Google Android catch-all

Everything needs to be doable from the lock screen.

If everything is doable from the lock screen, what is it locking exactly?

I know. I only lock so it doesn't accidentally dial.

Hopefully this is correct location for this, but my Galaxie S3 (verizon) both email apps stopped sending notifications for new email last month, I have to manualy refresh them in order to receive mail to the phone. Any Idea how to fix this?

They're still set to notify you in their individual account settings within the apps?

crap, It seemed they they were turned off by themselfs, I guess when the apps got updated it reset everything.

Sanity check me here. I'm sitting at my desk planning how to get from A to B in my car. The default route Google Maps wants me to take involves making a left that is actually illegal, so I move the route around to a more legal one. Now I want to send that route to my phone to actually navigate me there. I can't figure out a way to do that with the new maps website/app. Using Chrome to Phone just opens maps with my current location. Emailing myself the link and opening it in the phone just opens maps in a browser window.

It seems dumb that there's no way to do this, and I feel like I'm missing how. Am I?

Not sure, but you can definitely reroute on the phone just like you do on PC.

Like, by dragging the route around to say "no, I want to go this way"? How do you do this magic? I can't seem to get it to happen.

Well, looking at it, it looks like it's only limited changes now. Only gray routes can be dragged to be the main route. I could have sworn I've done more, but that last big Map update that took away the Nav app changed a bunch of stuff.

Man.. I love my Nexus 4.

Once you deviate from the route while actually navigating it will update, so even though it's gonna show the illegal left, once you do what you need to do it should update very quickly.

Yeah, I just got mine.

It's awesome.

Anyone have a Samsung Galaxy S4 on Verizon and put Cyanogenmod on it? Work just gave me one and all the bloatware is bothering me.

Do we have a Chromebook thread? Been contemplating getting one but from reading the Verge reviews of the current generation I'm considering holding out for the next wave.

It's popped up in the netbook thread.

Anyone know of a good way to (quickly) figure out which app is resetting my screen timeout? Something's resetting it to hundreds of hours instead of the 2 minutes I set, and its killing the battery.

I've got the S4, and its the first Android phone I haven't felt compelled to mod. Almost all of the bloatware can be turned off, and the Samsung interface doesn't bother me the way Sense did.

This might be of interest to some of you: Verizon is refusing to sell SIM cards for the LTE Nexus 7:

http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/09...

In other news, I picked up a new Nexus 7 over the weekend (the 32GB non-LTE version), and it really is a great little tablet -- I can't say enough nice things about it.

So the S4 is showing a few aggravating peculiarities as I have it longer. The latest is that I can't sync my music using WinAmp anymore. The S4 won't see the SD card where the music lives. Or maybe this is the current Android OS that's doing this? In any case, is anyone using software to sync their music with a PC that plays nicely with their S4? I'd prefer not to use Kies or iTunes.

I just use Google Music for my personal stuff. Sync it all to the cloud, then download/stream as needed.

Not sure why you're not seeing stuff on the SD, though. Is it just music, or can you not see the SD at all? Have you looked at it with a file manager like Astro or ES File Explorer?

Windows can find the SD card. WinAmp can't. So I could use Windows to add and remove music; I'm just spoiled after using a synchronizing software and was looking for something equally easy. I've got 42GB of music; what's Google's cloud limit?

I think it's 2000 songs @ up to 300MB per file.

Googling, it looks like it's a maybe a Winamp functionality thing on SD cards in some cases, but others say it's possible. One thread I found, the poster said that somehow a ".nomedia" file had been placed in the music folder so that it didn't get indexed by the OS as a media file, so you might also check for that.

Can you see the music with other media apps? If not, check the sdcard and the music folder for a file that should be named 'nomedia'. It prevents apps from indexing/looking into those folders.

It's actually better than that -- 20,000 songs: https://support.google.com/googlepla...

I've been using Google Music for a while now, and while the initial upload is a hassle (do they have some way around that now, a la iTunes Match? I forget), it's pretty great having access to everything you own whenever you have an internet connection. I keep a bunch of albums pinned to my phone to save a little bandwidth, and so I've got something to listen to planes, but I let the rest just stream and cache.

So my Nexus 4 slipped out of my hand and got a dented corner on the cement, and I think it might be time to get a case. Any recommendations? Bonus points for looking classy.

Okay I'm done :), although I did see some nice leather ones as well. My phone scratched and beaten already, but that just adds character.

Have a spare silicone case and Google bumper sitting around - send me your address and I'll snail mail one your way.

Personally prefer the Nillkin matte/hard case myself - has a nice grippy back, comes in decent colours, and it's not bulky.

I've used Speck cases for my s4 and, previously, iPhone 4 - Candyshell, I think - and liked them pretty well. I drop my phone all the time.

I don't think Speck makes cases for the Nexus 4. My choice would either be the Ballistic SG or the Seidio Active. (If Trident made cases for the Nexus 4 I'd recommend them. My wife and I really like the Trident Aegis on our Galaxy S4s. Sadly they don't.)
