights to Universal they stipulated that they not turn it into a TV series for 5 years. I''m super happy there''s a movie coming out but would really prefer a return of the series instead.

I feel the same way. I''d love to see a Firefly TV series have the same longevity that Whedon''s other series had, because in all honesty I never really liked Buffy or Angel, but I soaked up Firefly, probably because of the sci-fi bent.

The fact that it was made by the same guy who made Buffy and Angel was a downside for me when I began seeing the commercials, but the minture I say Jain(SP?, I can''t remember) do the ""Whoooo!"" thing when they escape from the Reavers in the commercial I was hooked. I wonder if they will hype that Whedon made Buffy and Angel or if they will keep that low-key. For me it was a turn-off but is it for others?

Is that in Cantonese or Mandrin?

Hey guys, good news, I just read that some Firefly novelshave been announced. I hope the writitng is up to the quality of the TV shows.

I don''t understand what you''re talking about. <sticks fingers in ears> LALALALALALALALALA!

Jain(SP?, I can''t remember)

Jayne, actually. Great character. If you like the actor, he played a stint as a super-baddie towards the end of Angel (season 5, which comes out on DVD in Feburary, I believe). Good times.

It''s Mandarin. Bad mandarin, mind you, but mandarin nonetheless.

Thanks. I know all about James Baldwin. He was also in Independance Day and The Patriot. Whenever I see any of the Firefly guys in a movie or on TV I instantly yell out their name. It''s freaky how many movies Wash has been in same, with everyone else.

Edit: Double post

It''s freaky how many movies Wash has been in same.

Yeah... has that ""whittling a plane from a larger plane"" movie come out yet?

And who can forget Steve the Pirate?!

He was also the side-kick in ""A Knight''s Tale"". ""I''ll fell you!""

We should start working on a Serenity video game. Anyone know any investors?

I am diappointed about the delay - you guys got me hooked while I was in Iraq and I am looking forward to the movie. I had hoped that the series would get revived in addition to the movie...

Looks like you''re not the only memeber of the Miliary who''s a fan.;) I love this story.

Ugh, I called in sick to work today and just did a Firefly marathon. ""Well, here I am..."" was the ultimate way to end the series.

I will definitely be looking forward to the movie.

One thing you can say about Whedon is that he doesn''t get locked down into one mode of writing. While he is certainly tied to the Buffyverse (bleah, I hate saying that), don''t forget that he also was nominated for an oscar for his work on Toy Story, and also got his start writing for Roseanne''s early seasons. Yes, I know he also penned Alien 4, and that''s pretty unforgivable, but I tend to believe him when he says the studio took his script had it reworked by taking out all the stuff he really liked and put that on the screen.

He was also a super-baddie in late seasons of the X-Files.

Yeah, Joss is my hero. We don''t need to talk about Alien: Resurrection, though. I like to pretend that was sort of an Adaptation-style alter ego.

Also, don''t forget Astonishing X-Men, which he just started writing. Definitely turning out to be the best X-Men title out there.
